Nutritional excellence one week; yo-yo diet the next…

In the past ten days, I have featured the Dr. Oz Show twice: the first when his show featured Dr. Campbell, Dr. Esselstyn and others in a promotion segment for the upcoming movie Forks Over Knives, which opens today in NYC and Los Angeles. Next week, it will begin rolling out all over the country.

J. Morris Hicks introduces Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn at the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club

My second Dr. Oz post was following his shameless promotion of the latest fad (Atkins type) weight-loss diet — an unsustainable and dangerous diet that’s all about weight-loss with virtually no mention of the health consequences. Here is my key point:

How can the American public know what to eat when the story keeps changing every day? With Dr. Oz possibly being the most recognized (and respected) doctor in the United States, it seems that his fame should be coupled with a responsibility to tell the complete truth to the American public — even if it’s not always what they want to hear.

Dr. T. Colin Campbell and J. Morris Hicks review the manuscript of "Healthy Eating - Healthy World" after eating a "4-Leaf" meal next to the Cornell campus in December of 2010

Wouldn’t it be great if he followed the lead of the two great men that he featured on his show the previous week? With Dr. Campbell and Dr. Esselstyn, you will always get clarity and consistency. Their refreshingly simple story never changes — you can reverse heart disease, promote vibrant health, enjoy effortless & permanent weight-loss and so much more. All you need to do is maximize the percent of your calories from the natural foods for our species — whole plants. (See our 4-Leaf Program)

But the American public still believes that they “need” their animal protein and they can’t imagine giving up their burgers, steaks, cheese, and shrimp. And Dr. Oz promoting the Dukan Diet gives them the justification they need to continue believing that the plant-based diet-style endorsed by Campbell and Esselstyn is just too extreme. Besides, where would they get their protein? (See protein page if you’re still wondering.)

And, as I said in an earlier post, Dr. Oz is in the entertainment business and must keep his audience entertained — his sponsors demand it. But we’re talking about people’s lives here, we’re talking about an obesity epidemic, and we’re talking about a completely out-of-control cost of health care. What do you value most? The health of your children or being entertained?

For your convenience, scroll down for videos of the two Dr. Oz segments mentioned earlier. The first from 4-27-11 with Campbell and Esselstyn, the second promoting the Dukan Diet on 5-2-2011. You take a look at both — then tell me what you think.

If you make it all the way through the Dukan video, you will see that my friend Dr. Joel Fuhrman stuck to his guns and labeled the Dukan Diet for what it was, scoring it a “1” on a scale of 1 to 10. Dr. Furhman was the ONLY beacon of integrity on the entire segment.

The video of the Dr. Oz Show on the Dukan Diet is no longer available.

Counting calories, yo-yo diets, and beyond…

According to an article in today’s (5-5-11) USA Today, only about 9% of Americans report counting calories. Nanci Hellmich reported in the article that “Research shows that people who keep track of calories lose twice as much weight as those who don’t.”

J. Morris Hicks -- I never count calories, I don't even own a scale, I have a 32-inch waist, am 6 feet tall and have weighed a constant 155 pounds for the past 8 years -- down from a high of 180 before I learned the secret of simply eating the natural food for our species.

But what she didn’t report is that studies also show that dieting to lose weight fails in well over 90% of the cases. Oh sure, people lose a little weight while “dieting” but then put it right back on within a few months or a few years — in the vast majority of the cases.

Clearly the answer to weight-control is not counting calories or going on fad low carb diets like Atkins, South Beach and now Dukan — the simple answer is eating the right food for our species. If we are deriving the vast majority of our calories from whole plants (in nature’s package), it is nearly impossible to consume too many calories — unless you just eat the high fat plants foods like nuts, olives, and avocado. Here’s what the article had to say about calorie consumption levels in the USA (See link to complete article at the end of this post.)

Adult calorie requirements vary from about 1,400 to 1,600 a day for a small sedentary woman, 2,000 to 2,200 for a sedentary man, about 3,000 for a teenage boy going through a growth spurt and 4,000 or more calories a day for a highly trained endurance athlete, says Robyn Flipse, a registered dietitian in Bradley Beach, N.J., who has worked with thousands of people to help them lose weight.

