Mark Twain: Telling it like it is on America’s birthday

His words prompting me to challenge Americans to make things right.

Although he has been dead for over 100 years, Mark Twain will be with us forever. And thank goodness for that. For it was he who never feared of consequences of speaking the truth as he saw it—and it is well-documented that he did so often.

Mark Twain — a famous American widely known for “telling it like it is.”

Although often criticized regarding his forthright comments about us human beings, I think he hit the nail on the head. Although we think that we’re smarter than all of the other millions of species of fellow Earthlings, we must remember that we’re the only species in the history of the planet who has not lived in harmony with the nature.

In fact, in just the past fifty years, we have inflicted more damage on the fragile harmony of nature than all previous generations of humans combined for the last 200,000 years.

Many of us go merrily along recklessly plundering and running roughshod across the planet, believing all the while that we’re right—and that God Almighty is on our side. Here’s what Mark Twain had to say about that:

“Man is a religious animal. He is the only religious animal. He is the only animal that has the ‘True Religion’ – several of them! He is the only animal that loves his neighbour as himself but cuts his throat if his theology isn’t straight. He has made a graveyard of the globe in trying his honest best to smooth his brother’s path to happiness and heaven.

The animals have no religion. And we are told that they are going to be left out in the Hereafter. I wonder why? It seems questionable taste……Of all the animals, man is the only one that is cruel. He is the only one that inflicts pain for the pleasure of doing it. It is just like man’s vanity and impertinence to call an animal dumb because it is dumb to his dull perceptions.

The fact that man knows right from wrong proves his intellectual superiority to the other creatures. The fact that he can do wrong proves his moral inferiority to any creature that cannot. I am not interested to know whether it is profitable to the human race or not. The pain it inflicts upon unconsenting animals is the basis and sufficient justification of my enmity towards it without looking further. In studying the traits and dispositions of the so-called lower animals, and contrasting them with man’s, I find the result humiliating to me.” Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) Author (1835 – 1910)

On a brighter note. I want to tell you about my special day in New York City on the 4th of July. It was my distinct pleasure to join eight highly successful women for a special luncheon at a fine restaurant in Battery Park overlooking the Statue of Liberty. Being the only man in the group made the event even more memorable. Joining us in the same restaurant was a table of 25 American veterans, including many from World War II.

After singing, Karen poses for a photo with a veteran of the Normandy invasion.

It was my good fortune to snap this photo of one of those vets, alongside my new friend Karen, who was with our group. Following our luncheon, Karen stood up and announced that she had a gift for us. An Australian now living in New York, she then proceeded to sing our nation’s Star Spangled Banner. Of course, we all rose and did our best to sing along with her.

She then went out on the terrace  where the 25 veterans were seated around a long table. Once again, she sang the Star Spangled Banner for them, hit every note perfectly and thanked all of those brave men for their service—to our nation and to the world. They were ecstatic—and will never forget the experience. (more about Karen later)

Back to the wisdom of Mark Twain. Sometimes, I refer to this quote during my public speaking engagements. Again, telling it like it is, Twain makes it clear that up until now, humankind has not really served any useful purpose. On the other hand, we have collectively done our best to destroy ourselves, our planet, and all of our fellow Earthlings with it.

Maybe now is the time for us to come together and correct the harmful ways of our past—by bringing ourselves back into harmony with the world in which we live.

Twain had arrived at the not unreasonable but never popular conclusion that mankind “was not made for any useful purpose, for the reason that he hasn’t served any; that he was most likely not even made intentionally; and that his working his way up out of the oyster bed to his present position was probably a matter of surprise and regret to the creator.”

And from Einstein. “Our task must be to free ourselves…by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty” Albert Einstein (1879 – 1955) Physicist, Author, Nobel Laureate in Physics 1921

4Leaf eating the patriotic way—on the 4th of July

The Harmony Challenge for my fellow Americans. The single most powerful move that we humans can make to restore harmony with nature is to move aggressively back to the natural diet for our species—one consisting primarily of whole, plant-based foods. You see that diet-style requires 90% less water, 90% less energy and 90% less land (per calorie) than our toxic western diet of meat, dairy and highly processed foods three meals a day.

That single move will do wonders for our diminishing water supply, biodiversity crisis, global warming, and unsustainable soil erosion—just to name a few. And as a bonus, we’ll all be much healthier, we can eliminate world hunger forever and we can end the needless suffering of 60 billion animals per year in our factory farms. And after 12 weeks, you’ll enjoy this way of eating more than you can imagine.

Saving the best for last. Before signing off, I wish to share one bit of information about Karen (mentioned earlier)—the fact that you’ve no doubt heard her voice thousands of times.

Her most famous word is “re-calculating” and, if you’ve ever taken a wrong turn, you’ve probably heard it—perhaps from Karen, the GPS Girl as she calls herself. She is now the “voice of choice” on over 100 million electronic devices around the world–on five brands of GPS and now the voice of “Siri” on the iPhone.

