Blogging this week from the collegiate trail

University of Kentucky today and Holy Cross on Wednesday

In a recent interview, I was asked this question by Gretchen Tseng of ChicVegan: In your wildest dreams, what will your life and the world look like in 5 years?

While the meat & dairy-laden Western diet will still be prevalent, many millions of people will have learned more about the health, environmental and other benefits of plant-based eating. Further, as the cost of energy and food continues to rise; more and more people will be choosing the cheaper, healthier and greener option of eating more plants.

As for me in 2017, I would like to be speaking on college campuses around the world at least ten times a month—sharing our message with the young people who will be the leaders of the “great food revolution of the 21st century.” Ever optimistic, J. Morris Hicks.

Optimistic? Why am I optimistic and why do I want to focus much of my effort on the young people? It’s because I have observed that bright young people get the message in our book very quickly and they usually begin to make positive changes in their diets  immediately. In our book, we reported that 18% of all college students in the USA describe themselves as vegetarian—this compares to a puny 3.2% of the nation as a whole. So, why is that?

It’s because the word is getting out there about the many compelling reasons for adopting a whole foods, plant-based diet. And the college kids are listening and they’re taking action. Two recent examples:

Dr. Shawn Lankton, my nephew and fellow 4Leaf health enthusiast

My nephew Shawn (27). While studying for his PhD at Georgia Tech six years ago, Shawn read Joel Fuhrman’s Eat to Live that I gave him—and stopped eating ALL animal products a few weeks later. Over the next few months, he lost twenty pounds that he didn’t even know he needed to lose. He has been eating at 4Leaf ever since and is now traveling the world out of New York, working with one of the most prominent consulting firms in the world.

My youngest friend in Stonington, Tim (29). Last summer, I shared a few sailing trips with Tim (a new member of our yacht club) and while sailing, we chatted about food and many other things. Even before reading our book, he then started trying some of the ideas that I shared with him. He now has our book on his iPhone (via iBooks), has lost 25 pounds (without trying), is eating 4Leaf for many of his meals and is still making improvements in his diet.

He has joined our 4Leaf Potluck Dinner Club in Stonington and is trying to learn how to cook. A scientist with Pfizer, he excitedly talks about the implications of the message in our book on the medical and pharmaceutical industry. He agrees that making drugs for food-borne illnesses is not a very gratifying career and he looks forward to being a part of the inevitable industry transformation to promoting health vs. just treating symptoms.

My lecture this evening at the University of Kentucky is entitled:

The “Big Picture”—How our food choices affect the promotion of health, hope and harmony on planet Earth

I will begin with a quote by a famous Kentuckian and UK graduate, Wendell Berry:

People are fed by the food industry, which pays no attention to health….and are treated by the health industry which pays no attention to food.

Toward the end of the lecture, which features much about the environmental damage caused by our rich Western diet, I include another thoughtful quote by Mr. Berry:

“Whether we and our politicians know it or not, Nature is party to all our deals and decisions…and she has more votes, a longer memory, and a sterner sense of justice than we do.”

Why should we be eating mostly plants? The “big picture” in 4 minutes.

Introducing the new “Sunday Learning Series”

Featuring Scientific Integrity and Two Soul-Searching Movies

Since beginning this daily blog over a year ago, Dr. T. Colin Campbell has been mentioned more than any other single person. That’s because he is the world’s leading authority on plant-based nutrition. With a mission of delivering “scientific integrity for optimal health,” his work features a unique blend of credibility, legitimacy and authenticity. For all these reasons, our special Sunday Learning Series is dedicated to his work and to his foundation:

Plant-Based Nutrition Course. As you may know, this great organization (along with eCornell) provides the only plant-based nutrition course in the world that features continuing education credits for MD’s, RD’s, and other health professionals. I have taken that course myself, it has made a huge difference in my life and I enthusiastically recommend it to others. You can learn more about it and even sample one of the lectures by visiting the Plant-Based Nutrition Course on the TCC Foundation website.

