“The Low-Carb Fraud” — Dr. Campbell’s latest book

Featuring a separate appendix on the latest “Atkins” craze–The Paleo Diet

A small book that can he read in one-hour, Dr. Campbell once again provides “clarity over confusion” as he explains why we rarely hear anything from the mainstream system about the miraculous healing powers of a whole food, plant-based diet.

He succinctly describes those powers in the included Introduction to his second book, Whole, Rethinking the Science of Nutrition. It was in this section that I found this powerful statement:

If you want to live free of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes for your entire life, that power is in your hands (and your knife and fork). But sadly, medical schools, hospitals, and government health agencies continue to treat nutrition as if it plays only a minor role in health. And no wonder: the standard Western diet, along with its trendy “low-fat” and “low-carb” cousins, is actually the cause, not the cure, of most of what ails us.

In a nutshell, the “miracle cure” science has been chasing for the past half century turns out not to be a new wonder drug painstakingly formulated after decades of brilliant and relentless lab work or a cutting-edge surgical tool or technique using lasers and nanotechnology or some transformation of our DNA that will turn us all into immortal Apollos and Venuses. Instead, the secret of health has been in front of us all along, in the guise of a simple and perhaps boring word: nutrition.

When it comes to our health, it turns out the trump card is the food we put in our mouths each day. In the process of learning all this, I also learned something else very important: why most people didn’t know this already.

Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry, Cornell University---author of The China Study

Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry, Cornell University—author of The China Study

So how can something so simple and so powerful be ignored by so many? As we learned in The China Study and in Whole, the short answer is money. There is simply no money to be made in people getting healthy—the money is in managing disease.

And as Dr. Campbell says in this latest book, trillions of dollars will be lost in our food, medical and pharmaceutical industries if there is a sudden shift in the direction of a health-promoting, whole food, plant-based diet. So, what can we do?

We can fight money with money. For the past year, I have shifted my primary focus to how our food choices impact the long-term sustainability of our ecosystem, our civilization and ultimately, our species. And, during that time, I have come to agree with Dr. Stephen Emmott (Ten Billion) that the human race is doomed (he used a different word), unless we make some HUGE changes quickly. He seemed to agree with me that the ONLY major change that we can make quickly enough to make much of a difference is to change what we eat.

Fortunately, that involves the biggest “win-win” proposition in the history of humankind. The same food choices that promote vibrant health and will eliminate over 70% of our medical conditions and costs—are the same food choices that will enable us to curb global warming, solve the water crisis, end the destruction of rainforest and feed the world’s hungry. How do we make that happen?

Dr. Campbell says we must study the entire human body to understand how nutrition works.

Dr. Campbell says we must study the entire human body to understand how nutrition works.

One powerful leader and a few caring billionaires. Until proven otherwise, I will continue to pursue the path of helping at least one powerful leader and a few caring billionaires “catch the vision” of what must be done. Powerful leadership with enough money can be highly influential in changing the eating habits in the regions of the world where most of the meat, dairy, eggs and fish (MDEF) are being eaten. The top five are China, Europe, USA, Russia and Brazil—where over 70% of the world’s meat is consumed.

And since the rest of the world tends to follow the wealthier nations, we’ll soon be able to able to change eating habits everywhere. How much will it cost? My guess is somewhere between one hundred billion and one trillion dollars.

Sound like a lot of money to you? True, but when you consider that a relatively obscure internet app (WhatsApp) recently sold for $19 Billion, it begs the question?

Which is worth more? WhatsApp or planet Earth?

So, assuming we can find the $100 billion, how do we spend it? We prepare our powerful message of truth and we take it directly to the consumers of the world—bypassing governments, industries and institutions. I like to call it a Never-Ending MASSIVE Global Awareness Campaign aimed at telling people the simple truth about nutrition as stated by Dr. Campbell above. Plantrician_seed_packet_fin

In addition, massive funding will be needed to quickly educate the physicians of the world relative to the powerful health benefits of a whole food, plant-based diet. For, without the eventual voice of medicine onboard and promoting patient adoption—this essential dietary shift on a broad, global scale will be elusive.

Substantial funding of non-profit organizations like these two will be needed soon:

T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, whose stated mission is to promote optimal nutrition through science-based education, advocacy, and research. By empowering individuals and health professionals, we aim to improve personal, public, and environmental health.

The Plantrician Project, with a mission to educate, equip and empower our physicians and healthcare practitioners with knowledge about the indisputable benefits of plant-based nutrition. To provide them with the resources with which they, in turn, can use to empower and inspire their patients to shift from the harmful typical Western diet to a life-changing whole food, plant-based way of living. (The website for this important initiative will be up soon and I will alert you at that time.)

Based on Dr. Campbell's statement, "The closer we get to eating a diet of whole, plant-based foods, the better off we will be."

