M.D.’s nutritional knowledge. A review.

Dr. Michael Greger brings us two informative videos today. For more, visit his great website at http://www.nutritionfacts.org

In our book, we addressed the dilemma of the physician in today’s society. In a world where up to 80% of our diseases are food-driven, we would expect that our doctors would be well-versed in helping us learn to eat the right foods for promoting health and avoiding disease.

But, through no fault of their own — after spending a small fortune on their education — they find themselves trapped in a system that provides no incentives for promoting health. They were trained to to treat symptoms of disease — not prevention or curing of disease. Today’s post features two short videos by Dr. Greger regarding the training of our nation’s medical doctors in nutritional science.

The above video reported that only 25% of our med schools teach ANY courses in nutrition. And personally, I would like to see what those courses are — and if they are truly designed to promote health; or if they’re just another “system-endorsed” recitation of the USDA dietary guidelines. My guess is the latter.

In whichever case, Dr. Greger employs the next short video to assess how well our M.D.’s are using what little nutritional knowledge they do have in the counseling of their patients.

It turns out that the discussion of food rarely takes more than a minute or so in most sessions with physicians; if in fact it is even mentioned at all. A 90-year-old friend of mine told me recently that no physician had ever counseled him a single time on the topic of nutrition or what he should be eating.

Now, for your week-end viewing pleasure, I have once again provided two very important movies. Just in case you haven’t seem them yet, just get yourself some popcorn, click on the links below, and watch these great world-changing documentaries with your family. Both of these films are about 1.5 hours and they will both leave you feeling differently about the role of the human race on our precious planet.

After watching the second movie, you may even have a different feeling about man's use of the horse.

HOME — a great 2009 film; a powerful eye-opener

“Earthlings” — A documentary that we all NEED to see

11-11-11; all “ones” — a great day for a new beginning…

The number “one” is always a good place to start. So why not make today — your day— to begin something great? It all begins with awareness and knowledge. For only when people everywhere know enough about the horrible consequences of what we’re feeding ourselves — are widespread changes likely to happen.

Want clarity about EXACTLY what you should be eating to achieve vibrant health, click on the logo above.

So, on this special Veterans Day, I have pulled together a couple of lists to help build that awareness and knowledge. And guess what? Each list of blog-posts has eleven items on it. The first is based on popularity while the second is aimed  at providing you with information that you need to know in as little time as possible. Our 4-Leaf Program tops both lists. First, the most popular…

List # 1 — The eleven most-viewed posts or pages after 276 consecutive daily blogs

  1. 4-Leaf Program Introductory Page
  2. Steve Jobs. Vegan? Early death from pancreatic cancer?
  3. “4-Leaf” eating…positive, simple, flexible and POWERFUL!
  4. Eating healthy in the A.M. — “Sailors Oatmeal” at mid-morning
  5. Meals 101 Page – A simple guide to creating healthy “4-Leaf ” meals
  6. Dr. Oz Show — focusing on plant-based, whole foods
  7. Sailors Super Lunch; single men can eat healthy too…
  8. Clarifying the ubiquitous “protein myth”
  9. “4-Leaf” eating, Part 2 — Analysis of current diet
  10. Oz takes “confusion over clarity” to a new level – TIME
  11. Oz hits a HOME RUN with Julieanna Hever…

Congratulations to Dr. Oz for appearing in the “popularity list” three times. As we know, he is the most famous doctor in America — but we must remember that he is now in the entertainment business. That means that what you learn on the show one day may be completely contrary to what you might learn on another day. But, in his defense, he does provide much-needed exposure for the plant-based movement from time to time — and for that we are grateful. Maybe one day he’ll even feature our 4-Leaf Program on his show.

My list was designed to take you down a simple path of learning, beginning with our own health. Of course, the “protein” question is addressed early as the evidence supporting plant-based eating gradually builds. Finally, my post #11 is somewhat of a crescendo of intensity as I attempt to help you experience your very own blinding flash of the obvious.

By eating the right food for our species, we'll be taking a giant step toward a return to living in harmony with Nature.

Finally, I mentioned two movies in the following list. If you haven’t seen HOME or Earthlings, maybe you could take time this weekend for a little relaxed viewing.

List #2 — My top eleven — for helping you grasp the “big picture”

  1. Healthy Diet. 4-Leaf Program Introductory Page
  2. Protein. Clarifying the ubiquitous “protein myth”
  3. Seafood? FISH…the natural diet for humans? A “big picture” view
  4. Weight? Effortless weight-loss — on the “4-Leaf” road to vibrant health
  5. Reverse disease? Got Type 2 Diabetes? “Get rid of it,” says Dr. Ornish
  6. Our “system.” Do insurance companies “really” want us to be healthy?
  7. Animals. COMPLICITY — Billions of animals suffering in factory farms
  8. Water. It’s all about the WATER…huge problem – simple solution
  9. Environment. “Running roughshod” over our planet at the 7 billion mark.
  10. The Children. Deadliest oxymoron on Earth — Healthy Kids Menu
  11. Big Picture. Blinding flash of the obvious; my 20-minute speech outline.

