Hillary describes Bill as “open-minded vegan” to Colbert

To end the confusion about the former president’s diet

Dr. Sanjay Gupta with President Clinton---scene from "The Last Heart Attack."

Dr. Sanjay Gupta with President Clinton—scene from “The Last Heart Attack.”

I never thought that I would hear Secretary Clinton use the word “vegan” to describe the diet of anyone in her family–certainly not until after the election. Because, as I have often said, “She knows that this country is not ready for a vegan in the White House–even if that vegan is the first gentleman.”

So, on April 18 of this year, I was stunned to hear Mrs. Clinton answering candidly a question posed by Stephen Colbert on the Late Show. Take a look for yourself during the first minute of this 4-minute video:

Stephen Colbert Interviews Hillary Clinton At Carnegie Deli

NY Times LogoBack to my statement about this country not being ready to have a vegan in the White House. Could it be that just the mention of the word vegan by a leading presidential candidate could cause her to lose her polling lead against big time steak merchant, Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee?

Maybe so. Consider these statements from a New York Times Op-Ed piece by Thomas Edsall this morning:

In theory, Donald Trump is eminently beatable. His negative ratings are stratospheric. He is reckless, ignorant of rudimentary policy matters and all too ready to speak without forethought or deliberation.

Still, as we near the close of the primary season, Hillary Clinton has somehow succeeded in turning the election into a close contest that she could conceivably lose. She retains key advantages in areas where Trump is vulnerable, but she has also ceded ground to him on the visceral terrain of nativism and anti-immigrant fervor, of a yearning for a return to the days of America’s unquestioned global pre-eminence.

White HouseSo am I planning to vote for Clinton? My answer is that I prefer to keep politics out of this article but will tell you that I am in that majority of Americans who find neither candidate particularly attractive this year. Having said that, when it comes to my quest to promote a world-wide shift to plant-based eating, there are many advantages to having a vegan first gentleman in charge of the kitchen at The White House.

Maybe he will improve on the plant-based initiatives of his predecessor, Michelle Obama and actually promote a diet that reverses heart disease and diabetes–a whole food, plant-based diet. Maybe he will even publish a White House 4Leaf Cookbook, create videos of himself cooking delicious, heart healthy meals–chock full of whole, plant-based foods.

But what about those rumors of late that Bill has drifted away from the healthy way of eating that he learned from Esselstyn, Ornish and Campbell? This fairly recent 5-minute interview with Bill Clinton (December 2015) says otherwise:

Also in the news back in February of this year while he was campaigning in Las Vegas; from the Politico article, more proof that our former president is still practicing an almost vegan lifestyle, admitting that his doctor advises him to eat fish from time to time.

Bill Clinton perusing the vegan menu at the Simply Pure restaurant in Las Vegas

Bill Clinton perusing the vegan menu at the Simply Pure restaurant in Las Vegas

“I am not alone!” Clinton exclaimed with delight as he walked into the vegan eatery. “This is amazing. I love this place.”

Excited to discuss the vegan diet he adopted in the wake of his heart troubles, Clinton said the lifestyle “changed my life. I might not be around if I hadn’t ‘become a vegan. It’s great.”

Back to the advantages of having a “vegan first gentleman.” Just as with Michelle Obama, if someone is living in The White House, he/she wields a great deal of influence around the world, whether they are president or not. Also consider for a moment what would happen if Bill Clinton became fully enlightened to the power of plant-based eating to combat the host of sustainability issues facing our world today.

Love him or hate him, millions of people will listen to what former president Bill Clinton has to say about food choices–and their consequences to our health, our environment and out future as a species. So take your pick:

“Meat-Peddling Donald”

Trump Steaks

OR

“Plant-Eating Bill”

Bill Clinton Vegan AARP

The Choice is Yours–And Mine

Just in case you missed it, here is a 9-minute video (September 2010) of former president Bill Clinton on CNN with Wolf Blitzer, who also interviews Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn and Dr. Dean Ornish. If the Clinton’s move back to The White House, many millions of people will be seeing this video and others like it. FYI, I love the way Dr. Esselstyn chooses to stress common ground truths with Dr. Ornish instead of turning the interview into a debate.

The Most Important Topic in the History of Humanity

The title of my presentation on 5-6-16 at the College of the Holy Cross

Slide01Special handout. At my request, two days prior to my presentation, the students were given the following 4-page document about climate change. The professor sent me a summary of their questions prior to my presentation on May 6. Click here to view that 4-pager.

My presentation in the classroom began by asking those college students five questions:

  1. Do you care about your health, your weight and the way you look and feel?
  2. Do you like saving money on things that you buy?
  3. Do you care about the environment, biodiversity and sustainability?
  4. Do you believe that climate change is primarily driven by human activity?
  5. Do you care about the future of civilization and our future as a species?

