“Discreet nudges” from a powerful leader…President Clinton

With the personal knowledge, the skills, the global stage and the organization to change the world

Since September of 2010 when Bill Clinton went public with his new diet-style to heal his heart disease, I have made very good use of  his powerful testimony. I managed to reference it three times in our book and have since devoted blogs to this great example that proves many things to the entire world:

He told Matt Lauer on TV that he actually likes the way he is now eating.

  • We can get all the protein we need without eating meat, dairy, eggs and fish.
  • We can lose weight effortlessly and permanently — even though weight-loss was not our primary objective.
  • Giving up meat is not a social disaster; Bill Clinton has never been more popular.
  • If the former “Mr. burgers, nuggets, and ribs” can give up those harmful foods and learn to love the healthy plant foods, then anyone can do it.

As for explaining why he is now eating this way, his simple explanation on the Today Show was a thing of beauty — a  discreet nudge from a great leader, “”I’d like to have as many good days as possible and this seems to be the best way to do it.” But for the man who asked him if “being a vegan sucks,” the incredulous looking Matt Lauer may soon find that he is the one who is simply not “with it” any longer.

The Candle Cafe in NYC, where my last visit with owners Joy and Benay included a very healthy lunch with Dr. T. Colin Campbell and his wife Karen

As a prominent force within the media-world, Matt may want to take a look at many of the world’s great leaders who have eschewed the harmful, wasteful and gross unsustainable Western diet. Maybe sharing a healthy dinner with Sanjay Gupta at the the Candle Cafe on 79th Street would be a good place to start. I’m sure that owners Joy and Benay would take real good care of them.

As for Mr. Clinton’s ability to provide that gentle nudge, a reader this morning provided the inspiration for this blog. When my alarm goes off at 5:15 a.m., the first thing that I do is check the latest messages on my iPhone next to my bed. And this was the first that I saw today — from a reader in the UK:

Hello Jim, Thank you so much for the piece with Clinton’s reply to Matt Lauer’s question. It prompted me to take a look at some live streaming of his Global Initiative.  He really does have pulling power to get together the world’s movers and shakers to discuss the most pressing issues. And there he is, acting as chairman, summarising, clarifying and “nudging” the discussion along to include all the participants;  he’s very good at this.

The plant-based diet was not on the agenda this year and he obviously does not want his own diet to become THE STORY if it displaces the other important subjects on his agenda, but on the other hand, his willingness to be explicit when journalists ask about his diet indicates that in this matter, he is also giving “discreet nudges” to move the argument along and to bring other participants into the discussion.

Great observation, and many thanks to this frequent reader who prefers to remain anonymous most of the time. Now, regarding those “discreet nudges” from Mr. Clinton, my perception at this point is that the ONLY reason he is eating plant-based is because he learned that it could save his life. If my perception is correct, then the message to the average person (like Matt Lauer) is that this “extreme” diet is for sick people, but not necessary for healthy young people like himself.

With a powerful organization already in place, who better than Bill Clinton to lead the world's most important global initiative...beginning with "discreet nudges," then gradually picking up the tempo.

Don’t get me wrong, I am thrilled to have Mr. Clinton’s testimony out there and all the discreet nudges that go along with it, but how much more explicit would those nudges become if he were totally aware of the many global consequences of billions of people eating the Western diet. Things that go well beyond our personal health — things like climate change, world hunger, fossil fuel consumption, land degradation, waste and pollution of water.

Clearly, the potential global impact of all of those issues is staggering — and I would argue that, collectively, they outweigh any of the other challenging issues that the world is facing today. In my mind, Mr. Clinton is the right person, at the right time, with the right organization to turn those discreet nudges into powerful global initiatives that would give the Matt Lauers of the world some real NEWS to report for a change.

Dr. Oz, apple juice, cantaloupe — food scares continue…

Here we go again, another round of contaminated plant-based foods

But, once again, the news media never mentions the underlying cause of most of these contaminations. The latest big news is all about arsenic in apple juice and listeria in cantaloupes. Just now, I did a search for what causes listeria and found this information on the Mayo Clinic website:

Most Americans probably now think that the cause of listeria is cantaloupe.

Listeria bacteria can be found in soil, water and animal feces. Humans typically are infected by consuming:

  • Raw vegetables that have been contaminated from the soil or from contaminated manure used as fertilizer
  • Infected meat
  • Unpasteurized milk or foods made with unpasteurized milk
  • Certain processed foods — such as soft cheeses, hot dogs and deli meats that have been contaminated after processing

Dead Chicken, a great source of arsenic and cholesterol. Yummy.

Well, how about that? Sounds to me like the real culprit here is our collective love affair with meat and dairy at every meal. Even those of us who consume none of those foods are placed at risk by those who do.

But when the news breaks, the average consumer is led to believe, by the incomplete reporting of our media, that the culprit is the plant-based foods themselves. The average unsuspecting consumer simply has no idea of the root cause of so many of our problems. Earlier this year, I devoted two blogs to this crucial topic

What they don’t ever tell you about E. coli infections

Eating animals — and the origin of disease in humans

Apple juice sales plummet while the "dead chicken" is still going strong.

