Teenage diabetes rate triples in less than ten years.

And the so called “experts” are baffled by this turn of events.

This was one of big news stories of the week when it comes to health care in the United States. From a May 21, 2012 article in the New York Times (see link below):

Nearly one in four American adolescents may be on the verge of developing Type 2 diabetes or could already be diabetic, representing a sharp increase in the disease’s prevalence among children ages 12 to 19 since a decade ago, when it was estimated that fewer than one in 10 were at risk for or had diabetes, according to a new study.

The study, published online on Monday in the Journal Pediatrics, analyzes data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which has a nationally representative sample. While it confirmed that teenage obesity and overweight rates had leveled off in recent years and that teenage rates of high blood pressure and high cholesterol had not changed greatly, it found that the percentage of teenagers testing positive for diabetes and prediabetes had nearly tripled to 23 percent in 2007-8 from 9 percent in 1999-2000.

My comment posted on the Times site on 5-21-12. We have known for a long time that things like heart disease and type 2 diabetes were not due to bad luck or bad genes. Even in Korea, autopsies of fallen U.S. soldiers showed that 80% of them had advanced coronary artery disease. But there Asian counterparts had none, their arteries were free of fatty deposits. Why is that?

WE’RE EATING THE WRONG FOOD in the Western world. Although you won’t hear that from your MD or on the evening news, our food choices are driving up to 80% of our entire cost of heath care in this country. So why don’t we hear more about this? MONEY. There is simply not any money to be made by everyone getting healthy.

If you care about your children and all future generations in your family, you’ll learn how to take charge of your health now. Then you can teach your family. One of President Clinton’s doctors knows all about reversing heart disease and/or type 2 diabetes in 95% of the cases. Click here to hear what Dr. Dean Ornish has to say.

Sadly, you won’t find much help here. They’re in the disease-management business—not disease elimination.

Experts are baffled. According to the article, “They were not entirely able to explain why diabetes and prediabetes rates had continued to rise while obesity held steady, but they said it may have taken time for the disease to “catch up” with teenagers who were overweight or sedentary as children.”

My question continues to be the same. How can these so-called experts continue to ignore the clinical findings of so many prominent medical doctors? In addition to Dr. Ornish who has consulted with President Clinton, other doctors like Fuhrman, McDougall, Barnard and Klaper have had similar results.

Where is 60 Minutes when we need them? It seems to me that this story is powerful enough for our friends at CBS to “expose” our medical community and the American Diabetes Association for their failure to embrace and publicize the life-saving results from all these prominent physicians.

If 95% of the cases are reversible, why aren’t we hearing about it? And why aren’t parents of obese and diabetic children making more noise about this ongoing cover-up of the truth?

Worried about diabetes in your family and not happy with what you’re hearing from your doctor? Getting tired of hearing advice about managing this disease that they say has no cure? Dr. Michael Klaper (mentioned earlier) lives in California, but will conduct Skype sessions with patients anywhere. Contact him at drklaper@gmail.com and tell him J. Morris Hicks sent you.

Pfizer scientist sees the light with “Forks Over Knives.”

Every once in awhile I receive a note from someone I have never met—who has recently read our book. To hear about how our work is changing the lives of others is a special thrill for us. I received one of those spontaneous notes last week and wanted to share it with you.

The letter came from a 63-year old Pfizer scientist who, like most people, thought that his family was eating a healthy diet already. As he said below, he and his wife have always avoided red meat and have tried to include lots of fruits and vegetables in their diet. But, now in the twinkling of an eye, that’s all changed for John and his wife of thirty years. Perhaps you know people who could benefit from this compelling story. He writes:

Hi Jim,

This powerful movie has been changing the lives of millions since 2011. See link below to order from Amazon.

A friend gave me the DVD Forks Over Knives. My wife is 54 and I am 63. Some years back, as the Curator of the Mystic Aquarium, I did quite a bit of research on fish nutrition and published a couple of diets that changes the way fish are fed in public aquariums. You would think I knew something about nutrition!

My wife and I didn’t eat red meat and tried to include lots of vegetables and fruits in our diet. However, after watching FOK, we simultaneously looked at each other and I said, I’m doing it! She agreed.

I have a pretty good background in biology, so it didn’t take too many charts, graphs and stats to convince me that “something’s fishy” with the food industry. I am used to dealing in things “statistically significant” which is like saying if you look hard enough in the grass, someday you may come across a four leaf clover. Incidentally, I still work with fish—zebrafish in research. Fascinating work, but all irrelevant for more reasons than the obvious ones (like, who needs drugs when you can eat away disease!).

