Earth Day should be EVERY day!

Because we’re running out of time to re-establish “harmony” with nature.

Robert Goodland, World Bank environmental specialist

Robert Goodland, World Bank environmental specialist, concluded that a shift to plant-based eating was essential for our own survival.

Robert Goodland (World Bank environmental specialist) concluded shortly before his death in 2013, that the all-important climate change tipping point would be passed between 2017 and 2020 unless drastic action was taken. Sadly, in the three years since his death, almost no effective action has been taken–and we’re getting very close to 2017.

Most disturbing of all is that our world leaders, our most prominent environmentalists and the scientific community are not even aware of the leading cause of our most urgent ecological issues. Indeed the oceans, the rainforest, biodiversity and climate change are all seriously out of control, yet we hear no one talking about the urgent need to replace most (if not all) of our animal-based calories with greener, healthier, plant-based alternatives.

Oceans. The heart and arteries of the Earth.

Oceans. The heart and arteries of the Earth.

Long before his death, Goodland concluded that a deliberate shift to plant-based eating was the ONLY pragmatic solution to climate change. Yet, the world did not listen then–and is not listening now. This situation reminds me of a quote that appears as the beginning of the new Food Choices documentary:

The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge. — Stephen Hawking

Our experts all think they’re right. I truly believe that our world leaders, environmentalists and scientists are highly confident that they are taking the right steps to save our environment. The problem is that 95% of them could never take a plant-based solution seriously–because of the almost universal belief (throughout the world) in the “protein myth,” that we all NEED to eat animal protein to be healthy.

Rainforest. The lungs of the Earth.

Rainforest. The lungs of the Earth.

The Bottom Line. The “protein myth” must be dispelled, and it must be dispelled soon if we’re going to have a fighting chance of saving the oceans, rainforest and ourselves from the worst effects of climate change.

I have been writing and speaking about this topic for five years, but am sad to report that things continue to worsen–and they will keep worsening unless we address our top three problems. In the words of the great W. Edwards Deming, we need three things to solve any major problem:

Leadership. Leadership. Leadership.

Our top leaders must soon understand the power of plant foods to promote human health, solve world hunger and save our ecosystem. The greatest win-win-win in history.

Our top leaders must soon understand the power of plant foods to promote human health, solve world hunger and save our ecosystem. The greatest win-win-win in history.

Identifying and “enlightening” the kind of leadership the world needs is central to these next few links that outline what must happen if our oceans, rainforest, civilization and ultimately our human species is to survive:

Fifteen months ago, in January of 2015, I posted a blog about an alarming conclusion  published in the journal Science: “At the rate things are going, the Earth in the coming decades could cease to be a safe operating space for human beings.” The first sentence in the paper reads:

There is an urgent need for a new paradigm that integrates the continued development of human societies and the maintenance of the Earth system (ES) in a resilient and accommodating state.

J. Morris Hicks, promoting health, hope and harmony on planet Earth.

In closing. If there was an “urgent need” in January of 2015, there is an EXTREMELY urgent need now. My “Harmony Project” mentioned above outlined the simple, but difficult, process of moving the ever-growing human population back to living in harmony with nature.

It’s now time to ratchet up the urgency with regards to the identification and enlightenment of the competent, internationally respected leadership we need to make harmony with nature a reality for the first time since we hit the one billion population mark in 1800.

In order for us to recreate that original state of perpetual harmony, we must make every day EARTH DAY indefinitely. There has never been anything more important in the history of humanity.

As for the significance of Earth Day as it now stands, my observation is that the media gives it lip service at best. This morning on CBS, I don’t remember any mention of Earth Day in the entire program. It seemed like well over half the telecast (as with every other network today) was focused on the passing of Prince, the well-loved entertainer.

FREE viewing of “Food Choices” documentary

April 21-24 ONLY

Michal Siewierski on the job

Michal Siewierski on the job

In October of 2014, I was interviewed by Michal Siewierski (producer of Food Choices) right after Dr. T. Colin Campbell at the Center for Nutrition Studies in Ithaca, NY. Eighteen months later, on April 6 (two weeks ago), I attended the international premiere of this powerful new documentary in Chicago.

I made a special one-day trip from New York to join the producer, his family and friends for the occasion, and I am glad that I did. A prime motivator for me was that this is the VERY first movie in which I have been a member of the cast.

Now you have the chance to watch this movie for free; until midnight on Friday 4-22-16. Just visit the Food Choices website below and watch the two-minute trailer or you can go directly to watching the full-length movie by clicking on the Watch the Film NOW link. In that case, you will be emailed a link and password to commence your viewing.

In his new movie, Michal covers a plethora of reasons why all humans should be eating plant-based foods–beginning with human health, a topic that prominently features whole food, plant-based (WFPB) luminaries like T. Colin Campbell, John McDougall, Pam Popper and others. On the environmental side, I was honored to be included–along with my friend and colleague, Richard Oppenlander, who also made the trip to Chicago for the premiere.

Enjoy the movie and share with people you love!

Food. Health. Planet. A message of HOPE.

That is the title of my upcoming presentation in Texas.

