Lincoln. A special man. A special leader. A special time.

See the movie. Get inspired. Take some action…

Lincoln…For your great-grandchildren. David Brooks reviewed Lincoln, the movie, in his New York Times column a few weeks ago. He began the article, “We live in an anti-political moment, when many people — young people especially — think politics is a low, nasty, corrupt and usually fruitless business. It’s much nobler to do community service or just avoid all that putrid noise.”And, after presenting a convincing argument, his review ended with,

Politics doesn’t produce many Lincolns, but it does produce some impressive people, and sometimes, great results. Take a few hours from the mall. See the movie.

I heeded his advice and saw the movie in Mystic, CT on 12-8-12. And I was not disappointed. The thing that struck me most about Abraham Lincoln was his powerful vision—coupled with a great combination of uncommon commitment, focus, and skill necessary to make that vision a reality.

A scene from one of the darkest hours of the move---when he visits a battlefield where thousands of lives were sacrificed for the good of billions of lives in future generations.

A scene from one of the darkest hours of the war—when he visits a battlefield where thousands of lives were sacrificed for the good of billions of lives in future generations.

As the Civil War drew to a close in 1865, Mr. Lincoln intuitively knew that he was in a very special place at a very special time and that it was his destiny to do the right thing—regardless of the odds. And with those odds stacked heavily against him regarding the controversial 13th Amendment to abolish slavery, he persevered to the bitter end—ultimately winning by the narrowest of margins.

It was almost like being down in a football game 49-0 at the end of the third quarter—only to pull out a 51-49 victory as the clock expires.

How great was his accomplishment? Arguably the greatest accomplishment of any American president ever. It established the United States of America on the world stage as the superpower of the future—the one that would become known as the nation willing to sacrifice almost anything to protect the freedom and dignity of all of its citizens, regardless of race, color, creed, national origin or sex. So how did Mr. Lincoln pull it off? As Brooks explained,

It shows that you can do more good in politics than in any other sphere. You can end slavery, open opportunity and fight poverty. But you can achieve these things only if you are willing to stain your own character in order to serve others — if you are willing to bamboozle, trim, compromise and be slippery and hypocritical.

Promoting health, hope and harmony on planet Earth

The human race is unknowingly destroying the ecosystem that sustains life on Earth as we know it. It will take an uncommon combination of vision and leadership to get us all back on the right track before it’s too late.

Time for even greater vision and leadership. Without a doubt, Lincoln will be remembered as one of the greatest visionaries and leaders of all time—even though he had to do a little bamboozling and compromising as he proved that sometimes the end does indeed justify the means.

Hooray for Lincoln and for all that he did—but my question is this? Which great leader is going to step forward with a powerful vision as it relates to the longterm sustainability of the human race? And what issue—past, present or future—could be move important than that?

Everyone knows that we have an obesity crisis, a health care crisis, a global warming crisis, a world hunger crisis, and a serious water crisis. But hardly anyone seems to know that the simple answer to all of the above—is an organized, deliberate and urgent move in the direction of a whole foods, plant-based diet for the human race.

Only a few of the world’s scientists have figured out that the human race is well along the path of destruction that will compromise nature’s ability to sustain life on this planet as we know it. Some scientists, as reported in the movie HOME, have predicted that unless we make some rigorous changes in how we’re “using” the planet by the year 2019, that we may have passed the point of no return.

The Bottom Line. We need another Lincoln now—at the right place at the right time. How ironic that that person might be the president whose destiny was only possible but for the actions of President Lincoln 147 years ago.

Presidents Obama and Clinton at the 2012 Democratic Convention

Presidents Obama and Clinton at the 2012 Democratic Convention

As I have blogged recently, President Barack Obama is the ONLY president that we’ve ever had who truly understands the consequences of how we’re using our planet to feed ourselves. Like Lincoln, he is at the right place at the right time—with the right knowledge and skills to get the job done.

And he has the most popular ex-President in our generation as an ally. Both Mr. Obama and Mr. Clinton have the knowledge and they have the political skills to make a HUGE difference in the next four years. But, even with all those things working in their favor, their task will be anything but easy. As David Brooks said,

If anything, the movie understates how hard politics can be. The moral issue here is a relatively clean one: slavery or no slavery. Most issues are not that simple.

And one of those issues that is not that simple is the one we’re facing about our “food choices” and the sustainability of our species. But, without a doubt, there’s never been a more important issue.

Let’s do all we can to promote the “Obama-Clinton” team to pull some Lincoln-esque levels of vision, commitment and focus out of their bag.

Eric, inspired by President Clinton, shares his story

No longer eating burgers and fries, Mr. Clinton learned how to reverse his heart disease from his consulting physician, Dr. Dean Ornish.

No longer eating burgers and fries, Mr. Clinton learned how to reverse his heart disease from Campbell, Esselstyn and Ornish—as Eric says.

A few months ago, a reader sent me a copy of one of his recent blogs. It was a letter to Bill Clinton—thanking him for influencing him to take charge of his health. The message and photos speak for themselves.

Dear Mr. Clinton,

You’ll probably never see this message, and I’ll probably never meet you.  But you initiated a profound change in my life, and started a process that extended and saved my life, so I am compelled to write this letter of thanks and share these thoughts with you.

In August 2010, I saw you interviewed on CNN.  You looked great, better and more presidential than I’d ever seen you look before.  The jowls and large bags under your eyes were gone, and your face was oval rather than round.  In the interview, you talked about getting back to your high school weight and reversing your heart disease by following a plant based diet, based on The China Study and other research by doctors Campbell, Esselstyn, and Ornish.