A colleague of mine who also is now working with the zebrafish is an acquaintance of yours and she gave me a copy of your book. As an author in my spare time (5 books published and more to come), I was impressed with the clarity of your writing as well as the excellent research. There was so much where I said. I knew that, but it never came into focus.

I have been on the diet 10 days and lost 9 pounds and bursting with energy. I also had two serious operations on my neck and currently have four of my vertebrae fused. I am usually in at least some pain ameliorated to some extent with massage therapy and acupuncture. At least I got off all of my meds for pain which wasn’t going to happen with the pain specialist I was seeing. However, with the diet, my neck feels almost normal and a bum knee that was operated on some 50 years ago, feels much better, a pain I learned to live with.

We just received the “Forks Over Knives” book and waiting for the recipe book. Saw your recipe section and we will be visiting it often. Also looking forward to visiting Stonington Village and trying out the restaurant you recommended. After all, we only live 15 minutes away, tops! Maybe we will run into you one of these days.

Thanks again for the excellent book and your blog. Both of us will be looking for it every day. So don’t get sick! John

I look forward to meeting John and his wife real soon. You may be wondering, “How does a seasoned Pfizer scientist make such a quick decision to take charge of his health with whole plants instead of drugs?”

He simply is exposed to some compelling facts about nutrition—for the first time in his life. The three sources listed below would be a good place to start for anyone. Posted here for your convenience—direct links to Amazon, where all three combined will cost less than $36:

Sailing on the Ideal 18, one of six in the SHYC fleet.

One more thing. There’s another Pfizer scientist who has made some big changes in his diet lately. A yacht club buddy of  mine, he’s 29 years old and only had to read about half of our book to know that it made complete sense to him. Like his colleague John at Pfizer, he knows that drugs are not the pathway to health—they’re simply helpful for very sick people who need some relief.

Without even trying to lose weight, Tim has lost about 20% of his total body weight and he’s only eating at the 2Leaf level on our 4Leaf scale. His father (in his fifties) just underwent some very invasive surgery for cancer—a procedure that Tim is confident could have been avoided had he learned the truth about nutrition early enough in his life to make a difference.

Hundreds of medical doctors learning plant-based nutrition

Since the T. Colin Campbell Foundation teamed up with eCornell in 2009, there have now been over 2,000 people who have earned their certificates in plant-based nutrition. And that group includes some 500 medical doctors, who receive continuing medical education credits for taking the course.

As you may know—in our book, and in several blogs—I have often written about the sad saga of what has happened to academic freedom in the United States—at least as it pertains to the study of nutritional science. Dr. Campbell now refers to it as “academic unfreedom,” a phenomenon why this same plant-based nutrition course is no longer available for credit toward graduation from Cornell University. Why is that?

Want to learn the truth about nutrition? This is a good place to start.

The short reason is that all schools of nutritional science in the United States are controlled by the food industry—just as our medical schools are controlled by the pharmaceutical industry.

It’s a truly sad state of affairs but one that is gradually beginning to change. What’s driving the change? The “big picture” truth about nutrition that has been told in The China Study and is now being taught to hundreds of medical doctors each year.

In the following video, Dr. Campbell talks about his second book which will be released in the spring of 2013. He’s not quite ready to go public with the title, but did share some insights in this 3-minute video. In his new book, he will focus on three key words: nutrition, medicine and health.

Scientific Integrity. The tagline of the Dr. Campbell’s foundations tells the story: Scientific integrity for optimal nutrition. We should all be thankful for this great man and his courage to stand up against the corruption that has spread throughout the mega system that controls what we eat and how we treat disease in this country. Here are a few of my recent posts on this new category “academic freedom” on this website.

With industry now controlling our schools of nutrition, is academic freedom dead?

Academic “Unfreedom” at Cornell—T. Colin Campbell.  That was the headline in the Cornell Progressive on March 8, 2012 We may no longer have academic freedom at Cornell or ANY of our schools of nutrition, but the first amendment is alive and well. And it was recently exercised by … Continue reading → or choose one of my earlier blogposts below:

But even without academic freedom, we all still have the freedom to choose what we wish to eat and how we wish to take care of our own health. For more information about the foundation’s plant-based nutrition course, scroll to the link at the bottom of this post.