The latest breaking news on contaminated plant foods was all about apple juice and was well covered on the Dr. Oz Show. As reported by Dr. Michael Greger in a recent VegSource article (see link below), he states:

Last week The Dr. Oz Show released independent lab reports finding as much as 36 ppb of arsenic in apple juice. USDA researchers, however, have estimated that chicken may harbor as much as 430 ppb. And since Americans consume three times more chicken than apple juice, chicken may represent 30 times the arsenic risk of apple juice. Based on FDA retesting of apple juice samples, though, compared to the amount of arsenic found in a Perdue chicken breast, for example, arsenic exposure from chicken may be only 15 times as great.

Take just over two minutes to watch this amazing video of Dr. Greger on this topic. Then, go to the end of this blog and share today’s post with all of your friends.

Matt Lauer to Bill Clinton, “Does being a vegan suck?”

Maybe that crude question will lead to a new world-changing, top priority for the Clinton Global Initiative

Yesterday former President Bill Clinton was interviewed by Matt Lauer on the Today Show — with most of the discussion devoted to talking about jobs, the financial crisis and politics. But as the interview was about to end, Matt said something about wanting to wrap things up on a lighter note — at which time he mentioned Clinton’s recent change in diet-style.

Matt Lauer quizzes President Clinton about being a "vegan" after a formal interview about the Clinton Global Initiative and getting the global economy back on track.

Matt said, “you’ve just turned 65, you’ve had quadruple by-pass surgery and now you’re a VEGAN??? Bill muttered “Who woulda thought?” Then, with an incredulous look on his face, Matt crudely asked, “Does that suck?” But the unflappable President Clinton handled the answer perfectly; chuckling and saying,

“No, no; you know, when you get older, your appetites change and abate and you’re more interested in having another good day — so I’d like to have as many good days as possible and this seems to be the best way to do it.”

I absolutely love it. A former president of the United States talks candidly about a plant-based diet without being defensive; but rather being positive about the implication that eating a plant-based diet will help you maximize the number of good days in your future.

And Mr. Clinton was very impressive during the earlier part of the interview when he talked emphatically about the need for more “cooperation” and a lot less politics. He said that conflict works much better for TV ratings and for getting elected, but when you’ve got big problems on your hands, the only way you’re going to solve them is with cooperation.

As for big problems, they were talking about the great recession that started three years ago and almost crippled the world’s economy. And they talked about how that it will be another few years before the U.S. and the global economy recovers.

This is how much arable land is lost to land degradation in the world every year.

I will admit that a global economic collapse is a huge problem, but it pales in comparison to an entire world running out of food. And that’s the track we’re on right now — a track of eating a completely unsustainable diet throughout the Western world. And it’s getting worse day-by-day; not better — for four primary reasons:

  • It takes 20 times as much land on a per calorie basis to produce animal calories as compared to plant-based calories.
  • We’re losing land to degradation and erosion every year at an alarming rate — an area about the size of South Carolina.
  • The population of the world is growing at the rate of a new Grand Rapids, MI, every single day — 197,000 more people every day.
  • Hundreds of millions of people in China and India beginning to adopt our incredibly wasteful Western diet-style just as soon as they get a little money in their pocket.

Roughly 200,000 new people on planet Earth every single day -- about like having a new Grand Rapids, MI, every morning.

In addition to all of the above, our Western diet is destroying the environment and subjecting billions more animals to horrific suffering every single year. Right now, the number stands at 60 billion animals per year to feed the wealthiest 2 billion people in the world. With that number headed to 100 billion and higher, just consider what kind of problems we’re creating for ourselves — especially in light of the above four points.

As Mr. Clinton says, “What we need is cooperation” to solve big problems. And how do we get cooperation? With leadership that can build consensus, sell ideas to the people, develop a plan and make things happen. Since that kind of leadership is almost impossible in a politically controlled government, that’s why I recently suggested the concept of a “one-term” president who would not be distracted by having to get re-elected.

He/she would simply be focused on building the global cooperation needed to tackle the single greatest problem in the history of the world — bringing humankind back to a diet-style that enables us to feed our growing population while living in harmony with nature on planet Earth. So instead of that “one-term president” that I mentioned earlier, how about Bill Clinton? A former president who has first-hand knowledge of the power of a plant-based diet, I can’t think of a single person on the planet better equipped to pull together the cooperation we need. And he already has his “Clinton Global Initiative” up and running.

How about it Mr. President? With your influence and deft leadership skills, you could easily pull together a powerful and well-funded team with the likes of Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, and Ted Turner. Of course, you’d first have to ensure them that plant-based foods will provide them with plenty of protein — but after you cross that hurdle, it should be downhill from there — as those three great leaders have their own blinding flashes of the obvious, realizing that we can easily feed all of the world’s people with far less land, far less water, far less energy and far less environmental destruction.

We’re talking about a simple return to harmony — the way Nature always intended for it to be. Oh, and by the way, we can also eliminate up to 80% of our health-care dollars by simply teaching people how to take charge of their own health — and every human on the face of the Earth can join Mr. Clinton and have a lot more good days in their future.