“The closer we get to eating a diet of whole, plant-based foods, the better off we will be.” — T. Colin Campbell

One more thing; some news about 4Leaf. I am pleased to announce that our 4Leaf for Life concept of healthy eating AND our 4Leaf Survey will soon be part of Dr. Campbell’s eCornell plant-based nutrition course. Hopefully, people around the world may soon be able take this survey electronically (for free) on the TCC Center for Nutrition Studies website.

The 4Leaf concept first appeared in Chapter 10 of our book (October 2011, BenBella Books), and the 4Leaf Survey first appeared on this website in March of 2012. It is now a registered trademark.

Full disclosure, I am a co-founder of Plantrician and have been a board member of the TCC Center for Nutrition Studies since February of 2012. As the creator and owner of the 4Leaf intellectual property, I will not derive any financial gain from having it appear on the TCCCNS website or the eCornell learning platform.

“Big Fat News” that Americans love to hear…

Big Fat Disaster for our health, ecology and our future as a species

6b055f5371e047f4dba2485b43dc5664Normally, I don’t give books like the Big Fat Surprise the dignity of providing them any mention on my website.

But yesterday, when I saw Dr. Sanjay Gupta actually recommending that everyone read this book, I decided that I should at least tell my readers what I think. First, here’s the 4-minute CNN segment (6-9-14) with Dr. Gupta interviewing the author.

To be fair, on the broadcast, Sanjay gave a little time to America’s most famous “real doctor,” (Dean Ornish) who said that books like this one are dangerous. But that won’t keep people from buying them. Whether it’s Atkins, South Beach, Dukan, Paleo or this book, people are always looking for good news about their bad habits.

Promoting health, hope and harmony on planet Earth

Promoting health, hope & harmony on planet Earth—with the “Save the world” diet. Plant-based foods.

But NONE of those diet books ever mention anything about what our food choices are doing to the environment—and what that means for our future. As I’ve stated many times on this blog,

“even if one of those high protein diets were the healthiest possible way for humans to eat, it wouldn’t really matter—because they’re grossly unsustainable.”

It’s simple third grade arithmetic. On average, meat, dairy, egg and fish (MDEF) calories require over ten times as much land, water and energy to produce as do plant-based calories. For the past forty years, we’ve destroyed over thirty million acres of rainforest a year—mostly to provide land for growing animal-based foods. When does this madness end?

Let's not forget the lifetime suffering of billions of animals in factory farms so that we may eat their flesh.

Let’s not forget the lifetime suffering of billions of animals in factory farms so that we may eat their flesh.

We’re now torturing, slaughtering and eating about 100 billion land animals a year for our dinner tables. When the rest of the world catches up with our madness, that number will be over 300 billion. If you count the fish we eat (and the fish we feed to the fish we eat), we’re destroying trillions of creatures—unnecessarily—every year. When will the madness end?

Not anytime soon as long as our trusted celebrities like Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Dr. Mehmet Oz keep featuring the “diet gimmick of the month” on their shows and advising their viewers to purchase the product. But not everyone is buying this crap. Here’s an excerpt from one of the not-too-favorable reviews on Amazon.

Big Fat Surprise (BFS) is yet another book in a long line of books that informs the reader that everything you thought you knew about nutrition is wrong: saturated fat from animals is actually quite good for you, cholesterol isn’t really important, the government lied to you, nutritionists and dietitians lied to you, the American Heart Association lied to you, etc… Leaving aside the concept of that kind of a conspiracy actually existing is really absurd, what I’m surprised about is that publishers can keep churning out books like this and people are gullible enough to keep buying them.

Don’t buy this book. Normally, when I mention a book in my blog, I provide a link to Amazon where you can conveniently buy it. But, since I get a modest commission from my Amazon sales, I simply don’t want a commission on this book. That would mean that I would benefit financially for rewarding this author and Simon & Schuster for misleading the innocent public.

Want to read the truth about “the Low Carb Fraud?” Read Dr. Campbell’s new book by the same name. The Low-Carb Fraud

When will the madness end? When our civilization collapses and all of our descendants are spending their final days in absolute misery—fighting for their lives.

Why aren’t Gupta and Oz telling us this “inconvenient truth?”

Infestation, civilization, problems, predicaments & leadership

We can ‘solve’ problems but we must ‘endure’ predicaments.

So what about climate change? Is it a problem that can be solved or is it a predicament that must be endured? That depends on who you ask. If you look at this chart that is updated monthly by Scripps, it makes it difficult to believe that we’ll find a way out of this mess.

As noted below, May is the first month with CO2 in our atmosphere over 400 parts per million in millions of years—remember, we’ve only been around for about 200,000 years.

Notice that there has been ZERO progress since the IPCC got started. It's gotten worse EVERY year.

Notice that there has been ZERO progress since the IPCC got started. It’s gotten worse EVERY year.