Meet Karen Jacobsen, the GPS Girl

If you hire Karen to speak at your next event, tell her that J. Morris Hicks sent you.

One more thing. I recently posted a blog about another Australian, Mr. Philip Wollen, a prominent business executive from down under. I later visited his website and found a page I want to share with you.

When we talk about the needless torture and consumption of two billion animals per week for our dinner tables, it’s hard to fully appreciate that number. On Mr. Wollen’s website, he has provided us with a visual. It’s called the Killing Clock and starts the moment you open that page. Then it continuously computes the number of animals killed in 14 different categories since you began watching.

Watch it for a few minutes, then do some soul-searching. Then follow your instincts; I am confident that you will do the right thing. Click here for the Killing Clock Then, if you’re interested, click here to watch Earthlings.

“Confusion over clarity” at schools of nutrition?

Including “the world’s largest nutrition school”

Describing themselves thusly, the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) boasts 25,000 graduates from all 50 states and 90 countries around the world. But what exactly are they teaching? It depends on which one of their twenty-four experts is doing the talking.

Upon first discovering their website and seeing that three of my highly-respected plant-based colleagues were on their list of experts, I initially thought that the IIN would be a good place for me to help spread the word and further promote our book. But, the more I learned about them, the more skeptical I became.

After reviewing my concerns with Dr. T. Colin Campbell, I decided to write a blog on this subject—and Colin told me that he would like to contribute a comment within that blog. (His statement included below)

But first I wanted to reach out to some of the IIN experts who had endorsed my book. Maybe they were seeing something that I wasn’t seeing. So I sent this note to several of them:

Dear fellow plant-based enthusiast and author:

I am writing you today about the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. I am a bit confused about what they are really teaching and what they expect their graduates to teach to their future clients. There seems to be a great deal of contradiction among their experts. The panel of 24 people on the website ranges from Dukan, Agatston, Sears and Fallon on one end of the spectrum to three people on the other end who have endorsed our book: Barnard, Fuhrman and Lyman.

I recently spoke with a young woman who is in her first year of the IIN program. When I asked her how the students are supposed to know which “guru” to follow, she said that she really didn’t know. So how is she supposed to counsel her clients when she becomes a “certified health coach?” What does certification from the “world’s largest nutrition school” really mean? With so much contradiction within their curriculum, it almost seems that the graduates are “certified to be confused about nutrition”—at least as far as promoting health is concerned. Best regards, J. Morris Hicks

My inquiry to them yielded only one response—“that I had raised some very good points,” but provided no further explanation. So, I spoke with Dr. Campbell again and decided to write this blog.

Joshua Rosenthal, founder and president of the Institute of Integrative Nutrition

Joshua Rosenthal, founder and president of the Institute of Integrative Nutrition

Highly profitable venture. My suspicion is that the IIN is a powerful money-maker. With 25,000 graduates at about $5,000 each, that adds up to a tidy $125 million of revenue over the past twenty years. And with a mostly-electronic delivery model, I would imagine that a big chunk of that fortune flows directly to the bottom line.

Where are Mr. Rosenthal’s credentials? You would think that the “founder, director and principal teacher” of the world’s largest nutrition school would provide a detailed summary of his educational background as well as his entire career. This is all I found on his extensive website.

Joshua Rosenthal has been working in the nutrition field for over 25 years and is the driving force behind the school. His experience spans the fields of curriculum development, personal coaching, business and nutritional counseling. He is an insightful healer whose simple approach allows people to quickly and successfully reach new levels of health and happiness. He is also the author of “Integrative Nutrition: Feed Your Hunger for Health & Happiness.”

Survey Image jpg How HealthyI read somewhere that he has a masters of science degree in education, specializing in counseling. Why is there no mention of his educational background on the IIN website? Could it be that the head of the world’s largest nutrition school has had no formal training in nutrition? Also curious that he has no page on Wikipedia.

My Bottom Line. All of us are either part of the solution or we are a part of the problem. And in my opinion:

Confusion is a major problem. Clarity is the obvious solution.

At the IIN, the student is exposed to diametrically opposite points of view and is somehow expected to sort through it all and decide how to counsel their clients once they become certified. Perhaps their certificate should read:

Mary Jones is hereby certified by the world’s largest nutrition school to be thoroughly confused about nutrition. After learning from a panel of experts who disagree on everything, she will now venture forth with her IIN certificate to join the overall “confusion over clarity” emphasis that exists in our dysfunctional “system” of helping the citizens of the world learn what they should be eating.

Bonus Video. A picture is worth a thousand words, and this video says it all. Featuring several of the plant-based experts on the IIN panel alongside at least two of the meat-based members of the same panel—this 2-minute video may help the IIN students decide which “guru” they should be following.

