When you hear “alternative” medicine, what comes to mind?

For most, it’s some kind of “kooky” avoidance of “real” medicine…

“Conventional” doctors treat symptoms, have not been trained to promote health and really don’t want to hear about your success stories with “alternative medicine”

Until they get their own tragic diagnosis of disease—like Sharlene in the video below. For most, it’s something that you seek out after you’ve been diagnosed with a serious disease. Then, when thousands of people return to their cardiologist after reversing their heart disease by following the advice of Dr. Esselstyn and Dr. Campbell, their doctor usually utters something like:

“Whatever you’re doing, keep doing it.”

But the cardiologist doesn’t really want to know any of the details—and deep down inside is probably thinking that she’s lost a patient.

We know that 95% of the cases of heart disease and type 2 diabetes are easily reversible with a whole foods, plant-based diet. But for cancer, the reversal chances vary greatly as to whether the disease is slowed, stopped or reversed. Further, in terms of reversal of any disease—most of the evidence is anecdotal. Here is a video of Sharlene, who had her cancer reversed by following the Gerson Therapy guidelines. It is a 2009 video that has been seen almost 50,000 times.

Although her story is compelling, she makes a disturbing comment late in the video about “finishing the Gerson Program.” It sounded like she was seeing the plant-based Gerson approach as being something you resort to temporarily after getting your death sentence. Eventually, people everywhere need to know about the health-promoting power of whole plants to prevent the vast majority of ALL of our chronic diseases.

Meet Sharlene

More on “alternative medicine.” Wikipedia says it’s any practice claiming to heal that does not fall within the realm of conventional medicine. Claims about the efficacy of alternative medicine tend to lack evidence, and have been shown to repeatedly fail during testing.

But the main problem with “conventional medicine” is that most of the medical practice has become one of treating diseases that never need exist. Like Dr. Esselstyn says, “Heart disease a toothless paper tiger that need never exist.”

Alternative Medicine can mean different things to different people. For me, it’s not a temporary treatment for a problem—it’s a lifelong process of promoting and maintaining vibrant health.

Confusion over clarity. An internet search of “alternative medicine” yielded 88 million results with treatments, therapies and potions that boggle the mind. No doubt there are some very effective treatments—but how is one supposed to know the difference between a scam and a reliable and effective treatment?

Our entire medical system took the wrong road long ago when it began promoting “allopathic” medicine over health promotion. As the root words imply, allopathic means treating symptoms—mostly with drugs. But there is a better way; in fact, Hippocrates spoke of it thousands of years ago when he said, “Your food will be your medicine and your medicine will be your food.”

He was speaking of the need for all species (including humans) to eat the food that nature intended. In the case of humans, that is whole, plant-based foods. Unfortunately, even our most recognized convert to plant-based eating (Bill Clinton) often speaks of  his diet-style in a manner that makes it sound like an “alternative” approach that is only needed when you’re been diagnosed with heart disease, cancer or other chronic diseases.

Bill Clinton making a point about his “plant-based” diet to Wolf Blitzer on CNN. You can see this video on the Video tab of this website.

The Bottom Line. Until this superior diet-style becomes widely accepted by the majority of the people, Bill Clinton’s health promoting diet will always be considered just some kind of “kooky” therapy to consider only when you’re sick.

But because of the work of heroes like Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, future generations may enjoy a life of vibrant health—mostly free of the need for what we now know as conventional medicine. Exactly what Hippocrates had in mind.

The good news is that you don’t have to wait for those future generations. You can embrace the health promoting powers of whole plants for you and your family—NOW!

“Healthiest meal ever?” — More “confusion over clarity.”

Just when we thought it couldn’t get any more confusing…

A bunch of food researchers from an independent British firm started out with over 4,000 health claims that were used by food producers and supermarkets to hawk their products. Then they whittled those down to 222 claims that they judged to be based on “scientific fact.” And, from that they created what they called the “healthiest meal ever.” (See link to source article below)

Caldwell Esselstyn, MD. Director of Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Reversal at the Wellness Institute of the Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr, of the Cleveland Clinic would vehemently disagree. He would say that it’s just another variation of the typical western diet—the one that promotes heart disease. And since he has successfully reversed heart disease in over 95% of his patients, I tend to believe him more than I would the British research team.

So guess what their “healthiest meal ever” included? Would you believe salmon, olive oil chicken, and yogurt. In addition to a few items that were actually healthy, their meal included these heart-clogging delicacies:

  • Fresh and smoked salmon terrine, which contains Omega 3 and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) which is good for the arteries, heart and brain.
  • An accompanying mixed leaf salad with a dressing of extra virgin olive oil is good for maintaining normal blood cholesterol levels.
  • Chicken casserole with lentils and mixed vegetables is a particularly nutritious main meal, with the study showing it could safely make 80 official health claims.
  • For dessert, a live yogurt-based blancmange topped with walnuts and a sugar-free caramel-flavoured sauce scores well as being good for digestion, the teeth and blood glucose control.

Note that the items in red are definite no-no’s on Esselstyn’s diet.

Dr. Campbell would also strongly disagree with the “healthiest meal ever” described in the source article. And he would challenge their use of “scientific fact.”

And just in case anyone was wondering about the accuracy of their claims, the article ended with this statement. “The meal was created by scientists at Leatherhead Food Research, an independent British organisation, using the 222 surviving health claims which have now been cleared by EU food watchdogs.”

It seems that the “protein myth” and the “olive oil is good for you myth” are both alive and well in the European Union. With information like this touted as being based on “scientific fact,” how can the poor consumer know what to believe?

