My 3rd letter to VP Joe Biden in ten days

This one will be delivered by the USPS

White HouseEarlier this week, a friend recommended that I also send my White House letters the old-fashioned way–so I am doing that now. My third letter (below) combines the best of my first two-letters in a compact format on two pages. In case you would also like to send a snail-mail letter, I have provided you with a printer-friendly version at this link: My 3rd letter to VP Joe Biden

You may wish to print that letter, add a hand-written cover note and drop it in the mail to the formal White House address provided.

January 26, 2016

Dear Vice President Biden,

I am writing to you about your “moonshot” cancer initiative, which by definition suggests that it is an ambitious, exploratory and ground-breaking type of project. If your initiative really is all of those things, hopefully you will step outside the “cancer industry” during your initial exploration and will consider possible courses of action that could spell the end of cancer as we know it and, along with it, the trillion dollar industry that benefits from its existence.

First, I would like to share a little information that may have never made it to your desk. In early 2005, some alarming scientific findings linking the consumption of animal protein with cancer were published in a best-selling book called The China Study. Bill Clinton credits that book as a major reason for his switch to a plant-based diet in 2010.

Dr. T. Colin Campbell (author) reported that he was able to turn cancer “on” and “off” in laboratory animals (decades earlier) at Cornell simply by adjusting the amount of casein (milk protein) in their diet. Knowing that his work would create big problems with the meat and dairy industries (who heavily fund Cornell research), the administration there has done their best to marginalize Campbell’s work ever since.

Nine years later, a general practitioner in Ireland (John Kelly, MD) published human results (that strongly reinforced the validity of Dr. Campbell’s findings) in his 2014 book entitled, Stop Feeding Your Cancer. As he said in that book, “The failure of The China Study to translate research momentum into efficient, globally coordinated empirical testing was to my mind a tragedy.”

But now, sir, you have a rare opportunity to revisit that tragedy, a crucial step that may prove to be the most important step ever taken in the 45-year-old war against cancer. All you have to do is ask the right questions to people like Dr. Francis Collins, who heads up the National Institutes of Health. For example, you might want to consider asking this question first:

“In the eleven years since The China Study was published in 2005, why hasn’t the NIH (or any other cancer research organization) conducted a single human study aimed at determining if Dr. Campbell’s lab findings were transferable to human cancer patients?”

We now know from Dr. Kelly’s informal findings in Ireland that they most probably are transferable. And if they are , how many lives could have been saved if our “cancer industry” had urgently begun those formal studies eleven years ago?

Now that I think about it, you should ask that same question to the CEO of the American Cancer Society and all of the other cancer organizations around the world about why none of them have insisted that Campbell’s alarming scientific findings be tested in humans. They certainly have the funds to do so.

According to Charity Navigator, at least three executives of the American Cancer Society each earned well over one million dollars per year in 2013 and the organization’s total revenue that year was just under one billion dollars. Surely, if they desired, they could devote $50 million or so to either confirm or disprove Campbell’s findings. You might also ask the same question to Modern Health’s list of the top 100 most-influential people in healthcare for 2015. Except for the government employees on that list (like President Obama), those people are averaging well over $3 million/year in compensation.

What next? Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Dr. John Kelly and I respectfully request a meeting with you in Washington at your earliest convenience to discuss this crucial topic. I wrote a longer letter to you on January 17. It can be found at the top of my personal website at hpjmh.com. So far, there has been no response to that letter.

In closing, I want you to know that I have great admiration for you, the president and your families. Indeed, in 2008, when I cast my vote for you and President Obama, it was the first time I had ever voted for a Democratic candidate—and I have not been disappointed.

I would like to add that while you would have made a fine president, you can do far more for all of the world’s citizens, and for Beau’s legacy, by tackling this horrendous disease once and for all. I truly believe that you are in the right place at the right time to be that globally recognized leader who can help all the world’s citizens learn about the crucial relationship between our food choices and not only cancer, but most other chronic diseases as well–along with a host of environmental issues that will prove to be far more important than human health in the long run.

Hoping to be able to join your “moonshot” cancer initiative on a fulltime basis for your final eleven months in office and beyond.