We agree that most Americans are eating too many calories — simply because they’re eating the wrong food. We have found with clients on our simple and powerful 4-Leaf Program that when they load up on the whole grains, fruits, vegetables, greens and legumes — they don’t need to count calories, they just eat all they want — when they want.

And, if they have a lot of weight to lose, they quickly begin losing it effortlessly at the rate of 2 to 3 pounds a week. And after experiencing vibrant health for a year or so, over 90% of them would never even consider going back to their toxic western diet of the past.

The only calorie counting involved in the 4-Leaf Program is during the orientation process of learning what constitutes a 4-Leaf meal (deriving over 80% of its calories from whole plants). After a week or two of practice, they know exactly how to prepare a 4-Leaf meal and exactly how to turn a 1-Leaf meal into a 4-Leaf meal at any fine restaurant. Visit our 4-Leaf page to learn more.

Of course, most of our clients begin the 4-Leaf Program to promote “vibrant health” and they quickly begin to fall in love with the health benefits (beyond weight-loss) that result from simply eating the right food for our species.

Articles like this one today have zero beneficial effect in my opinion. Like the recent Dr. Oz review of the Dukan Diet, they just perpetuate the “yo-yo” dieting that millions of Americans are doing all the time. While millions are trying to force their bodies into ketosis (with Dukan) or depriving their bodies of enough nutrients with most of the so-called “weight-loss” diets — the obesity levels continue to rise.

Animals in the wild don’t get fat or obese. And they don’t count calories. They simply eat the right food for their species — and they don’t need a scientist or dietician to tell them what that is. We could learn a lot from the animal kingdom. They also live in “harmony” with nature and the rest of the planet — so should we.

Study: Few Americans accurately monitor calories (USA Today article)

Ask your doctor if our new “toxic drug” is right for you…

Two benefits and 14 warnings — should be a clue to trouble ahead

Early in my learning process about the impact of food on our health, I discovered a little factoid that I had never contemplated before  — in the first 58 years of my life.  ALL DRUGS are TOXIC. In his book Never be Sick Again, Raymond Francis explained that there was essentially only ONE disease and only TWO causes. The one disease is mal-funtioning cells (we have about 100 trillion of them)

  • First cause:  Our cells don’t get enough of what they need.
  • Second cause:  Our cells get too much of what they don’t need.

The "big picture guy" takes the helm of an America's Cup yacht off Newport, Rhode Island

He went on to explain the solution, most of which focused on consuming the right fuel for our species. And, although we should try to minimize our intake of toxins, if we’re eating an optimal diet, our body does a pretty good job of eliminating those that we do consume.

Although we get toxins from many things like “second hand smoke” and automobile fumes, it turns out the single biggest source of toxins in our bodies is the food that we eat. Yet, most people put more thought into the type of gasoline they put in their car than they do the fuel they put in their bodies.

After reading a manuscript of my book, Raymond has written an endorsement for our book:

“Poor nutrition is our leading cause of disease. Yet the biggest impediment to improving our health is that most people mistakenly believe they are eating a good diet. With the costs of disease out of control and threatening the economic health of our country, Healthy Eating – Healthy World is a timely contribution, explaining in clear, easy-to-read language why our standard diet is making us sick, and how you can make simple choices that will improve your health, longevity and quality of life. This is a must-read book. Highly recommended!”

—Raymond Francis, M.Sc., (M.I.T.) scientist

As covered in many of our blogs, there is overwhelming evidence suggesting that the natural, health-promoting, diet for our species is whole, un-refined, plant-based foods. And even though most of us have been urged to eat more fruits and vegetables for our entire lives, the typical American derives far less than 10% of their calories from these most nutritious foods of nature.

J. Morris Hicks, trying my best to help you and your family take charge of your health

Of course, the human body does the best it can with what you give it; but as our society tries to sell us more drugs as a cure for all of our food-driven maladies, our health care costs are spiraling out of control. It is our hope that the material on this site will help you learn to take charge of your health, reduce or eliminate your medications (all those toxic drugs), and enjoy effortless weight-loss as a fringe benefit.

Another bonus of moving toward the whole foods, plant-based diet is that you will be participating in the single most powerful move that humankind can take to restore the fragile harmony of our planet — before it’s too late.

We’ll take a look at those 100 trillion cells in your body in a future post about the amazing process of cell regeneration.
