In pursuit of healthy change; for the people, the planet, the critters.

Lots of great news about our bad -- and unsustainable -- food choices.

Yesterday, I watched the CBS Sunday Morning show that I had recorded over the weekend. With the exception of one story about the new Marilyn Monroe movie, the entire 90 minutes was dedicated to food — apparently because of the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend. So I scanned a few of the stories and watched all of some of the others. And, as I always do, was searching for some glimmer of hope that America was beginning to get the message about the need to eat healthier foods.

No such luck. With the exception of a nice story about apples, the show was a virtual showcase of our bad eating habits; disguised as being healthy for you. They had a lady talking about fat, another one featured olive oil and one was all about bagels and bialys. There was absolutely zero mention of what healthy eating might look like on Thanksgiving this year. But there was a lot of great news about our bad habits and, once again, there was much input that would add further to the widespread confusion about food that already exists.

It’s no wonder that I frequently hear from readers who have concluded that a move to healthy and sustainable eating will simply never happen — notes like this one from Salvatore last week:

To quote from the Broadway song: The Impossible Dream. That is what all of us, the plant eaters of the world have to contend with. Ten, twenty years into the future…it will never happen. The world will still be slaughtering, butchering, and gorging on the flesh of the innocent creatures.

So why am I optimistic about the eventual move in the right direction? It’s because of what I see and hear from readers once they have enough information. They began making much better decisions about food and they begin making permanent lifestyle changes for the right reasons instead of periodic dieting to lose weight.

I am frequently able to order a healthy 4-Leaf meal at almost any Italian restaurant. The key words here are clarity and precision.

Lately some readers have complained about the lack of healthy menu items in most restaurants. One asked today, “How do you get restaurants to change to a more vegan menu?  The task of change is overwhelming.  Italian restaurants would be the most difficult to change as they represent probably the largest number of eat-in restaurants in America.”

My answer is that restaurants, like most businesses, are out to grow their revenue and produce a profit. They are in business to make money and in order to do that, all businesses must sell what their customers want. When 20 or 30 percent of their customers start asking for more plant-based meals; that’s when you’ll start seeing them on the menu. In the meantime, I enjoy the process of creating my own delicious meals in almost any non fast-food restaurant.

Other readers have brought up ideas like public health classes to accompany a healthy school lunch program or lobbying the fast-food industry to provide more healthy options on their menus. All great ideas to be sure, and ideas that will come to life naturally once enough people become educated and start demanding change.

Healthy Fast Food, an oxymoron today, but could change quickly when consumers start demanding health-promoting plant-based food.

Our free market system will respond to what customers want. Right now, they want meat, dairy, eggs, sugar, oil and highly refined carbohydrates three meals a day — and that’s exactly what the market is giving them. Notice all those healthy choices on the sign?

Last week I blogged about reaching one billion people in the Western world with an informational campaign about the overwhelming evidence supporting the plant-based diet as the absolute healthiest food that we could possibly eat — and the most beneficial to our environment at the same time. One more thing; it’s also sustainable.

But being realistic, I conservatively estimated that a mere 40 million people (less than 5%) would likely make any major changes in their diets immediately following such a campaign. Change will still be gradual, but “dispelling the protein myth” will open the door. To re-cap my estimate of those 40 million (out of one billion reached) who will hear the message and run with it:

  • 30 million people (3%), most of whom are under 40, will read a few books on the subject, experience a “blinding flash of the obvious” and climb aboard the 4-Leaf train in a matter of weeks.
  • 9 million people (less than 1%) really “get it” and will become leaders of change in their communities)
  • 1 million people (1/10th of 1%), among the brightest and best educated people (those great thinkers) in the world — will begin writing, speaking, organizing and planning and leading the urgent change that will be needed to avoid economic collapse, chaos, wars or worse. This group will include people who are already powerful leaders; they just had not yet been told the truth about food.

The Bottom Line. Believe it or not, I am most enthusiastic about that one-tenth of one percent shown last. They’re the people that are going to make a real difference to the masses. Today, even our best and brightest thinkers and educators are still embracing that silly “protein myth” along with everyone else.

But as soon as we dispel that myth with a powerful campaign – many thoughtful and caring people everywhere will have a chance to experience their own blinding flash of the obvious regarding what we should be eating.

How funny is a child with high cholesterol? Pretty funny on SNL.

Please stay safe on this busiest travel day of the year; Happy Thanksgiving.

Last week, I blogged about the new recommendations from our National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute that we begin testing children for high cholesterol at the age of nine. (See Protecting Children link below) Not thinking anyone would be able to make a joke out of kids with high cholesterol, guess I had forgotten how Saturday Night Live made a joke last year about diabetes. Quoting from page 197 in the final chapter of our book:

Seth Meyers on SNL; if his humor helps us come to our senses, then he is providing a much-needed service.

Citing a new report from the CDC, the article (10-22-2010 in USA Today) says, “[O]ne in ten U.S. adults has diabetes now. The prevalence is expected to rise sharply over the next 40 years with as many as one in three having the disease, primarily type 2 diabetes, according to the report, published in the journal Population Health Metrics.”

The next evening on Saturday Night Live, Seth Meyers commented on that same CDC report during the Weekend Update portion of the show, saying, “That can’t be too surprising—for a country that uses fried chicken as bread.”

High cholesterol promotion kit -- works great for adults and kids of all ages; the KFC Double Down Burger.

Referring of course to KFC’s Double-Down sandwich (shown here) featuring bacon and cheese tucked between two fried chicken patties. Once again, Seth came through this past Saturday night, on 11-19-11, successfully making his audience laugh while describing the latest test for detecting high cholesterol in children. “The test is simple; just ask the child their name, and if they can’t answer because their mouth is full of bacon, they have high cholesterol.”

