Thanks to Al Gore and most of the other so-called sustainability experts in the world, the average citizen has no idea that the leading cause of global warming is the raising of livestock for our dinner tables. Not only is it the leading cause, it may be contribute more greenhouse gases (GHG) than all other human activities COMBINED.

So how can dire news about global warming be a good thing? Because changing the way we eat may be the ONLY way to avert the upcoming “tipping points” being predicted by many creditable scientists.

It is also important to mention that the average citizen has no idea whatsoever regarding the severity and significance of those tipping points. They, like most of our leaders, remain comfortably unaware about many very important things in this world.

NY Times LogoBut the average citizen is beginning to accept the reality of climate change—largely due to a steady stream of informative articles like this 11-1-13 piece in the New York Times, entitled Climate Change Seen Posing Risk to Food Supplies (See link below). From the article based on a leaked draft U.N. report:

Climate change will pose sharp risks to the world’s food supply in coming decades, potentially undermining crop production and driving up prices at a time when the demand for food is expected to soar, scientists have found.

The report also finds other sweeping impacts from climate change already occurring across the planet, and warns that these are likely to intensify as human emissions of greenhouse gases continue to rise. The scientists describe a natural world in turmoil as plants and animals colonize new areas to escape rising temperatures, and warn that many could become extinct. The document also finds that it is not too late for cuts in emissions to have a strong impact on the future risks of climate change, though the costs would be incurred in the next few decades and the main benefits would probably be seen in the late 21st century and beyond.

Stephen Emmott BookSince reading Dr. Stephen Emmott’s book in early September, I have been thinking a great deal about the heightened URGENCY of our global situation. While there are many out-of-control problems that are primarily driven by our food choices, none of them appear to be as URGENT as global warming.

And, various noted people like Goodland, Anhang and McKibben all seem to agree that we’re approaching a critical tipping point as early as 2017. They also agree that none of our world leaders are taking any meaningful steps whatsoever to address that looming crisis.

Asteroid approaching EarthMaybe we should consider the imminent global warming crisis a good thing—almost like the asteroid type of problem described by Dr. Emmott in his book:

If we discovered tomorrow that there was an asteroid on a collision course with Earth and – because physics is a fairly simple science – we were able to calculate that it was going to hit Earth on 3 June 2072, and we knew that its impact was going to wipe out 70% of all life on Earth, governments worldwide would marshal the entire planet into unprecedented action.

That is what inspired me to think of the global warming crisis as an “asteroid” type of problem. And we can use that problem as real justification for immediately taking action to promote a global shift to whole foods, plant-based eating. Not only will it give us the BEST possible chance of averting the worst effects of global warming, the collateral benefits of that action will be enormous:

While addressing the leading cause of global warming, we also promote the health for all humans and slash the cost of healthcare around the world. Further, we ease the water crisis, stop the destruction of rainforest, end the needless suffering of billions of animals, foster the regeneration of harmony in our oceans and open the door to end world hunger through far better utilization of the world’s agricultural land. Our action would be a giant step toward promoting health, hope and harmony on planet Earth—and the longterm sustainability of humankind.—J. Morris Hicks

The host of benefits that result from helping people everywhere take charge of their health are enormous, and we can achieve those benefits by taking our message directly to the people; bypassing governments, politicians, food companies, big Pharma and other forces that will be threatened by our actions.

I keep thinking that we must enlist the support of the world’s most powerful leaders, and we must come together and formulate a plan of action over the next few months—not years. Maybe there is a way that we can help Bill and Melinda Gates (Pope Francis and others) embrace the vision for what is possible—potential improvements in the world that go far beyond the combined efforts of their respective organizations’ many noble initiatives.

In an interview with Charlie Rose referenced below, Bill Gates was described as having a burning desire to do everything within his power to make the world a better place. And, he and Melinda are indeed doing some very good things in their many efforts to take care of the poorest billion people on the planet. Yet, they don’t appear to be doing much to promote the essential systemic change to our unsustainable lifestyle described by Dr. Emmott.

There are 1100 people on the Gates Foundation payroll, yet none are tackling the number one cause of global warming or the number one cause of chronic disease or world hunger—all urgent problems primarily driven by the same thing—our food choices. While noble, their efforts appear scattered and will do nothing to help us avoid rapidly approaching tipping points—and the ensuing disasters that could lead to the collapse of our civilization and the ultimate demise of hundreds of thousands of species, including humanity.

On the other hand, Bill Gates seems to understand a great deal of the “Food Math” problem, but is pursuing solutions that won’t make much of a difference for another ten or twenty years. This is one of his quotes from the 3-21-13 article referenced below:

The global population is on track to reach 9 billion by 2050. What are all those people going to eat? With billions of people adding more animal protein to their diets — meat consumption is expected to double by 2050 — it seems clear that arable land for raising livestock won’t be able to keep up.

World BankThen there is Robert Goodland, environmental advisor for the World Bank for 23 years. In his video on 9-7-13 (see link below), he talks about a 2017 tipping point and says that reducing animal consumption by 25% would enable us to meet that GHG goal necessary to keep the temperature rise below 2 degrees Celsius. But, like Emmott, Brown and McKibben, he offers no plan for getting that done. With livestock producing 51% of GHG, Goodland says there’s no possible way that we’re going to avert that 2017 tipping point without significantly reducing the GHG produced by the livestock industry.

My conclusion is that we must launch a HUGE global campaign promoting the demand for whole, plant-based foods while lowering the demand for meat, dairy, eggs, fish and highly processed foods. We need to go directly to consumers all over the world as we educate, motivate and legislate in a way that will influence hundreds of millions of people to move quickly in the direction of a whole foods, plant-based diet. We can’t change laws or get governments around the world to move quickly, but individuals around the world can decide for themselves to radically change what they eat, and they can make that change in just a few days—just like James and Suzy Cameron did 18 months ago. Gates FoundationWhat would happen if Bill Gates fully understood the global warming crisis that Emmott, Goodland & McKibben are talking about? And the “blinding flash of the obvious” solution that we’re talking about? He’s a very smart man who cares a great deal about the welfare of people all over the planet. He and Melinda also control the wealthiest philanthropic organization in the world.

In spite of the growing CLARITY and URGENCY, most of our leaders and thinkers are still “sleepwalking off a cliff”—totally unaware of what is happening and what they could do about it.

But there are two highly influential people on the world stage who are FULLY aware of what is happening—James and Suzy Cameron. From a recent memo from Suzy:

Yes…we have both read “10 Billion” and I have already given quite a few copies out. It is sobering and completely reinforces the urgency that we feel with each passing day. I too am astounded at how many people are just not aware of where we are headed as a civilization.

Even the very well established environmental groups are clueless to the food/environment connection. I have been running in these circles for the last two decades and I just started being aware a year and a half ago after I watched Forks Over Knives and started reading everything that I could get my hands on.

I wonder if Bill Gates has read Emmott’s book. (Emmott is a Microsoft scientist) What would Bill have to say about all of this if he really understood the urgency we’re describing? Emmott’s quote:

Why we are not doing more about the situation we’re in— given the scale of the problem and the urgency— I simply cannot understand.

Stephen Emmott One final note re Dr. Emmott. Following our recent October 9 meeting in London, he cautioned me about “leading” with some specific future “tipping point” that may very well not happen in the predicted three or four years. As he says, it’s impossible to determine exactly when something as complicated as climate change may actually reach a tipping point.

Our entire effort would lose credibility if we rallied the troops around some future event that didn’t happen right on schedule. Rather, we should focus on the imminent issue of global warming and doing all than we can to remove the #1 cause—raising animals for food.

While I am sorry that they were “massively disappointed,” I must admit that they made a good point. So I responded to them via email with further explanation. First, the very well-written note from Barbara and Jack:

Hello Mr. Hicks, We were drawn to read this post by the teasing line “… massive awareness campaign aimed at preserving our planet’s ability to sustain our species indefinitely” and were massively disappointed. With due respect, we don’t understand how anyone can pretend to address sustainability issues and not even mention that with 7 billion people on this planet and more arriving every second, the human species is grossly overpopulated.

Against this growing population, it is our observation that there is no “magic” in the form of a change in diet, lifestyle or technological advancement that will delay – let alone halt – the environmental destruction we’re witnessing. Henry Thoreau observed that most people hack at the leaves and branches rather than at the root of the most pressing issues. True 160 years ago; true today.

Thank you for your comment. First of all, I totally agree with you about population control. We’re probably already well past the carrying capacity of our planet in terms of the number of humans—and it continues to worsen at the rate of about 200,000 people a day. If you read more of my 800+ blogs, you will learn that I frequently speak about the fact the we humans have three major problems when it comes to sustainability:

If all seven billion people on this planet tried to eat the way we do in the USA, we'd need two planet Earths to feed us all. We only have one and she is in trouble when it comes to her ability to sustain us as a species.

  3. The way we eat.

I figure that the first two will take decades, if not centuries, to bring into harmony with nature. But any single person can change what they eat overnight—the way Jim and Suzy Cameron did 18 months ago.

Since the way we eat determines how the world is used, eating a plant-based diet (on a per calorie basis) will require 90% less land, water and energy than eating a meat & dairy based diet. Our SOS mission is to get that message to the top two billion people in the world. The others will follow. We simply don’t have the time or resources to do everything we need to do—in terms of curbing population growth or excessive consumption.

As an industrial engineering student at Auburn, we were taught to always look for “the best bang for the buck.”

So for me, trained as an industrial engineer, I am focusing on the action that will provide the “biggest bang for the buck” in the shortest amount of time. We’re approaching a number of tipping points in the next ten years and we simply must figure out a way to make some big changes quickly.

After studying this topic since 2002, I finally reached this conclusion in just the past year:

“Shifting to a whole food, plant-based diet will do more to ensure the long-term survival of our species than ALL other possible initiatives combined.”

And there has never been a bigger win-win-win scenario in the history of humankind. While annihilating heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, eliminating most cancer and slashing the cost of healthcare—we also curb global warming, ease the water crisis, end world hunger, conserve fossil fuels, save the oceans, rivers, aquifers & rain forests, and end the needless suffering of billions of animals.

He agreed that changing what we eat (eating more plants) would be much easier and quicker than trying to control our population or change the way we live.

My silence has ended—and I have a lot to report.

Update on our SOS Global Initiative — a massive awareness campaign aimed at preserving our planet’s ability to sustain our species indefinitely.

My last blogpost was over a month ago—39 days to be exact. Some of my readers have reached out to find out why I had suddenly gone silent; so now I will share that information with everyone.

First, let me say that I have never felt better about my role on this planet and am looking forward to a highly productive and gratifying future.

A little background. Over the past few years, I have shifted away from talking about “saving the planet,” having concluded that the planet is going to be just fine. She’s been supporting life for billions of years and has seen millions of species come and go. And no matter how much damage our species inflicts on her—she will survive. It’s our future as a species that’s in jeopardy.

Hopefully, we won’t go the way of the Rapa Nui on Easter Island (link contains video), who wastefully depleted their finite resources until their civilization collapsed. Although we humans have inflicted more damage on the fragile harmony of nature in just the last fifty years than all generations of humans before us (combined)—we still have time to reverse that deadly trend. But we URGENTLY need to get started in a big way.

So for the past two months, I have been positioning myself to do all that I can to help facilitate the urgent lifestyle changes necessary to reverse the deadly trends. As I always say, any worthwhile project begins with vision and leadership. So, in chronological order, here is what has transpired:

9-5 My first letter to James Cameron. (via email to his assistant). Having concluded that he was the most influential person in the world who truly “gets it” about the world-changing consequences of our food choices, I decided to reach out to him.

