Ice Buckets, E-Cigs, & the lack of focus on the “vital few”

Perennial lack of clarity and the never-ending bombardment of confusion

That’s my definition of the NEWS and just about every other form of human activity. And that’s why we never solve our most serious problems, because all of our attention is focused elsewhere.

Remembering Pareto. In college, I studied Industrial Engineering and the most powerful thing that I learned was this:

When examining ANY system or problem, the identification of the “vital few” is of paramount importance. For there is always a “vital few” twenty percent of the items that will account for a disproportionately large portion of the total. And that is where you must focus your attention. — The J. Morris Hicks definition of Pareto’s Law, better known as the 80-20 rule.

J. Morris Hicks, promoting health, hope and harmony on planet Earth.

“The single most important thing we do is deciding what to eat.” — J. Morris Hicks

So what are the vital few when it comes to human health, environmental health and sustainability? Conveniently, for all concerned, the vital few in this case is ONE—what we choose to eat. And it drives practically everything:

  1. It determines how the entire planet is used—most of its land and water.
  2. It is the single most important thing when it comes to human health.
  3. It is the primary driver of every environmental problem that we have today.
  4. “Getting it right” is crucial to the sustainability of our ecosystem, our civilization and the longterm survival of our species.

“We’re eating the wrong food!” That was my conclusion in 2003 after researching the optimal diet for humans for six months. So why are our mainstream scientists, physicians, government officials, medical schools and schools of nutrition not teaching every human the complete truth about the single most important thing that we do? The short answer is money. There is more money to be made by keeping the public confused and sick. Two recent examples:

The Ice Bucket Challenge. The only way you would not know about this phenomenon is if you were in a coma for the past few weeks. God bless them for raising awareness and funding for this worthy cause—but let’s take a look as some facts and put things in perspective.

According to the ALS website, some 30,000 Americans have ALS. That is less than 1/100th of one percent of our population. Further, 93% of those who have it are caucasian. So that means that more than 99.99% of the US population do NOT have it and almost ZERO African Americans have it.

Laura dumps ice on W

Laura dumps ice on W

I don’t mean to criticize anyone’s favorite cause, including ALS. However, I would prefer to channel MY charitable dollars AND my time to working on issues that affect EVERY single human—including the 30,000 in the USA who have ALS.

What affects ALL humans? I’m talking about sustainability of our ecosystem, and ultimately, our future as a species. We simply must learn to live in harmony with nature—and that will be impossible as long as we continue to consume lots of meat, dairy, eggs & fish. We’ll also NEVER eliminate chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease and diabetes until we start eating the natural diet for our species.

One thing I like about the Ice Bucket Challenge is that it illustrates how quickly information can be spread around the world. I would just like to see us focus most of our energy on saving the entire human race instead of just 1/100th of one percent of the American population. — J. Morris Hicks

e-cigaretteWhat do we know about e-cigarettes? Not much. That’s what a medical doctor said on the CBS morning show today. “We don’t yet know enough about the effects of E-cigarettes on the user and those near the user.” But far more importantly…

We (our mainstream experts) also don’t know enough about the longterm effects of eating meat, dairy, eggs and/or fish three meals a day. Our “experts” are clueless regarding how that diet-style affects our health, our ecosystem and our longterm survival as a species

The Bottom Line. The innocent public throughout the world deserve to hear the complete truth about what we must do to preserve our ecosystem and our civilization for those who follow us.

But NONE of our mainstream leaders are telling us!

Ending on a quote from General Patton. “Compared to war, all other forms of human endeavor shrink to insignificance.” Ditto for sustainability. — J. Morris Hicks

Global depletion accelerates as “Adaptation” yields profits

Some get filthy rich while hastening the demise of civilization.

For years the debate has been about whether or not climate change exists and whether not it is being caused by human activity. But now, we see the debate shifting from how to lessen, stop or reverse climate change (mitigation) to how can we save ourselves while making a lot of money off climate change?

A reviewer on Amazon writes: "Therefore our reaction is going to be shaped bottom-up by people who are thinking of personal profit rather than the global good."

A reviewer on Amazon writes: “Therefore our reaction is going to be shaped bottom-up by people who are thinking of personal profit rather than the global good.”

