Peak Oil — Food Supply — Global Economy. All connected?

In addition to automobiles and airplanes, oil has a great deal to do with our food supply and the unsustainability thereof. 

Since beginning this blog in February 2011, I have featured the “peak oil” phenomenon in a number of my posts. As with most theories, there are some disagreements among the experts — primarily regarding WHEN peak oil will occur, not if it will. There is no disagreement on the following facts:

The USA reached peak in 1970 (beyond 2010, projections are shown) Notice separate peaks for lower 48, Alaska and deepwater.

  • Oil is a finite resource
  • Our consumption for the past forty years has been three times as great as our rate of discovery.
  • The rate of discovery has been declining for fifty years.
  • All wells, fields, and countries eventually reach a peak and then decline (See USA in graph)
  • The same will also happen to world production and may be happening right now.

So what’s all this got to do with food and eating a plant-based diet? Everything. That’s because the production of our Western diet is the single most inefficient (wasteful) process taking place on the planet today. Beyond taking charge of your health, how about taking charge of your planet as another good reason to shift to plant-based eating?

On a per calorie basis, it requires twenty times more energy to produce meat and dairy than the same number of plant-based calories. The potential energy savings of shifting to a plant-based diet are enormous.

That’s right — TWENTY times more energy per calorie. Want to become more educated on this crucial topic? In less than a half hour, you will know more than 99% of the population about this very important subject.

You may notice that none of the learned experts in any of these videos mention the possibility of saving enormous amounts of fossil fuels by shifting to a plant-based diet. Why not? Because, as we know, 95% of the humans in the Western world truly believe that we all “need” to eat animal protein. And that includes 95% of the doctors, the scientists, the elected officials and the “peak oil experts.”

Through more blogs like this, movies like Forks over Knives, and examples like President Clinton, that misconception can be changed. And in doing so, we shall change the world. Enjoy!

It’s mind-boggling to consider what has happened in just the past one hundred years. On a planet that has sustained life for billions of years, the human race has wreaked big-time havoc in a mere blink of history. Historians 200 years from now will write about the relatively short period from 1920 to 2020 when humans went wild burning a finite resource like it would last forever. They will write about the insane diet-style (and overall lifestyle) that were made possible by that super cheap, albeit temporary, energy resource.

Recently Dr. Sanjay Gupta was asked after his “Last Heart Attack” special if he thought that the heart disease-reversing plant-based diet was a bit too “extreme” to be widely accepted. He replied that 200 years from now that they will talk about what we are eating now as the “most extreme diet-style in the history of the world.”

The Bottom Line. If you watched the videos, you can easily see how the arrival of peak oil could have a devastating impact on the world economy. Our only chance to prevent economic collapse, riots, famine and wars is to re-engineer our lifestyles to require far less energy — NOW.

We also need to have time to develop many renewable sources of energy. Everyone shifting to a plant-based diet-style is the best possible way to give us the time we need for both. A few more of my earlier blogs on this topic:

Milk mustache, cancer, osteoporosis and beyond…

Here's how they spend part of that $165 million each year -- paying beautiful (but ignorant) people like Christie Brinkley to promote their deadly product.

As a boy growing up in semi-rural Tennessee, I got to experience first-hand the production of milk. In addition to his day job of selling livestock feed for the Quaker Oats Company, my father operated several small, commercial farms near Murfreesboro, TN, where I spent my sophomore and junior years of high school. I speak further about this experience in Chapter 4 of our book.

At the time, back in the early 60’s, I had never heard a single person challenge the fact that milk was perhaps the most perfect food. Dr. T. Colin Campbell, who grew up on a dairy farm in Virginia, had not even discovered the “dirty little secrets” of the dairy industry yet. Later, he would go on to discover that cow’s milk is perhaps the most powerful carcinogen ever discovered. But, back then, it was a given — milk is good for you and you should drink at least several glasses a day. And since we had a dairy farm, we could enjoy our milk as often as we wanted. We even pasteurized that milk in our own kitchen.

But that was fifty years ago, and although much has been discovered about the extremely harmful qualities of cow’s milk for humans, the mighty dairy industry continues to march on — promoting it’s harmful products to the tune of $165 million per year — just for advertising. While all of the prominent scientists and medical doctors referenced in our book agree that cow’s milk is one of the most damaging products that we can consume, our schools of nutrition and most of our nation’s celebrities seem to be working with the dairy industry to promote the continued use of this deadly product.

Even Dr. Benjamin Spock finally learned the truth about dairy (in conferences with Dr. Campbell) before he died and made that fact public in the final edition of his book. (See my earlier post on that topic below.) And now, we have a new group that is trying to spread the “still well-kept dirty little secrets” about milk. From their website at milkdocumentary.com:

Books are arriving and the college tour has begun…

"Big Blue" has hit the street.

Yesterday, I heard from a friend here in Stonington that her Healthy Eating, Healthy World copy had arrived. Perfect timing, with over 500 copies sitting in my living room, a few of the people at next week’s launch party will have already read our new book and will be able to tell others what they might expect.

It looks like our crowd will be over 200 people at the party — including the brother of a former president of the United States and the uncle of another. Can you guess his last name?In the interest of his privacy, we will not be revealing his identity at our party.

Also, my friend and book endorser, Alexandra Stoddard, just told me that Meryl Streep will be in her home next week as the filming for her new movie takes place here in Stonington. Alexandra tells me that she may try to influence Ms. Streep and her fellow cast members (Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carrell) to attend our book launch party.

College Tour. As I have blogged and written about in our book, my feeling is that the young people of the world will be leading the “great food revolution of the 21st century” and I tried to connect with them on every single page. That said, I have now begun my tour of New England Schools and in the past seven days have hit five of them: Yale, the University of Rhode Island, Brown University, Harvard, and M.I.T.

And last night I got a call from the special events coordinator at the Brown University BookStore, inviting us to participate in an on-campus event there on October 6. He said that the store will be ordering our book and that his event will feature two authors; me and the author of a new book featuring the farmers markets of New England.

With college students over six times as likely to consider themselves “vegetarian” than the average adult in the USA, I have long felt that they are the real key to rolling out this movement toward a global plant-based diet-style for humans. In an earlier blog, I told them so:
