Jamie Oliver and Michelle Obama…”Eat Your Veggies”

Doing some good things, but still lacking the “clarity” that we need.

Celebrity Chef Jamie Oliver is featured in the cover story of the August 2011 Delta Sky Magazine that I read inflight earlier this week. As it states on the cover:

“The Real Food Movement. Jamie Oliver is leading the crusade to rethink the way we eat–and cook.” Then, on page 50, the article by Peter Smith is entitled “Eat Your Veggies” and leads off with:

“TV has helped the cause, but this revolution is not being televised. The crusade to get us to eat real food (that we make) is gaining traction in kitchens, cafeterias and boardrooms the world over.”

I applaud what Jamie Oliver is trying to do, and I am sure that he is helping some people eat a healthier diet — by adding more whole plants to their daily routines. But, a quick review of his website at JamieOliver.com tells me that Jamie has a recipe for any kind of animal product that you might like to cook.

On the one hand, Jamie tells us we should eat more vegetables, but he doesn’t tell us how much of them we should eat to promote vibrant health or reverse heart disease. Like Michelle Obama, he fails to tell us about the health dangers of routinely eating animal foods, and neither of them even mention that our meat and dairy laden diet is simply not sustainable for very much longer.

The Clarification Issue. The big difference between our 4Leaf message and the message of eat your veggies that you have heard your entire life from lots of well-meaning people beginning with your mother — is that we tell you exactly what you need to eat to be the healthiest that you can be. You may not choose to eat at that highest, near-optimal level, but at least you will know what it is. Our 4Leaf concept is based on the common ground body of knowledge of five prominent medical doctors in our book and the simple explanation of the optimal diet by Cornell’s Dr. T. Colin Campbell, “The closer we get to a diet of whole, plant-based foods, the better off we will be.” How simple is that?

For most of us, we have been hearing all our lives that we should be eating more fruits and vegetables, but for the past fifty years, we have been eating less and less. Why? As factory farms and fast food companies joined forces and were aided by government subsidies; they have made it possible for most consumers in the Western to afford to eat meat and dairy and every meal.

Ruth's Chris Steak and Veggies. Most Americans sadly would think of this as a very healthy meal. Percent of calories from whole plants in this meal is about 2%.

The problem is that our love affair with meat and dairy and highly processed foods has taken its toll on our health and our environment. And, the whole mess continues to get worse every year. Obviously the sage advice from our mother has not been heeded. And at best the whole plants, like a few pieces of asparagus next to a gigantic Ruth’s Chris steak, have become no more than   an ornament next to the “main course.”

Let’s face it, over the past fifty years, most people in the Western world have become accustomed to eating at least one form of animal protein at every single meal. It is usually called the main course and most of us wouldn’t even consider it a real meal if it weren’t there. Although nature intended for us to be herbivores, humankind began eating meat just as soon as he learned how to kill and cook other animals. But only recently has that activity gotten completely out of control.

Humans have only been eating those animals in great quantities during our lifetime — a mere blink of history. And it’s not just the unhealthy animal foods, the remainder of our diet is primarily comprised of highly-refined carbohydrates, along with too much fat, too much salt, too much white flour and too much added sugar. We humans are following our natural cravings in an exceedingly unnatural world.

Leveraging the simple, yet powerful concept of maximizing the percent of your calories from whole plant foods -- still in nature's package

We must clarify. We’ve proven that simply encouraging people to eat more veggies is not going to get the job done. Now, we must begin providing much needed clarity in an ever-confusing world. And we need to do it soon. In our 4Leaf Program, we have done just that — in a simple, positive, flexible and powerful manner. In a nutshell, for optimal health:

Simply maximize the percent of your daily calories from whole plant foods — with a target of 80% to achieve the 4-Leaf level. Eat all you want from a wide variety of whole fruits, veggies, grains, legumes, nuts and seeds — and keep your total percent of calories from fat below 20 percent.

While we’re not recommending the “routine” consumption of any animal foods, we’re not going to make a big deal about it if you have an occasional piece of cheese or fish with some of those “non whole plant” calories. We just recommend that you don’t make those animal food dishes a part of your normal routine. As Dr. Campbell says, “If you plan to regularly eat animal foods, you will more than likely eat way too much of them.”

Once again, kudos to Jamie Oliver, Michelle Obama and others for trying to help our children eat better. But, lets tell them and their parents exactly what they need to eat in order to promote vibrant health, prevent or reverse chronic disease and nurture our fragile environment — all at the same time. Michelle, it’s time to tell the world about “meat & dairy.”

Grassroots Revolution 101 — reaching the “mainstream”

Leveraging an artful blend of modeling and marketing

A reader from Minnesota recently suggested that we get serious about launching that grassroots revolution that I have been talking about on my blog. So, I thought I would get that ball rolling by sharing some of my thoughts on the subject. Here’s what Greg had to say:

“I have just begun reading your site the past few days. I cannot agree with you more on everything I’ve read so far. I have blogged the same type of info to my family and friends for years, and it mainly falls on deaf ears.