Sincerely, J. Morris (Jim) Hicks

My second letter to VP Joe Biden in seven days…

And I am going to keep writing him until I get an answer.

Dear Mr. Biden,

White HouseI am writing to you about your cancer project. In early 2005, some alarming scientific findings linking the consumption of animal protein with cancer were published in a best-selling book called The China Study. Mr. Biden, your question to people like Dr. Francis Collins, who heads up the National Institutes of Health, should be something like this.

Letter to VP Joe Biden. Your war on cancer can be won…

But ONLY if you keep an open mind–ever wary of the cancer bureaucracy.

White HousePresident Obama announced last week in his final State of the Union address that VP Joe Biden would be launching a “moonshot” initiative on cancer during their final year in office. And if there’s a chance that they will be successful, it’s a real good thing that neither of them ever needs to be elected again. That’s because trying to convince billions of people that our wildly popular western diet is killing us will not make them many friends or get them many votes–at least in the near term.

It turns out that the most powerful weapon in our war on cancer has been right under our noses all along; it’s what we put on the ends of our forks every day–and I explain all of that along with scientific and clinical data in my letter below. Now, if Joe Biden is truly open-minded in his endeavor and doesn’t limit all of his activity to the money-motivated, industry-controlled, cancer bureaucracy–I like his chances for success in this mission.

I believe that he is in the right place at the right time to be that globally recognized leader who can help all the world’s citizens learn about the relationship between our food choices and not only cancer, but most other chronic diseases as well–along with a host of environmental issues that will prove to be more important than human health in the long run. His chances for success will increase sharply if he gets the enthusiastic support and involvement of President Obama–after they both leave office.

Here is my letter to Mr. Biden, which I sent today by email to the White House. Please forward this article to anyone you know who might be able to increase the chances that Vice President Biden actually sees this letter.

January 17, 2015 — Via E-Mail

  • Vice President Joe Biden
  • The White House
  • Washington, DC

Subject: Your war on cancer can be won, but it will take a lot of courage.

Dear Mr. Biden,

Last year I wrote a letter on this topic to a friend and former colleague who has just completed his first year in the U. S. Senate. That letter (referenced below) to Mr. Perdue went un-answered. Hopefully, one of your staff members will show you this letter and that you and your team will take this message seriously.

As you well know, President Nixon declared “war on cancer” in 1971, back when your son Beau was just a toddler. That “war” has lasted longer than ALL of America’s military wars combined and has made very little progress–as cancer remains the most-feared disease in the world.

But over the years, cancer has made a lot of people rich and has provided jobs for millions of people. And that’s the very reason that  you will not be successful in your cancer quest by working only within the system. There’s simply too much money riding on maintaining the status quo. To further complicate things, well over 90% of Americans enjoy eating meat and dairy and you’re about to learn why that is going to be such a big problem for you.

But the good news is that, even without the support of the cancer bureaucracy, you can be incredibly successful in providing relief and hope for millions of cancer patients around the world. All you have to do is share with everyone the wonderful little secret that the cancer industry doesn’t want anyone to take seriously: That almost all cancers must have animal protein in order to grow.

As with Bill Clinton, this book will allay the Pope's fears about the quality of a plant-based diet.

This is the book that inspired Bill Clinton to adopt a plant-based diet in 2010.

Dr. T. Colin Campbell (Professor Emeritus at Cornell) provided the scientific foundation of that secret in the early nineties and presented his compelling findings in the best-selling 2005 book, The China Study. The most alarming information he discovered about cancer is that it was strongly associated with the consumption of animal protein. In the lab, Campbell was able to “turn cancer on and off,” simply by adjusting the level of animal protein in the diet up or down. (Protein from plants did not have this effect.)

“Campbell’s careful experiments indicated one bald conclusion: that the favourite food of cancer cells happens to be animal protein; ergo, reduction or elimination of animal protein in the human diet stops cancer cell growth.” — John Kelly, MD, author of Stop Feeding Your Cancer

So why has this secret not been enthusiastically embraced by the cancer industry and shared with the world? A combination of money, power, ego and control. Sadly, our medical schools are now controlled by the drug industry and our schools of nutrition are controlled by the food industry. Because of those two factors, Campbell’s research fell on deaf ears at Cornell and the entire healthcare industry thirty years ago. The unfortunate message here is that there’s simply not much money to be made by vast numbers of people getting healthy.