Building on Common Ground. After getting a 100% unanimous response to those five questions, for the next twenty minutes, I proceeded to build on that agreement in a way that would help my audience become healthier, save money, add more meaning to their lives and become far better stewards of the planet.Slide04

So during the time remaining, I made it clear why my talk lived up to it’s title; explaining that our food choices are without a doubt the most important topic in the history of humanity–because our future as a species is riding on those choices.

By shortening the formal part of my presentation to twenty minutes, there was lots of time remaining for Q & A and discussion. To get the ball rolling in the Q & A period, I asked them for their opinion regarding my title. Not a single one disagreed, although some of their questions signaled that they weren’t ready to do all that I was advocating. But I do believe that my talk will make a difference for the better in many of their lives. The main part of my presentation included these twenty-two questions:

(Click here to view a pdf of all PPT slides in presentation)

  1. Did you know that, on a per calorie basis, on average, foods made from animals require over ten times as much land, water and energy as do plant-based foods? Consider the implications here in terms of world hunger, water shortage and energy consumption.Slide05
  2. Did you know that it requires about two football fields worth of land to feed just ONE person the S.A.D.?
  3. Did you know that there are only 6 billion football fields of arable land on Earth? So if everyone tried to eat the SAD,  we could only feed 3 billion people–and the other 4 billion would starve to death.
  4. Did you know that FOURTEEN plant-eating people could be fed on those two football fields worth of land? Or we could feed all seven billion of us with just one billion football field, freeing up five billion football fields worth of land for reforestation–almost seven billion acres, an area about the size of the USA lower 48 and China, COMBINED.
  5. Did you know that you don’t need to eat ANY animal protein to be healthy?
  6. Did you know that you can get all the protein (and all other nutrients except B12 and vitamin D) from plant-based foods?
  7. Did you know that you can save up to $5,000/person each year, by replacing most of your animal-based food with plant-based food?Slide09
  8. Did you know that there are now many meat and dairy analog products that are high in protein, cost less money and deliver a taste and texture that most people can’t tell the difference from the environmentally hazardous animal foods that they replace.
  9. Did you know that we have been destroying an average of 30 million acres of rainforest every year since 1970? (THE LUNGS OF THE EARTH)
  10. Did you know that 80% of global deforestation is for the grazing of livestock or to grow feed for livestock?
  11. Did you know that deforestation carries a double whammy when it comes to climate change? Virgin rainforest absorbs VAST amounts of CO2. Destroying that forest eliminates that absorption, while releasing enormous amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere as the forest is burned.
  12. Did you know livestock contributes significantly more to climate change than ALL of the cars, trucks, busses, airplanes, trains and ships in the world?Slide12
  13. Did you know that scientists agree that the tipping point for climate change will happen between 2017 and 2020—if it hasn’t already happened?
  14. Did you know that replacing most of our animal foods with plant-based foods is the ONLY pragmatic way remaining for reversing climate change? What about replacing fossil fuels with renewables, you might ask?
  15. Did you know that it would take at least twenty years and $18 trillion to replace fossil fuels with renewables? Fact: we don’t have the twenty years or the $18 trillion and the process today is nowhere near the pace we’d need.
  16. Did you know that half of the world’s population depends on water in fossil underground aquifers (that cannot be recharged)
  17. Did you know that we can learn to live without oil, coal and natural gas—but we cannot live for more than a few days without water?
  18. Did you know that we’re also approaching tipping points in our oceans (THE HEART AND ARTERIES OF THE EARTH)Slide15
  19. Did you know that the coral reefs are disappearing around the world and that they may ALL be completely gone by 2050?
  20. In addition did you know that our oceans are suffering from acidification, warming, dead zones and rapidly declining biodiversity?
  21. Did you know that most of the problems in our oceans are driven by our animal food choices, including fish and shrimp? Little known fact: for every pound of shrimp harvested from the oceans, there are 26 pounds of by-catch: marine life like dolphin and starfish that are killed and discarded in the process.
  22. Did you know that our food choices are the ONLY primary drivers of all these issues that can be changed quickly? Anyone who chooses to switch to a 100% plant-based diet, can literally do it overnight if he/she chooses.

Slide44

Reaction from the class. At the end of my presentation, there were lots of questions and an enthusiastic discussion–and not a single student disagreed about our 21st century food choices being the most important topic in the history of humanity.

Finally, Dr. Axelson made my day when he forwarded me some unsolicited feedback from one of the students:

Hi Professor Axelson,

I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed Jim Hicks’s presentation today and that I thought it was really inspiring to see a man with such compassion. He seems like an awesome guy to know. After class, I immediately called my father and told him I am coming home with a power point in efforts of transitioning our family to a WFPBD and to show them “the big picture.” Again, I just wanted to voice that I really appreciated that Jim took his time to come in today, and that this was an awesome class today!

