The “Harmony Project” from Ithaca, New York

Today, a group of us are meeting in Ithaca, NY, with Dr. T. Colin Campbell to talk about The Harmony Project, an incredibly simple process for paving the way for the human race to return to living in harmony with Nature. My conclusion is this:

The single most powerful step that we humans can take to restore harmony on our precious planet, is the deliberate, widespread and well-planned adoption of a whole foods, plant-based diet. And the stakes are beyond comprehension.

Ithaca, NY, home of Cornell University and Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry.

For the past four weeks, I have written a series of six posts that address the single biggest impediment that we face in terms of executing the above. These six posts outline the problem, summarize the enormity of what is at stake and put forth a plan for removing that impediment — the almost universal belief that we truly “need” to eat animal protein in order to healthy.

1. As Jobs would say, “Let’s get crazy enough to change the world.” Seven billion people — not enough water, land or energy. “People who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world — are the ones who do.” —-Steve Jobs. This was the first post where I mentioned that the “protein myth” was the single biggest obstacle that we face in opening the floodgates for a series of incredible improvements in our world. The next five blog posts develop this thought further

2. “Thinking differently” and changing the world…(10-28-11) Aspiring to join the the Steve Jobs “crazy ones,” we must think differently. And that means turning negatives into opportunities. For example, if you are now eating nearly 100% plant-based, there is one question that you have heard more than all others combined. Where do you get your protein? Many plant-eaters consider this question an annoyance; but I prefer to see it as opportunity. How so?

3. Topping 7 billion on Halloween — Very scary indeed. But there are many things happening that are much scarier than goblins. Yesterday was Halloween. And, according to the United Nations, it was the day that the human race officially reached the seven billion mark. Time Magazine reported in their 9-31-11 issue that we have now added four billion people in just the past fifty-two years.

Hopefully President Clinton and his Global Initiative will play a prominent role in Project Harmony.

4. Clinton Foundation seeks ideas to change the world…Let’s tell them about the greatest world changing opportunity in history. I have been thinking for a long time about the single most important thing that Mr. Clinton could do for us: Simply dispel the “protein myth” that most people believe — the myth about actually needing to eat animal protein.

5. Reaching the 95% who still eat meat; a plan Since beginning my blog nine months ago, I have often referred to the estimated 95% of the American public who still “believe” that they must eat animal protein to be healthy. That is based on my informal poll of “mainstream” non-vegetarian audiences in twelve months of speaking engagements since completing my book.

6. What does it take to change the world? Maybe less than you think. Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.-—Margaret Mead

Discussion Outline for Ithaca Meeting. With the above six posts as background, our discussion today will focus on the key steps that we must take in order to successfully execute Project Harmony.

  1. The Message. Crafting the simple and powerful message that we want to become common knowledge throughout the world.
  2. The Proof. The scientific and clinical foundation of proof and unquestioned credibility that will validate this message for all concerned.
  3. The Messenger. Selecting the ideal messenger; the voice that will lend the most credibility to a message that will be challenged by many.
  4. The Leader. The individual or institution best suited to drive this project forward.
  5. The Funding. How much funding is needed, how soon, what are the most likely sources and how do we approach the most likely sources?
  6. Planning the Process. Who should be on our team? What are the next steps?

Ending the madness. For the environment

In our book’s final chapter, entitled A Return to Harmony, we appeal to caring and thoughtful people everywhere to come together and “end the madness” of the many components and consequences of our grossly harmful, wasteful, cruel and unsustainable Western diet. The last two paragraphs are provided here:

A light of hope on the horizon - a spectacular view of the Mediterranean region from space

In a world full of sick, obese, or starving people, suffering animals and rapidly disappearing natural resources; how can we possibly not come together and end all of this madness once and for all? Given what you now know—if you don’t take action—what will you tell your adult grandchildren someday when they ask why you didn’t?

Ultimately, your decision is a simple matter of health, hope, and harmony. As each of us begins to take charge of his or her own health, we simultaneously plant the seeds of hope, accelerating the pace with which the human race can return to living in harmony with nature. Since we consider ourselves smarter than all the other creatures, we should be able to figure out how to make our world a better place. The time for that action is now.

“You may never know what results come of your action, but if you do nothing, there will be no result.”—Mahatma Gandhi

Today, I have selected a few previous posts that clearly represent what I mean by the word madness. It’s happening all the time, but hardly anyone is aware of it and the devastating consequences that it is having on so many crucial issues — beginning with our own health. Here are three posts on how our madness affects the environment:

Burning trees in the Amazon — to feed pigs in China We’re not the only nation that has become addicted to the most harmful, wasteful, and unsustainable diet in history; the Chinese are now going after our “Western” diet in a big way. End the madness; a new weekend series.

Salmonella Factory -- How cute!

The madness of our Western diet has become so prevalent that we hardly even recognize it anymore. Since none of us ever visits a slaughterhouse or meat-packing plant or personally witnesses the amputation of someone’s foot due to diabetes, we just go along our merry way eating our meat, dairy and egg meals — three times a day. We also continue to feed an even worse diet to our children.

Today, let’s talk about the egg. What comes to mind when you think of eggs and children? Easter eggs, Egg McMuffin, and Eggo waffles? What about salmonella and death? Today’s special two-minute video by Dr. Greger is provided here for your Saturday morning viewing pleasure — hopefully before you loaded the kids into the family SUV for a trip to McDonalds for a “hearty” breakfast…or should we say “heart-clogging” breakfast.

For more of Dr. Greger’s superior reporting, visit his website at nutritionfacts.org. Finally, as for ending the madness, everyone needs to watch these two powerful documentaries. Maybe not everyone; just the ones who claim to love animals or claim to care about our environment.

Just in case you haven’t seem them yet, get yourself some popcorn (or celery), and watch these great world-changing documentaries with your family (for free). They are about 1.5 hours each and are likely to leave you feeling differently about the role of the human race on our precious planet.