Now, I don’t know about you, but this morning at 11:11, I plan to have a delicious bowl of my Sailors Daily Oatmeal. And at 11:11 this evening, I shall be sound asleep, striving to get my necessary 8 hours of rest. Guess I could go to bed real early and shoot for eleven hours.

Blinding flash of the obvious; my 20-minute speech outline.

The food we eat —  and health, hope & harmony on planet Earth

Let’s begin with our own health — two examples

One. Not too long ago Dr. Oz had three women on his show to test what he called our “prehistoric diet.” Nothing but raw plants. The test was simple, they arranged for the women to live in a tent at zoo in New Jersey for 48 hours. Their results.

The solution is so beautiful, so simple and so wonderful for our planet and all of her millions of species of creatures.

  • Blood pressure: 128/91 was lowered to 115/72
  • Triglycerides: 138 down to 88
  • LDL cholesterol: down an average of 37 points
  • Weight: average loss was 4 pounds.
  • In just 48 hours. And these women were normal looking, not obese.

Impressive results indeed. But how long can you live in a zoo and eat nothing but raw plants? Not for long, agreed the three women. BUT, back at the studio in NY, they learned how they could make a greatly-improved plant-based way of eating — fun, delicious and easy. At the end of the 20- minute segment, he looked them all in the eye and asked them slowly and sincerely:

Do – you – think – that – you – could – stay – on – these – kind – of – foods – for – the – rest – of  – your – life?

The answer. A unanimous chorus of ABSOLUTELY along with big smiles and thumbs up all around. (Click for more on that show)

Two. The incredible power of plant-based nutrition to promote health — as proven by many prominent physicians, including Caldwell Esselstyn (Cleveland Clinic) and Dean Ornish (UCSF). Both influenced President Clinton to switch to mostly plant-based eating. Dr. Ornish said it best in his endorsement of our book:

Although heart disease and diabetes kill more people each year worldwide than all other diseases combined, these are completely preventable and even reversible for at least 95% of people today by changing our diet and lifestyle. This book shows you how. (Click to see all endorsements)

Just so you know, we’re not necessarily talking about a vegetarian or vegan diet. We’re talking about a diet-style featuring an abundance of whole, plant-based foods. We know that an “all or nothing” approach doesn’t fly for most people so we have incorporated some flexibility into our 4-Leaf Program of healthy eating.

Now, let’s talk about hope.

There are some pretty important things going on in this world that are greatly affected by what we choose to eat. Let’s talk about four of them briefly.

  1. Water. To produce one pound of potatoes requires 12 gallons of water. To produce one pound of beef requires 1,560 gallons of water. 75% of the world’s water is used for agriculture (mostly for growing feed for livestock, 20% for industry, and only 5% for domestic use. (Hope for abundant water for everyone)
  2. Land. To feed the average American requires about 3 acres of arable land. On that same amount of land, you could feed twenty people a health-promoting plant-based diet. And, by the way, there are only 1.1 acres of arable land per person in the world today — and it is dropping fast. (Hope for ending world hunger)
  3. Energy. It takes two calories of fossil fuel to produce one calorie of energy from soybeans. Sounds high right? Not compared to beef, where it takes fifty-four calories of fossil fuel for that single calorie of energy. (Hope for reducing our dependance on the finite supply of fossil fuel)
  4. Animal suffering. Not only is our practice of eating animals incredibly wasteful, but it is horribly cruel. The wealthiest 25 percent of the people in the world today are now growing sixty billion animals in horrid, almost unconscionable conditions — for our dinner tables. With a growing population and more people trying to eat our rich Western diet, the number of animals required could soon grow to 100 billion, then 200 billion — where does the madness end? (Hope for the end of this unnecessary animal suffering)

Just think about the huge implications for the above four categories. A move back to the natural, plant-based diet for our species isn’t going to solve all of our problems overnight, but it would be a pretty good start — by far the most powerful single move that we humans can make to promote our own health, lower the cost of health care, nurture our fragile environment, feed the world’s hungry, reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and end the widespread suffering of animals in the world’s factory farms. (Watch “Earthlings” if you’ve got the courage.)

Ultimately, we simply must return to harmony.

Life began on this planet 4 billion years ago and there have been many millions of species of creatures. But we humans are the only species in the history of the world that has not lived in harmony with Nature. In short, we have taken far more than we have given back — and it’s getting alarmingly worse all the time.

In just the last 50 years, humankind has inflicted more damage on the fragile harmony of nature than all previous generations of humans combined — for the past 200,000 years. (Watch HOME, the movie — it could change your life.)

What we have today is completely unsustainable; either we’ll take the initiative to get us back on the right track, or we’ll leave Mother Nature no other choice but to do it herself. The final paragraph in our book reads:

Ultimately, your decision is a simple matter of health, hope, and harmony. As each of us begins to take charge of his or her own health, we simultaneously plant the seeds of hope, accelerating the pace with which the human race can return to living in harmony with nature. Since we consider ourselves smarter than all the other creatures, we should be able to figure out how to make our world a better place. The time for that action is now.