Eric, before he began to take charge of his health

Eric, before he began to take charge of his health

Your interview really caught my attention.  At the time, I was 51 and was taking over $1000 in medications per month.  I had Type 2 diabetes, my total cholesterol was 300, my blood pressure was 160/100, I was 280 lbs, my waist was 50 inches, my neck was 18.5 inches, and my shirt size was 3XL.

I had to sleep 10 or more hours per day and always felt exhausted.  All of my joints felt sore all the time, and I was not able to even tie my shoes, let alone walk up a flight of stairs, without feeling out of breath.

At 51, I couldn’t remember ever having a meal in my life that didn’t include meat or other animal products.  I’d been overweight for at least 25 years.  I didn’t know what a plant based diet was and had never heard the term before.  I’d tried every diet and method I could find to lose weight, including Atkins, South Beach, Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem, the Paleo Diet, etc.  I had attempted to strictly follow each of these diets, and had succeeded in losing up to 40 lbs on each.  But I eventually found each of these diets to be unsustainable, and not possible to practice permanently.  So each time when I slipped on these diets,  I quickly regained all the weight I’d lost and then some.

My doctor told me I probably wouldn’t live another five years unless I got my weight and medical problems under control, and suggested weight loss surgery.  As a final step before following that drastic advice, I googled “Clinton plant based diet” after watching your interview.  At that time, I was disappointed to find that my search did not return any book or plan I could follow.  But in the meantime, I bought a copy of The China Study, and while reading it,  searched for and hired a nutritionist to find out whether a plant based diet would work for me as it had for you.

Eric is now looking great---almost unbelievable.

Eric is now looking great—almost unbelievable.

Based on weekly meetings with my nutritionist and following her advice, I learned how to cook for the first time in my life. I stopped eating all processed sugar and learned how to eat a well balanced plant based diet of organic whole plant foods.

My new diet wasn’t just salads and apples, it included all the foods I like best, such as rice, potatoes, lasagna, Chinese stir fry, and Mexican food.  I also started walking for a half an hour each day with my new adopted dog Peety.  And by doing these things, I ended up losing over 100 lbs in 8 months.

In addition to my weight loss, my total cholesterol dropped to 130, my blood pressure is now 100/60, and my glucose and all other medical stats are normal or optimal, so I no longer have any symptoms of type 2 diabetes.  My waist size is now 32 inches, I have a 16 inch neck, and I wear a size medium shirt.

I now only sleep about 7 hours per night, but I feel well rested and filled with energy all day long.   My energy and mental clarity are through the roof compared to before, it’s as if I came out of a lifetime fog.  And I’m also on zero meds now, and no longer have any medication in my home except for a bottle of Advil.

Best regards, Eric

The bottom line. Great story. My question is this: When do you think our medical community might start showing people how to take charge of their health. I will bet you that Bill Clinton has done more for promoting health than 95% of all the medical doctors in this nation—combined. And he did it by simply making the right choices for the right reasons—with his success speaking volumes about what’s wrong with our nation’s overall approach to health care. Than you Mr. Clinton and thank you Eric for sharing your story.

Protein Shakes—No one needs them!

Not Teens! Not President Clinton! No One!

So why do so many people take them? Teens Turn to Protein Shakes to Pump Up – ABC News. That was the title of a recent article that caught my attention (See link below). So I decided to write one more blog about protein—and this may be my last one.

Another "interesting" vegan of the NFL---Tony Gonzalez of the Atlanta Falcons, veteran of ten pro-bowls.

A powerful vegan of the NFL—Tony Gonzalez of the Atlanta Falcons, veteran of ten pro-bowls.

In almost 700 consecutive daily blogs, I have probably mentioned the “protein myth” in at least 100 of them and I even set up a permanent page on this site (Protein) to provide ready access to our most misunderstood nutrient. As I have stated countless times, even most of our best educated scientists and physicians truly believe that we “need” to eat animal protein—even though a former president of the United States has decided to eat none. From the recent article that caught my eye:

Teens may be chugging protein shakes and taking other muscle-enhancing supplements more often than previously thought, researchers said…The study population consisted of 2,793 students with a mean age of 14.4 and almost equally divided among females (53.2%) and males (46.8%). Nearly 30% of the participants were black and about 20% were white or Asian.

Among boys, the authors found that more than two-thirds reported changing their eating to increase their muscle size or tone, and 90% exercised more to increase their muscle mass or tone. In terms of the prevalence of “unhealthy” behaviors:

  • 34.7% reported using protein powders or shakes
  • 5.9% reported using steroids
  • 10.5% reported using some other muscle-enhancing substance
The Williams sisters---veggie eating champions

The Williams sisters—veggie eating champions

Even though some of our most successful athletes in football, tennis, boxing and golf eat zero animal protein, that message is not getting to our youth.

Sadly, they’re headed down the path of body destruction in more ways than one—and their family physician is of almost no value when it comes to helping them choose the path to vibrant health. Maybe you can share this blog with any teenagers who you think might be receptive to this message.

Unlike animal protein, everyone who drives a vehicle not only “needs” but is required to have auto insurance. And my friends at ShopCarInsurance can help you find the best deal.

Listed below the source article are a half-dozen of my previous blogs on protein. Today is my 672nd consecutive blog and just this past week, I decided what I was going to give myself for Christmas. I have decided that my consecutive daily blogging streak will come to an end on my second anniversary of launching this site, February 9, 2013—with my 730th consecutive daily blog. So the countdown begins today—only 58 more until the streak ends.