That is exactly why I have been talking about the need to spend a lot of time and money dispelling that myth. Despite a mountain of scientific and clinical evidence to the contrary, an estimated 95% of the smartest and best-educated people in the western world truly believe that we “need” to eat animal protein to be healthy.

Not only is that animal protein killing us, it is also totally unsustainable for very much longer for a multitude of reasons. Click here for more about how we might go about dispelling the protein myth. There was one bit of truth in the article that I will share with you here, from the CEO of the British research firm:

We have also shown that healthy foods do not have to be dull,’ he said. ‘We carry out thousands of consumer taste tests a year and one thing is clear. No matter how healthy, if foods do not taste good they will not sell.

Source Article: Healthiest meal ever

The Bottom Line. I agree with him, “No mater how healthy, if foods do not taste good they will not sell.” But the fact is, that great chefs can prepare super-healthy 4Leaf meals that will delight any palate. It might take some time, but everyone has it within their power to take charge of their own health—by simply making truly healthy food choices.

Our 4-piece kit below might help get you started. If you’re committed, you’ll be able to delight your palate with a diet-style that you can easily maintain for the rest of your life.

Focus on “risk factors”— is missing the whole point!

Another huge example of “confusion over clarity”

Notice that the geniuses at the American Heart Association didn’t even have a “plaque-building diet” in their top ten risk factors for heart disease.

A quick internet search this morning revealed that according to the World Health Organization, there are a total of 12,000 diseases, and all of them have multiple risk factors. Let’s take heart disease for example. According the American Heart Association, there are ten “leading” risk factors:

    • Age: More than 83% of people who die from coronary heart disease are 65 or older.
    • Being male: Men have a greater risk of heart attack than women do.
    • Family history. Those with parents or close relatives with heart disease.
    • Race: Heart disease risk is higher among African Americans, Mexican Americans, American Indians, native Hawaiians, and some Asian Americans.
    • Smoking: Cigarette smoking increases your risk of developing heart disease by two to four times.
    • High cholesterol: As blood cholesterol rises, so does risk of coronary heart disease.
    • High blood pressure: High blood pressure increases the heart’s workload.
    • Sedentary lifestyle. Inactivity is a risk factor for coronary heart disease.
    • Excess weight: People who have excess body fat—especially if a lot of it is at the waist—are more likely to develop heart disease even if they have no other risk factors.
    • Diabetes: Having diabetes seriously increases your risk of developing cardiovascular disease. About three-quarters of people with diabetes die from heart disease.

Sadly, the implication for the casual reader is that if they have none of the top ten risk factors, they can chow down on all of the burgers, steaks and ribs that they want— and they won’t get heart disease. Wrong. Speaking of diet; did you notice that it didn’t make it into the top ten.

Yet Dr. Esselstyn and Dr. McDougall enjoy a 95%+ success rate in reversing heart disease with nothing more than a changing the patient’s diet—to whole, plant-based foods. Another tragic case of confusion over clarity from our health authorities.

And what about the other 11,999 diseases? Let’s take breast cancer. On the American Cancer Society website, I found one page entitled “What are the risk factors for breast cancer?” (See link below)

That single page had over 4,000 words—about a half hour of reading for most people. Incredibly it included things like night work, wearing bras, and using antiperspirants. And here’s what they had to say about diet. Incredibly, the “dietary” information was found under this heading:

Factors with uncertain, controversial, or unproven effect on breast cancer risk

Diet. Many studies have looked for a link between what women eat and breast cancer risk, but so far the results have been conflicting.

Some studies have indicated that diet may play a role, while others found no evidence that diet influences breast cancer risk. Studies have looked at the amount of fat in the diet, intake of fruits and vegetables, and intake of meat. No clear link to breast cancer risk was found.

Your very best source of confusion about cancer

Talking about confusion over clarity! We know that cultures who consume mostly whole plant-based foods have cancer levels approaching zero. And we know from The China Study (Dr. T. Colin Campbell) that the leading cause of cancer (of all kinds) is our toxic western diet.

Meanwhile, back to the risk factors. How many are there for all diseases? If we have 12,000 different diseases and ten or more risk factors for each of them, we only need to keep track of roughly 120,000 risk factors if we wish to remain disease free.

But there is a better way. We call it CLARITY. It’s all about getting real clear about exactly what we should be doing to promote vibrant health. And, unlike the 4,000 words to describe just the risk factors for breast cancer, we only need two words to describe the most important thing that you need to promote vibrant health: Whole Plants.

By simply deriving most of our daily calories from whole plants, we could reduce our total cost of healthcare by up to 80%. And, many of those 12,000 diseases would simply disappear—along with their 120,000 risk factors. And a lot less money would be made by the 30 million people in this country whose livelihood depends on us remaining sick.

The original source of my oft-used phrase, “confusion over clarity.” Dr. Campbell of course favors the latter.

Believe it or not, this blog was inspired by a 6-22-12 headline in Medical News Today, that read: “Does Psoriasis Increase Type 2 Diabetes Risk?” My response was “Enough already!” I am sick and tired of hearing about the 12,000 diseases and all the risk factors that go along with them and talking with your doctor about which drug is right for you. It is time for some clarity!

Want to enjoy vibrant health without juggling thousands of risk factors, many of which you can’t control anyway? Consider making our 4 leaves of health a permanent part of your life—beginning with a 4Leaf diet-style that derives over 80% of its calories from whole plants.
