My case for why we need all the leadership we can get

When 51% of the popular vote is called a DECISIVE victory…It means that Americans are equally split on just about everything.

The fact is that no matter who you are—or how charming or righteous you might be; it’s darn near impossible to get much over 50% of the people to support you. President Obama won the popular vote 51% to 48% over Mitt Romney. The pundits called it a decisive victory; Mitt Romney called it a devastating defeat. I call it a fact of life in today’s world.

It is impossible to get everyone to like you, to trust you or to listen to your advice. In fact, it’s nearly impossible to earn support from over 60% of almost any population. And that is why we need to actively solicit the support of every powerful leader we can find who embraces the global adoption of a whole foods, plant-based diet.

Last week, I posted a blog about General David Petraeus; inviting him to join our 4Leaf Army—if he were willing to embrace the plant-based lifestyle to help us promote the longterm sustainability of the human race. A number of my readers reported that they lost respect for me because I was willing to ask someone of his suspect character to join the team. This was my response:

Thank you everyone for your comments. I felt that I should post a general response as I may not have explained my position very well.

As you may know, many of our nation’s greatest leaders have committed a few sins here and there. We’re human and we make mistakes; I know that I have. As far as General Petraeus is concerned, this affair may very well  be one of only a very few serious mistakes he has made in his life. No one really knows—except him. Meanwhile, he has distinguished himself throughout his career and has played a big role in helping to make America safe for all of us.

Likewise, most people today think that Bill Clinton was a great president and that he did some great things for our country. Did he make a few mistakes? Yes. Would I like to have Bill Clinton on our team? Absolutely!

Personally, it’s really not for me to judge the mistakes of anyone else, including many of our greatest leaders; I just care about waking up the world to what the human race is doing to the planet and her ability to sustain life as we know it. I sincerely believe that changing what we eat is the most powerful step that we can take toward doing that. And we don’t need just one leader, we need as many as we can get. The politicians can’t get it done for many reasons and we know that the food or medical industries are not going to lead the change.

Bill Clinton went vegan in 2010 and it probably saved his life. He remains our most prominent spokesman for eating plant-based.

It is a fact that world-famous people like Bill Clinton, Lance Armstrong, Tiger Woods, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and David Petraeus can still influence millions, if not billions of people. The bottom line is we need all the well-known leaders we can get. And there are a lot more leaders who have sinned than there are those who have always been righteous.

So yes, if David Petraeus embraced the whole foods, plant-based, diet-style to help promote health and to help ensure the longterm sustainability of the human race—then I would love to have in on our team. Guys like him and Clinton can reach hundreds of  millions of people, whereas I can only reach a few thousand. I will end with this passage from the Holy Bible:

According to the Gospel of John, the Pharisees, in an attempt to discredit Jesus, brought a woman charged with adultery before him. Then they reminded Jesus that adultery was punishable by stoning under Mosaic Law and challenged him to judge the woman so that they might then accuse him of disobeying the law. Jesus thought for a moment and then replied, “He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone at her.” The people crowded around him were so touched by their own consciences that they departed.

Thank you for your continued interest and support and for doing your part to promote the plant-based lifestyle—for our health, for our families, for our planet and for the longterm sustainability of the human race. Sincerely, Jim Hicks

Millions of people in China and India are adopting the typical western diet every year.

The Bottom Line. 95% of Americans eat some form of the typical western diet—with meat, dairy and eggs several times a day. And although more are joining our plant-based ranks every year, there are probably ten times more people in places like China and India that are moving in the other direction.

We are NOT winning the war when it comes to moving the world to a health-promoting, planet-saving, compassionate way of eating. And the reason is a lack of leadership. Just like everyone doesn’t respect Barack Obama or Mitt Romney, they both had millions of people who voted for them and they both have the ability to influence the behavior of those millions of supporters.

The same goes for Bill Clinton, Lance Armstrong, Tiger Woods, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and David Petraeus. While no more than half the population respects any one of them, between the five of them, there are over a billion people out there who do. If this group of five “tainted” individuals could influence half of that group (500 million people) to help get our world moving back into harmony with nature—I guarantee you that all of our great-grandchildren would be eternally grateful. —My 653rd consecutive daily blog—

Diabetes. Oklahoma rate up 227% in just fifteen years

Now at 9.8% of the population, they still trail several southern states.

Those were the good old days in Oklahoma; not so now with record levels of obesity and diabetes.

That compares to an overall national increase of 82% from 1995 to 2010. The rate of type 2 diabetes rose in all fifty states and Puerto Rico. (See links below) From the articles; a few more compelling pieces of information:

Prevalence increased in all states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, with the median up from 4.5% to 8.2%.  Diabetes rates were highest in the South and in Appalachia, where Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia all had 2010 rates above 10%.  Rates also exceeded 10% in Puerto Rico.

The states with the lowest prevalence of diabetes, between 6.0% and 6.9%, were Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Vermont and Wyoming.  In California, 8.6% of the people had the disease — a 38% increase over 1995.

This chart from the CDC is incredible; clearly showing the dramatic rise of obesity in all age groups for the last 30 years.

The articles below also reported some of the standard comments from the medical community. They always seem to talk about general lifestyle habits, not much exercise and easy access to high-calorie, less expensive foods.