You mentioned that possibly a grass roots group could help promote the change we need to see. Why don’t you/we start one? Get people to sign their names to a list, agreeing to a basic nutritional standard- plants/your 4 Leaf idea. I know there are LOTS of people who would participate. Let’s get going! Time is a wasting, and so is the environment and the health of the general population. Thanks for your wonderful work, Greg.”

As Greg probably knows by now, I wrote a blog last week that was addressed to college students and graduates under 30. I believe, for several reasons, that they will be the key players in this revolution:

  • College students are six times more likely than all other American adults to be already eating mostly plants. (18% vs. 3.2%)
  • As more and more of them learn about ALL of the reasons for eating this way, that 18% could double quickly.
  • They also love to get behind a cause; especially one that takes on the “establishment system” (government-medicine-media-academia) that has been lying to them and their parents for the past fifty years.
  • Not yet loaded down with career and family pressures, they still have the time and the energy to participate heavily in something that they believe in.

Here’s that post: To the collegiate army that will change the world — this is for you, in which I explain that the young people will probably do most of the heavy lifting in our grassroots revolution.

The tone of our message. As Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in this world.” And I think we can be a model AND spread the word without proselytizing. Having a background in fashion and marketing, I am trying to package our message for the mainstream. I know that less than 5% of Americans are vegetarian or vegan and I also know that many of the other 95% thinks that most vegetarians are weird — and not the kind of people they want to emulate. So how do we reach that larger group?

Subtle marketing; the process of creating a desire for your product, service or idea in the mind of your target consumer without that person ever having any idea whatsoever that they have been “sold” anything. My former boss, Ralph Lauren, was a master at doing just that. Steve Jobs does a pretty darn nice job as well.

Publisher -- BenBella Books (the same publisher that brought you The China Study)

So for starters, we don’t call it vegetarian or veganism, we call it 4-Leaf for many reasons, but one of the main reasons is there is a certain negative stigma associated with those “v-words” in the minds of the majority of people.

We have also invested heavily in “packaging” of our products. For example, if our book doesn’t sell, it won’t be because of the cover — that big, beautiful, blue apple globe is a real eye-catcher that everyone seems to love. Hopefully, it will attract enough attention that the casual book-shopper will see the primary endorsement (Dean Ornish, MD, — one of Clinton’s doctors) above the title on the front cover.

Dr. Ornish provides the expert name recognition to “validate” the approach from a health perspective. But, in addition to our total of four MD endorsers, we also three “mainstream endorsers” on the back cover; if we’re going to reach “mainstream” people, we’ve got to reach them with “mainstream” personalities that they trust and respect. Here are the three (of our ten endorsers) that we selected for the back cover:

  1. For the environmentalists. John Robbins, best-selling author of a dozen books and world renown environmentalist — has sold millions of books
  2. For the business people. Paul Allaire, Fortune 100 CEO (Xerox 1990 to 1999) a name widely recognized throughout the global business community
  3. For everyone in search of a better life. Alexandra Stoddard, best selling author of Living a Beautiful Life and 26 other books…one of the most famous women’s lifestyle writers in the world.

Not your typical "vegetarian" option on the menu, the 4-Leaf Challenge leverages the power of whole, plant-based foods to help people everywhere learn how to take charge of their health - and so much more.

We have also hired a professional branding and marketing company who designed our 4-Leaf logo and came up with the “4-Leaf Restaurant Challenge;” creative chefs = great taste! We intend to test that concept in Stonington, CT; then roll it out across the country in the months ahead.

Social change comes slowly, but it is coming. It is inevitable that it will happen well before the end of this century. But with the efficiency of the internet, coupled with great packaging and marketing, I am hoping that this great social change will happen within my lifetime — over the next 30 or 40 years. And I am working daily do my part.

Michelle Obama seems to have the ear of the former president in this picture; just think what they could accomplish if they teamed up to tell the world the truth about nutrition.

Greg from Minnesota asked about getting Michelle Obama to join our revolution. As for her, the person who should be able to influence her best is former President Bill Clinton. Not sure if he has connected all the dots relative to the global urgency of our moving back to our natural diet, but he is pretty much eating the way I do; and the positive results are obvious. I suggested to Michelle (in a blog to her recently) that she have a nice long lunch date with the former president soon. Michelle, it’s time to tell the world about “meat & dairy.”

Bottom Line. Back to the opening line: an artful blend of modeling and marketing; we need to “be the change we want to see in this world” AND we need to develop and promote a product that “mainstream” people will find attractive. As the process begins to gain traction, people will ask us questions, and we’ll answer and help them as courteously and as non-judgmentally as possible. Gradually, just as with cigarette smoking, our harmful and wasteful Western diet will no longer be cool — as people eat more and more health-promoting, planet-friendly whole, plant-based foods.