Statement about IIN from Dr. T. Colin Campbell

Dr. Campbell as he appeared in the movie,

Dr. T. Colin Campbell as he appeared in the Forks Over Knives movie.

I lectured to a live IIN audience in New York City about six years ago and, subsequently, my lecture remained on the IIN website for a few years, only recently coming to my attention that it was still there (I therefore requested that they remove it and this has been done).

Although the audience for my lecture was welcoming and quite interested, I found the program’s mission to be most disquieting. My reason for giving the lecture was because a former student of mine at Cornell had signed up for the course a year before and was very confused with the purpose of the lecture series. She, in turn, worked to have me invited.

The speaker roster included a mixture of professionals and non-professionals, some of whom had serious conflicts of interests and some of whom pretended to be authorities when they were not. There is no question that there is a great need for public nutrition information but I strongly believe that this program does more harm than good.

Even though the enrollment fee for the course was exceptionally high, a surprising number of students were nonetheless enrolling, suggesting to me an intense interest in this topic. On the basis of the information that I had at the time, there is no way that this course should receive professional recognition in the teaching of the relationship of diet, nutrition and health. The fact that the students are led to believe that they are credentialed in this subject is a disgrace.

I am very much sensitive to the public’s participation and interest in this topic but enrolling in this lecture series is, in my opinion, a huge waste of time and money.

SEX—and the new E.D. for women. It’s called F.S.D.

The official diagnosis is female sexual interest/arousal disorder

On July 2, 2012, the New York Times published an article about a new sexual disorder that is about to become an officially diagnosed disease. The article was entitled More Women Look Over the Counter for a Libido Fix. From the article:

Female sexual dysfunction remains a controversial topic, even as it becomes an official diagnosis (to be called female sexual interest/arousal disorder) in the DSM-V, the new edition of the psychiatric diagnostic manual, due in 2013.

An often cited statistic, from a report in The Journal of the American Medical Association in 1999, is that 43 percent of women ages 18 to 59 experience some form of sexual dysfunction, including lack of desire, arousal or orgasm; or pain during intercourse.

Zestra Essential Arousal Oil, one of countless sexual enhancement products for women that are already on the market.

About that 43% statistic; it may be often cited, but this is the first time that I have heard about it. And like all other disorders, diseases and maladies—they may not be directly caused by what we eat—but looking at one’s diet is a pretty good place to start.

It just makes sense. Our bodies are comprised of 100 trillion cells that must be nourished by blood flowing through 100,000 miles of arteries, veins and blood vessels. There’s a lot of complicated stuff going on in our bodies all the time and it just makes sense that for all that equipment to operate as planned, the most basic of all necessities—is that we start out with the right fuel for our species. (See Preponderance of evidence for “mostly plants”)

In researching for our book in 2009, I discovered that the human body replaces all 100 trillion cells every ten years. That works out to an average of ten trillion new cells every year. So why is our food so important for those future cells? Because it is the ONLY raw material our bodies use to build new cells (with the exception of air and water).

So how many future new cells are dependent on each bite of food we put in our mouths? In order to figure that out, I counted my bites for a few days back in 2009. And the incredible answer is this:

The health of 100 million future cells in your body is riding on every single bite that you put in your mouth.

Almost everyone now admits that eating more fruits and veggies is good for you—yet the average American still gets far less than ten percent of their calories from whole plants. The other 90% are derived from a toxic combination of meat, dairy, fish, eggs and highly processed carbohydrates.

So what would happen to E.D., F.S.D., heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes and many other maladies if everyone began deriving the vast majority of their calories from whole plants? What if everyone was eating an optimal diet and choosing “vibrant health” for their 100 trillion cells? We know that there would be far less disease, we just don’t know exactly how much. But since everything in our body involves “cells at work,” it just makes sense to do our part to help those cells perform at their most efficient level.

Back to the article; as you can imagine, there is great deal of controversy on this topic and it’ not even yet an officially diagnosed disease. There are already a plethora of women’s sexual aid products on the market (See Zestra above) and no one knows if any of them really work. And what about the side effects—both physical and mental? One expert weighs in:

“What I don’t like is that we’re exploiting women’s sexual desire by selling women products that may not be the best thing for our bodies and may not work,” said Tammy Nelson, a sex and relationship therapist in Connecticut and the author of “Getting the Sex You Want” (Quiver, 2008). Click here to order on Amazon.

The bottom line. Get the diet right first—and it may very well take care of a great many of your health problems, maybe all of them. Of course, along with that superior diet, it’s also best if you incorporate the other “three leaves of health” into your life: regular exercise, adequate rest (7 or 8 hours a night for most) and a purpose in your life, about which you are passionate.

The average American gets a paltry five percent of their calories from the fuel that nature intended for us to eat. That’s why we need 20 million people in our health care industry to take care of the problems that ensue. It just makes sense!