This kind of humor just reinforces the fact that everyone knows down deep inside what a toxic diet we’re consuming. We’re not just eating too much food; we’re eating the wrong food. And, our humor just reflects what people already know or suspect. But when does that humor influence us to go a step further — to start taking the genuine protection of our children’s health seriously — just as 99.9% of the parents do when it comes to protecting them from predators.

Of course you know what follows high cholesterol in children right? Cholesterol lowering drugs for children.

And how do we protect our children’s health? By just saying NO to the rich Western diet that is loaded with meat, dairy, sugar, oil and highly refined carbohydrates. We know that up do 80 percent of our diseases (and our cost of health care) are driven by our food choices. We know those choices are bad, yet we keep on making those same bad choices.

Not interested in protecting your own health? Fine. But what about your children? If you’re not looking after their health, who is? This is no joking matter. Take them for a lifetime ride on the 4-Leaf Train. You, they and their children will be glad you did. Here’s that post about protecting our children and another one about Thanksgiving.

Protecting our children. And not just from predators.

Thanksgiving; being thankful for vibrant health and more.

Dispelling the “protein myth” and beyond; a report from Ithaca

Even with the powerful Cornell "brand" behind Dr. Campbell's efforts, the "protein myth" is still alive and well.

Yesterday in Ithaca, Dr. Campbell gave us a 90-minute summary of his 40-year attempt to dispel the “protein myth,” the one about us actually  “needing” to eat animal protein to be healthy. As we absorbed his incredible story, one involving politics at the highest levels of government, we quickly became totally aware that a direct attack on animal protein was not our best option.

As we all know, just because we might be right about something doesn’t mean that people will listen. We must exercise sound judgement as we move forward. I am often reminded of a poem that I learned in a high school drivers education course in 1960:

Here lies the body of Julian Gray, who died while taking the right-of-way; he was right, dead right, as he sped along, but he’s just as dead as if he’d been wrong.

Not sure what role he will play, but there's certainly a place in this movement for President Clinton and his CGI.

In an extremely complex system of government, academia, medicine, big-pharma and the food industry — where almost everyone truly believes that we need to eat animal protein to be healthy — it’s going to take a well-planned and deftly executed campaign of educating the Western world about the enormous benefits of plant-based eating — beginning with our own health. Along the lines of Eat this, not that…

Instead of choosing this message: Despite popular opinion and many authoritative voices to the contrary, the simple truth is that humans do not “need” to eat animal protein in order to be healthy. The fact is that it is literally killing us and destroying our planet in the process. My name is Bill Clinton and I approved this message.

We chose this message: Plant-Based Eating — Providing ALL the nutrition that you need for your health — while, at the same time — doing some wonderful things for your environment, your fellow man, and all living creatures. While eating in a manner that prevents or reverses heart disease, diabetes and cancer; each of us can reduce our total water consumption by 90 percent, free up three acres of land, and cut our total energy consumption by 30 percent. The positive implications on global water scarcity, energy crisis and world hunger are staggering. We are the U.N., the CGI (Clinton Global Initiative), and the ADA (American Dietetic Association) and we approved this message.

We concluded yesterday that the traditional approach of writing books and giving lectures is simply not getting the job done in terms of influencing enough people to embrace the world-changing, plant-based diet-style. We simply must take this message to people everywhere in a big way. To do so, we need to develop powerful, polished, totally credible, and exceptionally professional media to get this message to the wealthiest one billion people in the world above the age of 18.

And we need to get the message to them more than once; we may need to get it to them twenty times over the period of six months to a year, and then keep sending it to them indefinitely — or until our highly wasteful, harmful, cruel and grossly unsustainable Western diet is less popular than smoking is today in the United States.

To be sure, both the U.N. and the ADA (mentioned above) have already issued numerous statements in support of a  widespread move to plant-based eating. But they have been somewhat obscure, not well-publicized and remain virtually unknown to over 99% of the  general population. Here are two from 2009 and 2010 that I have covered in earlier posts:

United Nations. “A global shift towards a vegan diet is vital to save the world from hunger, fuel poverty and the worst impacts of climate change,” a UN report said today (June 2, 2010.“As the global population surges towards a predicted 9.1 billion people by 2050, western tastes for diets rich in meat and dairy products are unsustainable,” says the report from United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) international panel of sustainable resource management. (See link to my post on this topic)

ADA (American Dietetic Association. Vegetarian diets are often associated with health advantages including lower blood cholesterol levels, lower risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure levels and lower risk of hypertension and type 2 diabetes, according to ADA’s position. “Vegetarians tend to have a lower body mass index and lower overall cancer rates.” From a 2009 position paper.

The Bottom Line. Many people in science, medicine, industry, government and academia know that all of the above is true, but they’re trapped in a system that prevents them from changing that system. But we don’t need the approval of “the system” to change it. We just need to inform the the general public. And we need to inform them with an abundance of clarity; something they’re not used to seeing when it comes to what they should eat.

For a population accustomed to never ending “confusion” on this topic, many of them will rush to embrace the refreshing “clarity” of our campaign; particularly the young people, who will resent the fact that our “system” has been selling us all a bill of goods for so many years. Finally, the fact that the campaign will be sponsored by names (institutions and individuals) that they trust, the process will gain momentum much more quickly.

Dr. Campbell made it clear yesterday that he really liked the idea of this “mass education” program and will work with us to identify a few leaders who should be involved. I left Ithaca yesterday very enthusiastic about our prospects going forward. Stay tuned.