An article by Vox writer Brad Plumer caught my attention yesterday, Meet the companies that are trying to profit from global warming. In the article (see link below), Mr. Plumer interviews McKenzie Funk, the author of Windfall: The Booming Business of Global Warming. The article opens by citing a list of money making examples put forth by Mr. Funk in his book. Among them:

  1. Melting ice in Greenland opens the door for more mining, more wealth and possible independence from Denmark.
  2. Dutch engineers who’ve grown up under water are selling the idea of “floating cities” for regions of the world that might soon be underwater.
  3. The land-grab is underway as countries and investors rush to buy up farmland to feed their own population in the future.
  4. Using desalination techniques to build a new generation of snowmakers for ski resorts.

Here’s one passage that I found interesting about making money off the land and water crises. The book’s author, Mr. Funk, states:

Yeah, you see big investment banks, big hedge funds — everyone is in on the land rush. Big American banks like Goldman Sachs, Gulf state governments, Chinese state-owned corporations. They’re buying up land in Brazil, Cambodia, Laos, eastern Russia, Ukraine, in addition to the places in Africa that everyone talks about.

And it’s absolutely connected to water. The thing about water is that you can’t move it around in ships very easily. The idea that you’re going to put freshwater from Alaska into a tanker and take it to India or California — the numbers just don’t work. But you can ship food. So essentially buying up farmland abroad is a way for companies and countries to trade virtual water by moving food around the globe.

While reading, I was struck by the fact that none of these ideas do a damn thing to protect the environment. Just the opposite; they accelerate the process of global depletion while enabling a few wealthy investors to get more wealthy. Instead of sleepwalking off a cliff; it’s now as if we’re all racing toward that cliff, where all will eventually perish.

From beginning to end, their thriving civilization lasted about 1,000 years. Then it collapsed after they used up too much of their finite resources.

From beginning to end, their thriving civilization lasted about 1,000 years, then collapsed after finite resources were depleted.

Like the humans who settled lush and tropical Easter Island and built a flourishing economy that supported ten or fifteen thousand people. They made a very nice life for themselves for about a thousand years, but were using up finite resources at a much faster rate than nature could replace them.

By the time the Dutch found them on Easter Sunday in 1722, their civilization had collapsed and the few remaining Rapa Nui had resorted to cannibalism to survive.

The same thing is happening to us now. In the never ending race to maximize the consumption of more STUFF, we’re using up our land, our water, our trees, our minerals—and in the process, we’ve caused our climate to change and the rate of species extinction to surge to over 1,000 times its normal rate.

Sadly, this powerful book of truth has not been read by nearly enough people.

Sadly, this powerful book of truth has not been read by nearly enough people.

And it gets worse every day. As Stephen Emmott points out so clearly in TEN BILLION, one of our biggest problems is how we’re going to feed ourselves in the future. As our population surges and the average person eats more food, we’ll need to produce more food in the next forty years than ALL food that has been produced for the last 10,000 years—combined.

And the only way we can produce that much food is to totally destroy the remaining rainforest and/or to grow food on land in Greenland or Siberia that was once frozen. Although both of those will push us ever more rapidly toward that cliff, our insatiable greed has already started moving us in that direction.

So who or what do we blame for this mess? And how do we fix it? Over the past year, I have written and spoken frequently about the four major problems we must address:

  1. Overpopulation. Still adding almost one million every four days.
  2. Overconsumption. We eventually need a new economic model, one whose primary function is to protect our HOME, Mother Earth.
  3. Dependence on fossil fuels. We’ve made no real progress on this one, as we continue to consume MORE fossil fuels every year.
  4. Eating the wrong food. The leading cause of most of our environmental crises; yet not mentioned by the large environmental groups—because it would hurt their fundraising. Even those we trust are driven more by money than by truly saving the ecosystem that sustains us. (See Cowspiracy.com)

The bad news is that the first three problems will require decades, if not centuries to bring under control. Eventually, we must deal with them, but I have concluded that the ONLY way that will happen is by taking URGENT action NOW with #4—our food choices; thereby buying us the time we need to address all four of these problems.

It all boils down to harmony---all of the compelling reasons for plant-based eating.

It all boils down to harmony—we must quickly learn to live in harmony with nature.

The Bottom Line. With the conversation already shifting from “mitigation” to “adaptation” and personal gains from climate change, it will be even more difficult to stop that money-making juggernaut.

