My first product review for PlantPure Foods–5 Star!

After lunching with Dr. Michael Klaper and Marlene Watson-Tara

Marlene Watson-Tara

Marlene Watson-Tara operates her global business online from Scotland.

How did I do that? By watching their interview on YouTube while enjoying my “doctored-up” version of the Spaghetti and Veggie Balls frozen meal from PlantPure Foods. Their visit was airing via Skype and YouTube from California and Scotland respectively.

While I have enjoyed many of the meals right out of the box, I like to add fresh veggies and fruit as available. Today, I added broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, tomato and avocado. In a word, it was SENSATIONAL Scroll on down for my preparation technique.

A little background. About six weeks ago, I went online and ordered ten frozen, whole food, plant-based meals–and they arrived less than ten days later at our doorstep in Vermont. Total price, including delivery (in a styrofoam frozen container) was $8.49 per meal. If I had ordered a 20-pak, my cost per meal would have dropped to $6.89. Before I share my preparation method…

I want to show you a picture of the finished meal.

PLantPure Spag Veg

As of now, my good friend Nelson Campbell’s PlantPure Food company is offering ten different frozen meals. If you order the 20-pak, you will receive two of each meal. But since my freezer is rather small here in our vacation condo, I opted for the 10-pak. Today, I started with the PlantPure Spaghetti & Veggie Balls meal and went from there.

My first step today was to slit the plastic cover and cook on HIGH in the microwave for 5 minutes. Since I used only half of the contents for today’s lunch, I have halved the various nutrition facts that appear on the carton:

  • Total calories 330; Calories from fat 17 (The meal is a very low 5.2% fat)
  • Sodium is 75 mg., 6 grams of sugar, 3 grams of fiber and NO cholesterol
  • #1 ingredient is whole wheat pasta, along with lots of veggies, nuts and soy.
  • Particularly with all the veggies that I added, this is definitely a 4Leaf winner.

Spaghetti, Vegetable Balls, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Brussels Sprouts, etc.

Preparation: While the frozen meal was heating, I cut up one serving each of broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts and spread them out on a plate. When I took the meal out of the microwave, I added a little soy sauce to my veggie plate and set the microwave for 3 minutes.

Michael Klaper, MD

While the veggies were cooking, I stirred up the PlantPure meal, left about half in the package and put it back in the refrigerator (for tomorrow). I then cut up about 1/4 of an avocado, a dozen cherry tomatoes and a tiny bit of bread.

I then added the spaghetti and veggie balls to the top of my fresh veggie plate and gave the mixture one more minute in the microwave. When the bell rang, I added my avocado, tomatoes and bread on top and went into the living room to enjoy my meal with Marlene and Michael–on YouTube on our big Sony Smart TV.

PlantPure MealsA healthy blend of nutrition and economy. Along with the additions that I made to this meal, I compute that the total cost was about $6. That includes 1/2 of the $8.49 frozen meal plus my other ingredients. With my veggie, bread, avocado and tomato additions, my total meal contained about 450 calories–working out to a total of just $1.33 per 100 calories.

Taste, Convenience and Nutrition. In addition to the wonderful taste, the thing that I love most about these PlantPure meals is the great feeling that I have all the time–knowing that I can have a tasty 4Leaf meal on the table in just a few minutes. Click here to take a look at all TEN of the meals. Each one has a picture and complete nutritional information.

Worried about microwave cooking? I am not–and I blogged on that topic a few years ago. Are microwave ovens safe? Do they destroy nutrients?

In addition to the food, the PlantPure online Store offers many kinds of health related products.

Marlene and FriendsFinally, don’t forget to visit “Marlene and Friends.” She is featuring yours truly on an upcoming half-hour webcast before the end of March. As she says below, “Food is our Future.” I am delighted to be one of her 30 “friends” to be included in this series.

J. Morris Hicks and Kerry Graff, MD, join the faculty of the world’s largest plant-based nutrition healthcare conference.

Appearing in Anaheim, California — September 2016

Anaheim picture JMHI am honored to announce that Dr. Kerry Graff (my co-author) and I will be telling our “4Leaf Story” at the 4th annual international plant-based nutrition healthcare conference in Anaheim later this year–September 21-24 (see pbnhc.com). Kerry and I would love to see you there, and if you are unable to attend, maybe you can encourage others to make the trip.

A little background. In late 2013, my good friends (Susan Benigas, Dr. Scott Stoll and Tom Dunnam)  at plantrician.org hosted the inaugural PBNHC in Naples, Florida, with about 200 in attendance. It grew to well over 300 in 2014 and exploded to nearly 600 this past September. This year, they chose the Anaheim Marriott which can handle crowds up to 1,000.