This morning, I re-examined a recent (April 2014) article by Daniel Smith that appeared in the New York Times Magazine. (See link below). It was all about Paul Kingsworth and his conclusion that civilization is over and that we must learn to live with the mess the we humans have made out of a perfectly healthy planet. From that article:

Kingsnorth and Hine’s aspirations for their manifesto weren’t revolutionary, but neither were they nihilistic. Each man draws a distinction between a “problem,” which can be solved, and a “predicament,” which must be endured. “Uncivilization” was firm in its conviction that climate change and other ecological crises are predicaments, and it called for a cadre of like-minded writers to “challenge the stories which underpin our civilization: the myth of progress, the myth of human centrality and the myth of separation from ‘nature.’ ”

It reminded me of some of my earlier posts where I had concluded that humans are the infestation of planet Earth and that it was our responsibility (as the only species with a cognitive niche) to fix it. What does infestation look like? Here’s one small example of human activity in just the United States. This video compresses 203 years of “human progress” into less than a half-minute:

A 24-second look at what we’ve done to fish migration in the USA

Paul Kingsworth, Stephen Emmott and many others have concluded that our civilization is either doomed or has already ended. They see no way to reverse the damage that has been done.

Paul Kingsworth might be right. Maybe our civilization is already over. But, until someone can prove my premise wrong, I am going to keep working on the solution.

Paul Kingsworth might be right. Maybe our civilization is already over. But, until someone can prove my premise wrong, I am going to keep working on the solution.

Here’s the way I see it. In my last blog (posted 5-27-14) I listed four problems that must be solved in the next 100 years in order to have a chance of saving our civilization.

  1. Changing what we eat.
  2. Solving our overpopulation dilemma.
  3. Switching our global energy system from fossil fuels to renewables.
  4. Creating a new economic model that enables us to live in harmony with nature.
Promoting health, hope and harmony on planet Earth

Promoting health, hope & harmony on planet Earth—with the “Save the world” diet.

The good news is that changing what we eat has a three-fold feature of being the easiest, the quickest and by far, the most ecologically beneficial of the four challenges. Any meat-eater can change to 100% plant-based overnight and can immediately start helping to “save the world” as we know it.

And, if enough people change soon enough, we’ll quickly change the way the planet is being used, vast swaths of land can be returned to Nature, water pollution and soil erosion will ease, the oceans will get healthier, world hunger will be solved, we end the barbaric practice of torturing hundreds of billions of creatures each year and we’ll all get much healthier.

But most importantly, we’ll buy enough time to work on the other three challenges—all of which will take many decades, if not centuries to solve.

Am I the only one who believes we can beat climate change?

What would happen if Oprah and Ralph caught my vision?

What would happen if Oprah and Ralph caught my vision? Almost everyone in the world has heard of both.

No. But, of the truly educated population on this crucial topic, most are probably beginning to lose hope. On the other hand, the vast majority of the world’s humans are oblivious to the looming disaster. They’re all busy with jobs, baseball games, wars, and a zillion other activities that are exclusive only to our species.

They don’t really worry about climate change, because they figure that somehow it will be solved and, whether it is or not, it is not likely to affect their life and there’s not much they can do about it anyway.

But not me. Because of my background, I have a clearer view of the “big picture” than most and I also understand what can happen when you have powerful leadership with unlimited resources. I explain all of that in my most recent blog of 5-27-14, Just ONE powerful leader and a few caring billionaires

What would happen if Pope Francis caught my vision?

What would happen if Pope Francis caught my vision? He can affect the thinking of billions.

Here’s what I believe can happen. Over the next ten years, if we can influence billions of people everywhere to replace most of their meat, dairy, egg and fish (MDEF) calories with plant-based alternatives—that many great things can happen.

  1. If enough people make big enough changes, we can eliminate 75% of the MDEF calories currently produced in the world.
  2. We’ll be able to feed all 7 billion people on less than half the 8 billion acres currently being used.
  3. We’ll free up more than 4 billion acres of land—an area about twice the size of the United States.
  4. We can plant trees on most of that land, returning hundreds of millions of acres to rainforest that have been ravaged by human “progress” for the last century.

It only takes one. I believe that if just one powerful leader (with unlimited resources) makes changing what we eat his/her #1 priority for the next ten years, that huge progress can be made and that the worst effects of climate change can be avoided. And, until someone either proves me wrong, or has a better idea, I will continue to promote the “One Leader—Unlimited Resources” model as our ONLY known chance to save our civilization.

What would happen if Ted Turner caught my vision?

What would happen if Ted Turner caught my vision? This remarkable man still could have one more big rodeo before he rides off into the sunset.

Who could that leader be? If they “caught the vision,” any of these people could be that leader: Oprah Winfrey, Pope Francis, Bill Gates, Prince Charles, Barack Obama, Warren Buffett, Bill Clinton, Ted Turner or a handful of others.

And, as an executive recruiter for the last 15 years, I believe almost all problems boil down to leadership. The right leader, with enough resources, can accomplish almost anything.