9-5 Ten hours later, we (Colin and I) were invited to dinner in Malibu. Knowing that Forks Over Knives had greatly influenced the Cameron family, I had requested that Mr. Cameron agree to a two-hour meeting with me and Dr. T. Colin Campbell.

9-14 Dinner at the Cameron’s Malibu home. The two-hour meeting request resulted in a full six hours at the Cameron residence; four hours of meeting and two hours of dining. It was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life.

9-21 Speaking to 500+ in Tucson at the Healthy You Network conference. This event had been booked for months but I didn’t finalize my presentation until after the Cameron event in California. The mostly vegan crowd absolutely LOVED hearing that prominent people like Jim and Suzy Cameron were getting serious about the species-saving mission of promoting plant-based eating around the world.

9-29 Signed speaker contract with ExploreGreen.com My friend Susan Benigas introduced me to the founder (Paul Zemitzsch) of Explore Green, a speakers agency that focuses primarily on environmental and sustainability topics. And since public speaking is my primary means of earning a living these days, I have packaged myself as a sustainability specialist—with a heavy emphasis on the crucial importance of our food choices.

10-4 and 5. My first international speaking engagement in Italy. I flew into Rome on October 3 and was met by my client, who drove me across the mountains to San Benedetto del Tronto on the Adriatic Sea. I was privileged to speak through an interpreter to a highly enthusiastic group at the inaugural conference of La vita e bella, founded by Susanna Piccioni earlier this year.

10-6. Was driven to Rome by the Managing Director of the Raphael Hotel there. Roberto Vannoni had attended one of my lectures and was most interested in the species sustainability issues that I presented. During our three-hour trip, we discussed the possibility of his reaching out to Pope Francis with our world-changing, species saving message. There are 1.2 billion Catholics in this world who might like to learn how to promote their own health while preserving the planet’s ability to sustain our species.

But I gladly took the time to visit with the top Microsoft scientist who had published his book TEN BILLION the month before. I had asked for 30 minutes, he gave me 75 and we had a great discussion about how we could launch an “asteroid” type project to greatly curb global depletion by influencing the top two billion people in the world to shift aggressively in the direction of plant-based eating.

10-11 James Cameron calls a meeting. As I was de-planing in Newark, NJ, after my flight from Heathrow—and less than one month after our Malibu meeting, I received word that Mr. Cameron had scheduled a plant-based summit for November 24 at the Cameron’s Santa Barbara ranch. Stay tuned for more news on this all-important process.

10-12 through 10-31. Moving from Stonington to Stamford. In order to better position myself for an extensive schedule of speaking and consulting, I had made the decision in August to move closer to New York.

I am now a just six minute walk from the Stamford train station and I-95, both of which I can see from my desk at my new home. Although moving is never any fun, this time I was able to greatly simplify my life, unload a ton of STUFF and position myself for focusing my mind on what’s most important. And what could be more important than the longterm sustainability of humankind?

10-24 Appeared on the Dr. Don Wagner Show in Arizona. This is about the fifth time that I have appeared on his show since my book came out two years ago. This one took place amid a sea of moving cartons on my last night in my Stonington home.

10-27 Conducted a PowerPoint Presentation via Skype with a vegan group in Canada.

In summary, it’s been a great two months: getting to know Jim and Suzy Cameron, speaking to over 500 people for the first time, my first international speaking engagement (with translator), spending time with Dr. Stephen Emmott, and conducting my first ever Skype presentation to a live audience.

Now, with my move behind me and my head cleared, I am all set to devote my full attention to doing all that I can to make our S.O.S. Global Initiative successful. One of the highlights of my trip was meeting these two wonderful people shown here. Peggy Straus on the left is the granddaughter of the great Max Gerson.