Videos and Articles. In addition to the plant-based nutrition course, Dr. Campbell’s website offers a wealth of scientific integrity in the form of videos and articles. For a list of articles by category, visit this page. For example, the first category is Transitioning to a Plant-Based Diet and features about twenty articles by Dr. Campbell and other experts. There is also a search function whereby you can search almost any nutritional topic.

Now, for your Sunday afternoon viewing pleasure. Gather your family, get some popcorn (or celery) and take a little time to learn about our responsibilities as humans when it comes to the future of this planet. The message in these movies is all about the tagline of our Harmony Project—promoting health, hope and harmony on planet Earth.

Two great movies that we all must see.

An exceptionally well-done 2009 movie produced in France; it features aerial footage in 54 countries.

HOME, debuted in 2009 but still hasn’t been seen by nearly enough people. Narrated by Glenn Close, this marvelous film describes how life evolved on planet Earth 4 billion years ago and how everything is connected—-land, water, air, trees, creatures and humankind.

As Glenn describes how humankind has disrupted the fragile harmony of Nature in just the past fifty years, the powerful message will leave you feeling differently about the role of the human race on our precious planet. Don’t have 90 minutes to spare right now? Then watch this two-minute trailer;  then make some time real soon to watch the full 90-minute movie. You’ll be glad you did.

Next is Earthlings, narrated by Joaquin Phoenix. Another great movie, it helps us understand how we’re just one of millions of species on this planet. Yet we have the power to affect the livelihood of all of the others. This is a movie you should watch with your children. For a preview, take a look at the 3-minute trailer below:

Nature—Animals—Humankind. Get the connection? In the full 95-minute movie below, Joaquin covers the “three stages of truth.”

Ridicule—Violent Opposition—Acceptance

Early detection of prostate and breast cancer…

And how it can ruin your life.

That’s the headline of an email that I received from Dr. John McDougall recently. He’s referring to how our money-driven medical industry has successfully convinced the majority of Americans that prevention means early detection, and we accomplish that by screening every single person—repeatedly.

A near-opitmal plant-based diet is the most powerful cancer-prevention methodology known to humankind.

But repeated screenings and early detection are not prevention. They are the primary vehicles for recruiting cancer treatment customers. Then comes the anguish, the pain and the suffering as the patient undergoes costly treatment that is all directed at the symptoms—none of it addresses the causal factors.

The message from Dr. McDougall was all about his February Advanced Study Weekend which is already sold out. He writes:

“Dr. H. Gilbert Welch, MD, the world’s expert on the “over-diagnosis of cancer,” has published within the past year life-saving articles in the Archives of Internal Medicine and the New England Journal Of Medicine that could save you and your spouse from unnecessary painful tests and debilitating treatments.” (See links below my signature)

Dr. John McDougall, one of the five MD’s featured in our book, the five who provided the “common ground” foundation for our 4-Leaf Program

Like colonoscopies to screen for colon cancer, everything is based on the risk of developing the disease and dying from it. In an earlier post (see below) about Dr. Oz, I talked about the $50 billion business of screening, just for colon cancer—a disease that carries a 7% likelihood of causing your death.

Oz shares colon story; “cancer screening $$ business” gets bigger

But what if that risk was lowered to one half of one percent? Do you think we’d still have a $50 billion business to screen for it. Would you go repeatedly for screenings if the risk of dying from the disease was 1/2 of one percent, 1 person out of 200? I wouldn’t and I don’t.

As a matter of fact, I stopped having any screenings about nine years ago when I first discovered the power of plant-based nutrition. And after  almost a decade of eating a near optimal diet, I have concluded that my risk of cancer is not worth taking the risk of being harmed during a screening procedure or a treatment regimen. Dr. Mcdougall seems to agree.

Here’s what he has to say about cancer and diet.

The bottom line. Screening is not prevention. Eating a whole foods, plant-based diet is the single most powerful method that we have for prevention of all chronic diseases.

Yet, we don’t teach much about that method in medical schools and there is no money to be made by everyone getting healthy. For a ton of information on this topic and many others, visit Dr. McDougall’s site at http://www.drmcdougall.com. Here are a few other of my posts on the topic of cancer:

Screening for cancer…a very big business