Fast forward to 2014, when a medical doctor in Ireland (John Kelly, quoted above) published the results of his 8 years of cancer trials in the book shown here. Long before getting to know Colin Campbell, Dr. Kelly read The China Study and decided to test out the findings on his cancer patients in Ireland. The results were astounding. By avoiding animal-based foods, all but one patient in almost six dozen cases was able to slow, arrest or reverse their disease.

Stop Feeding Your CancerIn a nutshell, Dr. Kelly has now demonstrated, with human subjects, the same remarkable facts about animal protein and cancer that Dr. Campbell observed in laboratory animals several decades ago.

When Kelly’s book came out in late 2014, Dr. Campbell and I were hopeful that the entire world would soon learn of the role of diet in promoting or repressing cancer. So far, the authorities in our prominent schools of medicine and nutrition have been disturbingly uninterested as have all of the folks in the cancer bureaucracy.

A word about leadership. As a former business executive, I have been saying for  years that what we really need is powerful leadership when it comes to trying to change what millions of people are eating. We had all hoped that Bill Clinton (after going plant-based in 2010) would provide that leadership, but of course a perceived “anti meat” position would spell the end of Hillary’s run for president. But at this precise moment in time, as Vice President of the USA, you are in a once-in-a-lifetime position to provide the kind of bold leadership that is so rare among our elected officials. Now for some really good news.

John Kelly, MD

The plant-based BONUS. It turns out that shifting our civilization away from such a heavy reliance on animal-based foods will do far more than deal cancer a massive blow. It is also the single most powerful step that we can take to curb climate change AND end world hunger forever. See Chapter 27 in our new book, 4Leaf Guide to Vibrant Health–entitled Cancer, Climate Change and World Hunger. Here’s what Dr. Kelly had to say about our book.

“By emphasizing the whole-food, plant-based diet as mankind’s natural food, the authors of this book have deepened our understanding and our belief. I am convinced that this book will bring closer the day when cancer specialists the world over will wake up and realize that a new, effective treatment against cancer now exists and is ready for use.” — John Kelly, MD

Caldwell Esselstyn, MD. Director of Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Reversal at the Wellness Institute of the Cleveland Clinic.

Caldwell Esselstyn, MD. Now heads up heart disease reversal at the Cleveland Clinic.

In closing, I would just like to say that while you would have made a fine president, you can do far more for all of the world’s citizens, and for Beau’s legacy, by tackling this horrendous disease once and for all. Some say that Al Gore invented the internet; now you have the opportunity to do much, much more–by leading the project to rid the world of its most-feared disease, your action will also greatly alleviate climate change and world hunger at the same time.

Please contact me about arranging a meeting with Dr. Campbell, Dr. Kelly, Dr.  Esselstyn. Dr. Dean Ornish and myself in Washington at your earliest convenience. By the way, Dr. Esselstyn is the Cleveland Clinic physician who has successfully reversed heart disease in over 95% of all of his patients who adhered to that same whole food, plant-based diet that also works wonders with cancer and type 2 diabetes. You may even know Dr. Ornish, as he worked in the Clinton White House and was the first physician to successfully reverse heart disease with simple lifestyle changes (his program now Medicare approved).

Dean Ornish, M.D., along with Esselstyn, influenced President Clinton to walk away from meat and dairy, eat whole plants and reverse his heart disease.

Dean Ornish, M.D.,

One final point, we’re not saying that everyone has to go completely vegan. We’re just saying that humans everywhere should strive to replace the vast majority of their animal-based calories with whole, plant-based foods in order to prevent or reverse most chronic disease. If enough people do that, we can stop climate change, end world hunger and take a giant step toward nourishing our fragile and ailing ecosystem that sustains us as a species.

We all look forward to meeting with you very soon.

Sincerely, J. Morris (Jim) Hicks

PS: Another advantage for you and your cancer initiative is that your boss is already pretty savvy about the huge consequences of our food choices. He demonstrates that savvy in my 2012 article that features a 5-minute video. Did you know that Obama really “gets it” about food?