But they never mention the 95% success rate that many enlightened physicians have reported in totally reversing the disease. Our government and our mainstream medical community NEVER tell the public exactly what they must to do prevent or reverse their disease. And that is just a crying shame.

A side visit to the American Diabetes Association website revealed the following typical advice for healthy eating. As long as they all continue to include any form of meat and dairy in the healthy food choices, no real progress is going to be seen. From ADA website with the title of:

“Making Healthy Food Choices”

  1. Eat lots of vegetables and fruits. Try picking from the rainbow of colors available to maximize variety.
  2. Eat non-starchy vegetables such as spinach, carrots, broccoli or green beans with meals.
  3. Choose whole grain foods over processed grain products. Try brown rice with your stir fry or whole wheat spaghetti with your favorite pasta sauce.
  4. Include dried beans (like kidney or pinto beans) and lentils into your meals.
  5. Include fish in your meals 2-3 times a week.
  6. Choose lean meats like cuts of beef and pork that end in “loin” such as pork loin and sirloin. Remove the skin from chicken and turkey.
  7. Choose non-fat dairy such as skim milk, non-fat yogurt and non-fat cheese.
  8. Choose water and calorie-free “diet” drinks instead of regular soda, fruit punch, sweet tea and other sugar-sweetened drinks.
  9. Choose liquid oils for cooking instead of solid fats that can be high in saturated and trans fats. Remember that fats are high in calories. If you’re trying to lose weight, watch your portion sizes of added fats.
  10. Cut back on high calorie snack foods and desserts like chips, cookies, cakes, and full-fat ice cream.
  11. Eating too much of even healthful foods can lead to weight gain. Watch your portion sizes.

The Bottom Line. None of the “disease specific” websites EVER advise the public that if they eat the “right” foods (whole plants) that they can eat as much as they want, will enjoy effortless weight-loss and will have a 95% chance of preventing or reversing type 2 diabetes.

Then, if they teach their children the “right way to eat,” they will minimize their family’s future chances of having diabetes, heart disease, cancer and all other chronic diseases that are driven primarily by our food choices. —My 652nd consecutive daily blog—

GERD, NERD & other food-driven ailments that baffle doctors

Meanwhile, Pepsi has a new fat-blocking soda with fiber.

While watching portions of CBS This Morning and The Late Show (Letterman), two news stories caught my attention. One was about untreatable heartburn and the other about a new fat-blocking soda with fiber.

Both reminded me of the same point—our entire system of healthcare and food producers simply have no clue when it comes to our health.   Once again, I am reminded of the sage words of that great American philosopher:

“People are fed by the food industry, which pays no attention to health, and are treated by the health industry, which pays no attention to food.” — Wendell Berry

You may have heard of GERD, that’s the kind of acid-reflux that we hear the most about, but now our scientists have discovered a different kind of heartburn that is not responding so well to the standard drug treatments. From a recent WSJ article (See link below):

New research suggests that in many people, heartburn may be caused by something other than acid reflux. But gastroenterologists are often stumped as to what it is and how to treat it.

Up to one-half of GERD patients don’t get complete relief from even the strongest acid-reducing medications, called proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs), and most don’t have any evidence of acid erosion when doctors examine their esophagus with an endoscope. Gastroenterologists have dubbed this condition non-erosive reflux diseases, or NERD.

In a lengthy article that contained well over 1,000 words, there was almost zero information regarding the fact that our bad food choices are the culprit in the vast majority of our health issues. Whether those health issues are life-threatening diseases or some form of indigestion like GERD or NERD. And even when they mention food, they NEVER suggest that we adopt the natural diet for our species permanently. Instead, they give this lame advice:

There is surprisingly little research on whether certain foods may cause heartburn. “Why not try diet first instead of drugs?” asks Jan Patenaude, director of medical nutrition at Oxford Biomedical Technologies, Inc. The South Florida lab company tests patients’ blood to see if it forms an inflammatory reaction to any of hundreds of foods. Patients then stop eating any suspect food, then gradually add them back to see if their heartburn returns.

It gets worse. While doctors in America are perplexed about the cause and treatment of heartburn, the nutritional geniuses at Pepsico have launched a new soda in Japan. As reported by ABC:

Dubbed the “Pepsi Special,” the soft drink set to go on sale Tuesday contains dextrin, a fiber that distributor Suntory claims helps reduce fat levels in the body.

Eager to appeal to young, health-conscious men, Pepsi has put out a comical ad on its website showing a businessman trying to chose between a woman dressed in a pizza costume and another in a burger outfit. The message – you don’t have to give up either, if you drink the Pepsi Special.

This is Pepsi’s first venture into the healthy cola market. Rival Kirin, better known for its beer, released its own sugar-free, dextrin soda this summer: the “Mets” cola.

Wendell Berry

The Bottom Line. These are two excellent examples of just how dysfunctional our entire system of food and healthcare has become. It’s laughable and sad at the same time—and we need some serious leadership to shake some sense into the collective brains of the American public.

Stories like this should shock a few people into realizing that Wendell Berry was absolutely right. Our food and healthcare industries are only concerned about money and if we really want to be healthy, we can’t heed the advice of either. That’s because not a single person in those two industries has a financial incentive for us to be healthy.

So my “blinding flash of the obvious” message for you today is that your only option is to take charge of your own health. Learn how to do that in the 4-part kit following these two absurd articles. —My 651st consecutive daily blog—