Human “gas” emissions and climate change

A reader asked this question yesterday…

Dear Mr. Hicks, Since we are also animals, how much of the green house gas problem is caused by the human life cycle. Linda

Dear Linda,

Promoting health, hope and harmony on planet Earth

Thanks for your message; I have never been asked that question before, but I will take a stab at it.

As I see it, the “human life cycle” in terms of gases that come out both ends of our bodies, is not the problem with humans as far as GHGs are concerned. The problem is the way we CHOOSE to live, beginning with what we eat.

True, gases from our lungs and bowels do contribute to GHG, but probably account for less than 1% of the human induced GHG. The other 99% comes from our lifestyle of high energy consumption, extremely inefficient homes, overconsumption of STUFF, our love affair with traveling by car and airplane—and of course, our grossly unsustainable habit of eating animals.

CO2 concentrations since 1970--from NOAA

CO2 concentrations since 1970–from NOAA. Feb 2015 level was 399.88. Feb 2016 level was 403.28. Obviously, we’re not doing very well.

If all 7.4 billion of us humans were eating a plant-based diet, living in high occupancy, efficient buildings, consuming far less non-recyclable STUFF and primarily traveling by rail instead of air and highway—we would be very close to living in harmony with nature. Having said that, the optimal population level for humans on this planet is probably less than five billion and, of course, we’re on track to reach twice as many by 2050.

As such, we have become the “infestation of planet Earth” as we remain oblivious to the inability of Mother Nature to continue supporting our highly destructive, wasteful and unsustainable lifestyle. In summary, there are many problems associated with how we have chosen to live, and only one of those problems can be changed quickly—our food choices.

J. Morris Hicks, promoting health, hope and harmony on planet Earth

J. Morris Hicks, promoting health, hope and harmony on planet Earth

And as I continue to say on a regular basis, if we can cut our animal-food consumption by 80% within five years, then we would likely buy ourselves enough time (at least several decades) to tackle all of those other problems like overpopulation, overconsumption and our dependence on fossil fuels. Hopefully, no one will ask us to stop breathing to help stop climate change.

Linda, I hope this helps. Here are links to a few of my blogs that might help further:

My shortest blogpost EVER–A new “private” page for Leaders.

Of course I want everyone to read it; that’s why I called it “private.”

J. Morris Hicks, promoting health, hope and harmony on planet Earth.

Yesterday, I began preparing a “Harmony Project” Excel spreadsheet. So far it contains three separate pages: Leaders, Messengers and Funders. During the course of adding names to each list, I began thinking primarily about leadership and how we can attract the kind of powerful leader who has a reputation for being able to handle almost any challenge–regardless of difficulty, magnitude or complexity.

As I started writing a few hours ago, I began thinking about how prominent business or national leaders like Elon Musk, Angela Merkel, Michael Bloomberg or Jeff Bezos might react to my message. This “Private Page. For Leaders Only” is now prominently displayed on the homepage of my website at hpjmh.com. I did that so that everyone could easily tell their network how to find the “little page with the big surprise.”

All you have to do is tell people to go to hpjmh.com and look for this link at the top. You can remember it as an acronym for “healthy planet” and my initials.

Private Page. For Leaders Only.

One more thing. My online interview with Margot Freitag went “on the air” today and will be up for several more days. It has driven almost 500 new visitors to our 4leafprogram.com website in just the past few hours. Normal traffic is less than 50 people.

Earth Day should be EVERY day!

Because we’re running out of time to re-establish “harmony” with nature.

Robert Goodland, World Bank environmental specialist

Robert Goodland, World Bank environmental specialist, concluded that a shift to plant-based eating was essential for our own survival.

Robert Goodland (World Bank environmental specialist) concluded shortly before his death in 2013, that the all-important climate change tipping point would be passed between 2017 and 2020 unless drastic action was taken. Sadly, in the three years since his death, almost no effective action has been taken–and we’re getting very close to 2017.

Most disturbing of all is that our world leaders, our most prominent environmentalists and the scientific community are not even aware of the leading cause of our most urgent ecological issues. Indeed the oceans, the rainforest, biodiversity and climate change are all seriously out of control, yet we hear no one talking about the urgent need to replace most (if not all) of our animal-based calories with greener, healthier, plant-based alternatives.

Oceans. The heart and arteries of the Earth.

Oceans. The heart and arteries of the Earth.

Long before his death, Goodland concluded that a deliberate shift to plant-based eating was the ONLY pragmatic solution to climate change. Yet, the world did not listen then–and is not listening now. This situation reminds me of a quote that appears as the beginning of the new Food Choices documentary:

The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge. — Stephen Hawking

Our experts all think they’re right. I truly believe that our world leaders, environmentalists and scientists are highly confident that they are taking the right steps to save our environment. The problem is that 95% of them could never take a plant-based solution seriously–because of the almost universal belief (throughout the world) in the “protein myth,” that we all NEED to eat animal protein to be healthy.

