“McDougall Moments” — Video series by Dr. John McDougall

Dr. John McDougall. Check out his website at drmcdougall.com

Today’s post is is an introduction to the new “McDougall Moment” series, featuring concise two-minute videos on a wide range of diet and health-related subjects by Dr. John McDougall (featured prominently in our book). As I have done with some of Dr. Michael Greger’s videos, I have begun featuring the McDougall Moments in some of my blogs. Here are three that I went back and updated:

Cost of Plant-based eating. I have updated this earlier blog post with a fairly recent McMoment. Take a look: The Dollars and “Sense” of Plant-Based Eating

Vitamin Supplements. While all of the medical doctors referenced in our book agree on the health benefits of a whole foods, plant-based diet, they don’t all agree about vitamins. Take a look at this updated blogpost that now includes a McMoment on the topic of Vitamin D. Vitamins…a 27 billion dollar folly?

Constipation. Almost everyone in the Western world experiences constipation at one time in their lives — unless they are lucky enough to have parents who have discovered the magic of a whole foods, plant-based diet. Thinking constipation was normal as a boy, I now realize that it was not. Just added a McMoment to: Reading material in the bathroom…a red flag.

For your convenience, here are links directly to McDougall Moments and to Dr. Greger’s NutritionFacts website. While there, you can scroll through many helpful videos that you can share with your friends and family.

Ending the madness — Staph bacteria commonplace in meat

Staph likely in three billion food animals per year — in the USA (47%)

Santa delivers dead bird on a plate -- complete with cholesterol and saturated fat -- along with a 77% chance of a little staph bacteria as a bonus.

Now that Thanksgiving is behind us and before you rush out to buy your Christmas turkey, you may wish to review this informative video (3 minutes) by Dr. Michael Greger. He reports on a study conducted in May of 2011 regarding the frequency of staph bacteria in various kinds of meat in the USA.

While none of our meats are “staph free,” guess which one scored the worst? Turkey — with an incredible score of 77%. Yes, if you’re planning to eat turkey this Christmas, you have almost eight chances in ten of getting one containing staph bacteria.

How about a definition of staph? a bacterium of a genus that includes many pathogenic kinds that cause pus formation, esp. in the skin and mucous membranes.

For more of Dr. Greger’s superior reporting, visit his website at nutritionfacts.org.

The thrill of making a difference; book feedback from a reader.

Mini Book Review and Sunday Movies.

Now that our book has been out for two months, we’re beginning to get a lot of great feedback. And, it really feels good to be making a difference in people’s lives. Just this week, I received this email from Victoria, a young woman who had never even heard about our daily blog. This is one of the most gratifying messages that I have ever received:

Described recently by a meat-eating friend: "Simple, not too long, easy to read and compelling without being full of zealotry. It has influenced me to make some changes in my eating habits.

Hello Mr Hicks. My Name is Victoria. I just finished reading your book and I’m truly impressed by how much it got to me… all of it. I’m 29 years old and at 17, I used to weigh 207 lb (at my biggest). I am at 135 lb now, so obviously I was trying to eat healthy and work out for quite a while. But from what I’m learning lately; it was mostly just dieting, cutting out products from my eating routine, as opposed to healthy eating.

I reached my goal of losing weight and I don’t fluctuate but started craving more profound change than just being thin. So I started reading books about healthy eating. And I must have read about a dozen of them before I got to your book.

On the first chapter I quit drinking coffee… and I am unbelievably addicted to coffee… and I stopped eating meat right away. Basically I thought I was going to take it step by step… but the more I read your book, the more I realized that I don’t want to put that piece of salmon in my mouth anymore.

All I want to say (it certainly was for me) is that the way you wrote the book, it switched me to the goal of being vegan in a couple days of reading “Healthy Eating – Healthy World.” I read it everywhere now (I have it on my iBooks, so it is always with me). I even re-read a few chapters to understand it more.

You see, not a lot of people can put it in perspective so simply that you have no arguments against it. I am the person who just two weeks ago said to my friend that anyone who is vegan is absolutely crazy!! And I can’t understand why anyone would do that to themselves. Honestly, I don’t know how to tell her now — that I am adopting a vegan diet; ha ha.

But your book changed everything for me and I just wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for this. I wish all the best to you and your family. Best regards, Victoria

****************

Thank you Victoria, for taking the time to write your lovely note — it really made our day. Sincerely from J. Morris Hicks and son, Jason.

Sunday Movies. Now, once again, for your Sunday viewing pleasure; I am providing two very important movies. Just in case you haven’t seem them yet, get yourself some popcorn (or celery), and watch these great world-changing documentaries with your family (free). They are about 1.5 hours each and are likely to leave you feeling differently about the role of the human race on our precious planet.

An exceptionally well-done 2009 movie produced in France; has been seen by millions around the world, but not nearly enough Americans. Features aerial footage in 54 countries.

HOME — a great 2009 film; a powerful eye-opener

“Earthlings” — A documentary that we all NEED to see