Dr. Kerry Graff, co-author of the 4Leaf Guide has used the survey more than any other doctor on Earth.

Faculty Page. We are scheduled to speak on the first morning of the event right after plant-based superstars Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn and Dr. Dean Ornish. (See Program Agenda link below)

CME credits. Lots of CME’s are available for medical doctors, nurses, dietitians, physician assistants and other disciplines. See above link for details. For other conference information:

This is a rare opportunity for you to hear–and meet a host of plant-based professionals and to mix and mingle with a large group of like-minded people. Even if you aren’t interested in earning CME’s, we hope that will consider attending this exceptional conference which is unlike any other.

Plantrician logoThe organizers have asked us to tell our 4Leaf Story (at the conference) with the primary emphasis on how mainstream medicine can use our 4Leaf materials (like the 4Leaf Survey) to promote human health. Of course, we will also touch on the all-important ecological and sustainability issues which depend greatly on the rapid adoption of a plant-based way of eating all over the world. Click on the Plantrician logo above to learn more about the team that is behind this great conference.

Our book (pictured below) was published in August 2015 and is now being used in health-promoting medical practices around the world. All of those practices are making great use of our 4Leaf Survey, which is now available in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, in addition to English. Six Steps for Getting the Most out of the FREE 4Leaf Survey

4Leaf Survey goes international (adding four languages)–and much more.

1. IntroductionSurvey Image jpg How HealthyThe U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that poor diet is as harmful to health as is smoking. Yet, while smoking status is routinely assessed at every patient visit, evaluation of dietary health is neglected because a quick tool to assess its status has been lacking. Until now.

Our simple 4Leaf Survey can be completed by almost anyone (at home or in the doctor’s office) in less than three minutes. The 4Leaf score that is generated serves as a dietary vital sign, assessing the healthfulness of each patient’s diet–regardless of which or whose dietary regimen they are following.

The 4Leaf Survey was designed to help people everywhere estimate the percent of their daily calories that are derived from the healthiest of foods–whole plants, still in nature’s package.

2. Definition and History. The 4Leaf concept is all about providing people everywhere with a simple tool to help them move quickly in the direction of the optimal diet for humans–as defined by Dr.T. Colin Campbell (Cornell nutritional scientist): “The closer we get to eating a diet of whole, plant-based foods, the better off we will be.”

What could be simpler? The closest we could get would be to derive 100% of our daily calories from whole plants. But since that may not practical for most people, we decided to set the top bar at 80%, meaning that in order to eat at the 4Leaf level, one needs to derive 80% or more of their calories from whole, plant-based foods. The 1Leaf, 2Leaf, and 3Leaf levels begin at 20%, 40% and 60% respectively. Sadly, we estimate that 90% of the current USA population would currently score below the 1Leaf level on our survey. See also Intro to 4Leaf Survey.

The 4Leaf concept was designed in 2009, presented in our book (Healthy Eating, Healthy World) in 2011, and trademarked in 2013. The 4Leaf Survey was developed in 2012 and the online version was launched in 2014 at 4leafsurvey.com. That is also when Cornell University started using it in their eCornell division.

AZ jpg Book Ad3. Our 4Leaf book. Intended primarily to help physicians communicate the simple and flexible 4Leaf principles to their patients, the 4Leaf Guide to Vibrant Health was written so that it could be easily digested and fully understood by anyone 16 years of age or older. The book covers the 4Leaf Survey in detail in addition to providing success stories written by the doctor, tips for dining in or eating out, meal planning, a few recipes and tips for saving money–along a plethora of reasons for eating plant-based that go far beyond your own personal health. Book Preview (For quantity discounts, contact Jim Hicks jmh@4leafglobal.com)

4. 4Leaf goes international. The 4Leaf Survey is now available in five languages: English, French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. We’re working on the German version and hope to add other languages soon. See them all at 4Leaf Survey Forms. While the online survey is only available in English at the moment, it can still be used internationally by following the method described below.

flagglobe5. Using this NEW online survey feature. The online version at 4leafsurvey.com will now compute your numerical 4Leaf score (on a scale from -44 to +44) and will also let you know at what 4Leaf level we estimate that you are now eating. After seeing that information, you should choose the “Full Report” (for that level) which will be emailed to you.

Ideally, you should print a one-page copy of the survey (in your language) before taking the online survey. Then, as you take the survey at 4leafsurvey.com, simply circle your responses on your printed form. This way, you will have a record of your answers, which will be helpful while reviewing the “Full Report” for your level which will be emailed to you. That report will refer to your answers on certain questions and will advise how you can improve your score–and your health. The online survey is only in English at this time. If you’re taking it in a different language, the printed version can be used to follow along with the English version on your screen.

Kids can have fun taking the survey and sharing it with friends.