J. Morris Hicks, promoting health, hope and harmony on planet Earth.

J. Morris Hicks, promoting health, hope and harmony on planet Earth.

I am speaking this weekend in Austin and have just finished up my PowerPoint presentation. As I state on my website’s “Speaking” page, I could possibly be the only person in the world who is actively promoting a simple, “big picture” solution to the most serious problem in the history of humanity–our food choices in the 21st century. From this website’s speaking page:

Many authors speak about promoting health through diet, a handful speak about the environmental impacts of our diet and even fewer speak about a workable solution to our current environmental dilemma that threatens our very existence as a species. J. Morris Hicks may very well be the ONLY author in the world who speaks passionately about all three.

This dearth of leadership regarding the world’s biggest problem is unconscionable–which is why I have made this my number one priority: doing all that I can to help powerful leaders everywhere understand the urgency of what’s at stake–so much so that a handful of them will join me in making this issue their #1 priority.

In my mind, it all boils down to LEADERSHIP. My twenty years experience as an executive recruiter has prepared me for sorting out our global leadership dilemma, defined here:

There is not a single prominent leader in the world whose primary focus is on the immense environmental damage driven by our grossly unsustainable lifestyle—much less one who is leading a team to launch the urgent global initiative necessary to give us a fighting chance to bring the human species back to living in harmony with nature–before it’s too late.

Known as the lungs of the Earth, our precious rainforest that is systematically being destroyed by humans.

Known as the lungs of the Earth, our precious rainforest that is systematically being destroyed by humans.

How do we identify such a leader? As an executive recruiter (corporate headhunter) my clients routinely asked me to identify and recruit executives who met their extensive job specifications.

Sometimes, after searching the world, there was not a single individual that had ALL of what the client was seeking in their new executive. When that happened, we set about recruiting the candidate (s) who has an abundance of the most important “qualifications,” those skills and qualities that cannot be learned on the job.

That’s what we have now. At the end of the Austin presentation below, I have listed the photos of 12 highly recognizable potential leaders, all of whom enjoy a positive global reputation. They are all examples of the kind of powerful leadership needed. Someone you know may be able to help us reach one of these leaders–or another leader who has a similar resumé.

Only ONE of the twelve candidates in my list has been fully enlightened regarding the singular importance of our food choices in the 21st century. But, with an open mind, the other 11 could gain that “enlightenment” in less than a week. Importantly, they all possess the four qualifications that cannot be gained in a week—or a decade for that matter. Each one on my list:

Notice how the growth of human population parallels the destruction of a cumulative 5 billion acres of forest.

Notice how the growth of human population parallels the destruction of a cumulative 5 billion acres of forest.

  1. Enjoys a positive international reputation for leadership and integrity
  2. Has demonstrated a sincere interest in the environment
  3. Is well known and respected around the world
  4. Either has the wealth and/or the access to the kinds of money that it will take to quickly change the way the world thinks about food.

The bottom line. There is not a single person in the world (with the above resumé) who is fully enlightened about the crucial importance of our food choices AND has made changing the world’s eating habits his/her #1 priority. And, as I explain in my presentation, it only takes ONE of this kind of special leader to generate a significant shift toward plant-based eating around the world—particularly in the five regions where over 70% of the meat is being eaten: China, Europe, USA, Brazil and Russia.

My presentation includes information about what our lifestyle is doing to the major elements of nature that give us life: the oceans and the rainforest.

Every year, our highly destructive and wasteful lifestyle is inflicting major damage on the natural environment that gives us life: the oceans, soil, atmosphere, biodiversity and rainforest.

Just imagine what one powerful, well-financed leader can get done–with the assistance of credible plant-based “messengers” like Martina Navratilova, Bill Clinton, Venus & Serena Williams, Tony Gonzalez, Carl Lewis, James Cameron, Ellen DeGeneres, Gary Player, Leonardo DiCaprio, Al Gore and many others.

As we approach critical environmental tipping points (we may have already passed some), it’s imperative that we take our life-saving message to the billions of people who are eating the most meat–urging them to dramatically change their food choices: by eating far less meat and far more plants. I am convinced that our ecosystem, our civilization and our future as a species is riding on those critical food choices.

This powerful message of hope is included on the final slide:

A Vision of Harmony

As people everywhere begin to learn the complete truth about their food choices, millions will start replacing most, if not all, of their animal-based calories with healthier and “greener,” plant-based alternatives. As we begin working on the “demand” side of the equation, markets will quickly respond, people will begin getting healthier, the cost of healthcare will plummet, water will become more plentiful, trees can be planted on the freed-up land and our fragile ecosystem will begin to heal.

Harmony

Eventually, we must also deal with overpopulation, over-consumption and the excessive burning of fossil fuels–but those tasks will take many decades, if not centuries. Taking URGENT action NOW with our food choices can buy us the time we need to address them all.

As a former engineer, business executive, strategy consultant and corporate headhunter, I feel like I’m working on the most important project in the history of humanity—and that my clients are the children of the world—mine, yours, everyone’s. We cannot let them down! Sincerely, J. Morris (Jim) Hicks