Countdown. Just 47 days until our book launch party; expecting 200 + in attendance, including two of those four book cover endorsers mentioned earlier. Where are you going to be on September 29? If you’re going to be near Stonington, CT, shoot me an email and I will forward you an invitation to that party. jmh@jmorrishicks.com

“A Return to Harmony” — the final chapter of our book

Earlier this week, I got my final quick look at our completed book before it hits the presses. Not having time to read every chapter, I concentrated on the all-important beginning and ending — the Introduction and Chapter 11, A Return to Harmony. As with many other things in life, if you start out right, and finish strong, everything else seems to fall into place.

As I carefully read the final chapter for the last time, I once again realized that our “return to harmony” with nature is really what it’s all about. And what we choose to eat is a HUGE part of that process. After beginning my journey in 2002, I have progressed from being just a health enthusiast, to an environmentalist, to the activist that I have become today. That said, our final chapter in the book should be regarded as a call to action.

Chapter 11 — A Return to Harmony (an excerpt)

“Faced with what is right, to leave it undone shows a lack of courage.” —Confucius

Publisher -- BenBella Books (the same publisher that brought you The China Study)

The world’s scientists have recorded over 50,000 vertebrate species on planet Earth, including some 5,500 species of mammals. Other vertebrates include fish, reptiles, birds, and amphibians. Beyond the vertebrates are about 1 million named spcies of insects, and scientists estimate that millions more are yet to be discovered. For eons, all of those species lived in harmony with each other and their natural environment—until recently. Over the past century, the human species has distinguished itself as the only one that is not living in harmony with the rest of the planet.

What is needed to correct this problem is a blinding flash of the obvious. One of the geniuses of the modern era, Albert Einstein, said it best: “Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances of survival for life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.”

Deep down inside, we may have all sensed for some time that some- thing was terribly wrong with our way of life and its host of negative consequences for our planet. We just haven’t had a clear understanding of what it was, how it got that way, or what—if anything—we could do about it. I hope your vision of what’s wrong with this picture is more in focus now that you better understand the staggering damage that has resulted from our way of eating. Returning to a more natural diet for our species won’t solve all our problems overnight, but it will be a pretty good start.

In a mere blink in the lifespan of our planet, we got into this mess; maybe we can get out of it in even less time. If all of this makes sense to you, then it’s time to come to grips with what it means. With this new knowledge comes responsibility. Now that you know how to easily solve the health-care crisis, make tremendous environmental improvements, greatly reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, feed the hungry, and end the widespread suffering of animals, what are you going to do with that knowledge? Simply knowing something doesn’t change anything or make anything better. An ancient Persian proverb states, “It is nothing for one to know something unless another knows you know it.” Every single person can make a difference by actively participating in a collective return to harmony. Beginning with just a few people, this grassroots effort can gather momentum quickly.

By simply eating a health-promoting diet, we have the power to reverse many personal and worldwide problems. When enough people participate in changing their eating habits, the markets will respond, and the movement will gain momentum. With a solid understanding of the enormity of what is at stake, you can make a difference. Even better, you can help others understand as well. Are you going to keep this knowledge to yourself?

Obviously, you can start with sharing what you’ve learned with your own family, beginning with your children. By helping your children adopt this powerful way of eating, you will be ensuring not only their lifelong health but also the health of future generations of your family. Beyond your children and other close relatives, you can share your newfound knowledge with other people you care about. Without being preachy or proselytizing, you can share what you know with those who show an interest. They will pass the good word along.

You might also think about starting a study group in your community, writing to your legislators at the state and federal level, submitting articles to local newspapers, hosting speakers in your community, or organizing a proactive task force to spread the word on your college campus. Or you can aim lower. Help just three people understand what you have learned about the world-changing power of plant-based nutrition, and influence them to make some changes in their own lives.

If each person reaches just three people over the course of a year, we could dramatically change the world in less than five years. This is how to launch a grassroots revolution in health-care and so much more—by spreading the information to as many people as possible. Then, we hope, we will live to see the day that our highly inefficient, destructive, and disease-promoting Western diet is simply “not cool” anymore—much like cigarette smoking. How many people do you need to start a revolution? History tells us that you don’t need as many as you might think—a lot closer to 10 percent of the population than 50 percent.

In a world full of sick, obese, or starving people, suffering animals and rapidly disappearing natural resources; how can we possibly not come together and end all of this madness once and for all? Given what you now know—if you don’t take action—what will you tell your adult grandchildren someday when they ask why you didn’t?

Ultimately, your decision is a simple matter of health, hope, and harmony. As each of us begins to take charge of his or her own health, we simultaneously plant the seeds of hope, accelerating the pace with which the human race can return to living in harmony with nature. Since we consider ourselves smarter than all the other creatures, we should be able to figure out how to make our world a better place. The time for that action is now.

“You may never know what results come of your action, but if you do nothing, there will be no result.”—Mahatma Gandhi