Our ONLY chance is to change what we eat. The good news is that, compared to the first three, that task can be done relatively quickly, easily and inexpensively. But we need powerful leadership who will stand up to the special interests and begin telling people everywhere the complete truth about our food choices—for our health, for our ecosystem and for the longterm survival of our species.

Grassroots change? While grassroots change is great, it’s simply a case of too little, too late this time. We urgently need a MASSIVE, privately-funded, global awareness campaign with a definite plan for repeatedly reaching the most affluent two billion people in the world—those who are eating most of the animal-based foods. That campaign may cost 100 billion dollars or more, but so what?

What good is a pile of money if there is no food, no water and no civilization? Is making money really more important than the livelihood of your grandchildren? — J. Morris Hicks

Relentless Tenacity. Except for occasional bouts of depression

The passing of Robin Williams—a time to talk openly about depression

Robin Williams

Robin Williams

Last week, a famous scientist and author that I greatly respect and admire—sent me this note of encouragement from London.

Hi Jim, Your tenacity on this lot is admirable, I have to say.  Sadly, you are very definitely in a minority.  But keep at it! Best, Stephen

Relentless and tenacity are two of my favorite descriptors when it comes to describing some aspects of leadership—although both words have less than pleasant meanings for some. Let’s see what Webster has to say:

Relentless. Oppressively constant; incessant, nonstop, never-ending.

Tenacity. The quality or fact of being able to grip something firmly. Persistence, determination, perseverance, doggedness, strength of purpose.

Speaking of “grasping something firmly,” yesterday, I decided it was time to update my professional bio, which perhaps more appropriately should be entitled “Finding my passion in life.” In a nutshell, it’s the story of how I transitioned from industrial engineer to business executive to corporate headhunter to an activist, who has recently gripped my new mission firmly. You can read that one-page story online by clicking here.

depressionWhat about depression? From time to time, readers ask me how I can do what I do day after day—and not become depressed. Well, occasionally I do get depressed—and Wednesday was one of those times.

But the good news is that I learned how to “deal with” depression about twenty-five years ago. I learned a simple technique from a mental health professional and, thankfully, never had to return for another visit. Fortunately, I found the rare therapist who didn’t automatically prescribe medication for everything. Here’s the gist of what I learned from him and what I have practiced over the years. It may not work for everyone, but it has worked for me. Here’s what I do:

  1. Remind myself that it’s not all negative; depression can have healing powers.
  2. Don’t try to do too much while depressed. Let those healing powers do their thing. My father was a sales professional and knew that if he was depressed, that he should just stay at home until he felt better.
  3. Remind myself that this acute feeling of depression is temporary and that I will come back even stronger.
  4. Make a list of goals and action steps for achieving those goals.
  5. Start working on that list in earnest.
J. Morris Hicks, promoting health, hope and harmony on planet Earth.

While depressed on Wednesday, I reminded myself of all of the above. Then I woke up yesterday, made a list of things I wanted to accomplish and created a brand new one-pager describing my #1 priority. Armed with that new one-pager, I now feel better equipped to “tell my story” as I go about recruiting that one powerful leader the world so desperately needs. I ended that one-page story with this:

Because of the severity of the emergency we face, we don’t have time for the normal process of grassroots change to happen. That’s why my #1 PRIORITY is recruiting that one powerful leader who can make it happen NOW. How do I describe that person?

I am searching for a proven leader with integrity, courage and a globally-respected name. After becoming fully enlightened regarding the ONLY viable solution to the emergency we face, he/she will know what to do. And I will be there to help!

The Bottom Line. I know that what I am trying to do is important. Perhaps more important than ANYTHING else in the history of humanity. I also know that it is a VERY difficult task. Further, I know that there is a reasonable chance that I will fail. Many tell me frequently that I will most certainly fail.

But then I remind myself of something my mother told me many times when I was just a boy.

God gave you a brain and he expects you to use it. You were put here to do something important and I know that you will. I always knew that you would be successful because you were born on Success Road. — Agnes Ware Stanfield Hicks (2200 Success Road, Memphis, TN, is on my birth certificate)

Dedicated to my son and co-author, Jason Stanfield Hicks

One more reason I don’t fear failure. Six grandchildren. I do care what they think about me after I’m gone and I don’t want to let them down. See first blog listed below.