Rainforest. The lungs of the Earth.

Rainforest. The lungs of the Earth.

The Bottom Line. The “protein myth” must be dispelled, and it must be dispelled soon if we’re going to have a fighting chance of saving the oceans, rainforest and ourselves from the worst effects of climate change.

I have been writing and speaking about this topic for five years, but am sad to report that things continue to worsen–and they will keep worsening unless we address our top three problems. In the words of the great W. Edwards Deming, we need three things to solve any major problem:

Leadership. Leadership. Leadership.

Our top leaders must soon understand the power of plant foods to promote human health, solve world hunger and save our ecosystem. The greatest win-win-win in history.

Our top leaders must soon understand the power of plant foods to promote human health, solve world hunger and save our ecosystem. The greatest win-win-win in history.

Identifying and “enlightening” the kind of leadership the world needs is central to these next few links that outline what must happen if our oceans, rainforest, civilization and ultimately our human species is to survive:

Fifteen months ago, in January of 2015, I posted a blog about an alarming conclusion  published in the journal Science: “At the rate things are going, the Earth in the coming decades could cease to be a safe operating space for human beings.” The first sentence in the paper reads:

There is an urgent need for a new paradigm that integrates the continued development of human societies and the maintenance of the Earth system (ES) in a resilient and accommodating state.

J. Morris Hicks, promoting health, hope and harmony on planet Earth.

J. Morris Hicks, promoting health, hope and harmony on planet Earth.

In closing. If there was an “urgent need” in January of 2015, there is an EXTREMELY urgent need now. My “Harmony Project” mentioned above outlined the simple, but difficult, process of moving the ever-growing human population back to living in harmony with nature.

It’s now time to ratchet up the urgency with regards to the identification and enlightenment of the competent, internationally respected leadership we need to make harmony with nature a reality for the first time since we hit the one billion population mark in 1800.

In order for us to recreate that original state of perpetual harmony, we must make every day EARTH DAY indefinitely. There has never been anything more important in the history of humanity.

As for the significance of Earth Day as it now stands, my observation is that the media gives it lip service at best. This morning on CBS, I don’t remember any mention of Earth Day in the entire program. It seemed like well over half the telecast (as with every other network today) was focused on the passing of Prince, the well-loved entertainer.

This bear represents the "elephant in the room," CLIMATE CHANGE--the runaway problem that exacerbates all others.

FREE viewing of “Food Choices” documentary

April 21-24 ONLY

Michal Siewierski on the job

Michal Siewierski on the job

In October of 2014, I was interviewed by Michal Siewierski (producer of Food Choices) right after Dr. T. Colin Campbell at the Center for Nutrition Studies in Ithaca, NY. Eighteen months later, on April 6 (two weeks ago), I attended the international premiere of this powerful new documentary in Chicago.

I made a special one-day trip from New York to join the producer, his family and friends for the occasion, and I am glad that I did. A prime motivator for me was that this is the VERY first movie in which I have been a member of the cast.

Now you have the chance to watch this movie for free; until midnight on Friday 4-22-16. Just visit the Food Choices website below and watch the two-minute trailer or you can go directly to watching the full-length movie by clicking on the Watch the Film NOW link. In that case, you will be emailed a link and password to commence your viewing.

In his new movie, Michal covers a plethora of reasons why all humans should be eating plant-based foods–beginning with human health, a topic that prominently features whole food, plant-based (WFPB) luminaries like T. Colin Campbell, John McDougall, Pam Popper and others. On the environmental side, I was honored to be included–along with my friend and colleague, Richard Oppenlander, who also made the trip to Chicago for the premiere.

Enjoy the movie and share with people you love!

Food. Health. Planet. A message of HOPE.

That is the title of my upcoming presentation in Texas.

J. Morris Hicks, promoting health, hope and harmony on planet Earth.

J. Morris Hicks, promoting health, hope and harmony on planet Earth.

I am speaking this weekend in Austin and have just finished up my PowerPoint presentation. As I state on my website’s “Speaking” page, I could possibly be the only person in the world who is actively promoting a simple, “big picture” solution to the most serious problem in the history of humanity–our food choices in the 21st century. From this website’s speaking page:

Many authors speak about promoting health through diet, a handful speak about the environmental impacts of our diet and even fewer speak about a workable solution to our current environmental dilemma that threatens our very existence as a species. J. Morris Hicks may very well be the ONLY author in the world who speaks passionately about all three.

This dearth of leadership regarding the world’s biggest problem is unconscionable–which is why I have made this my number one priority: doing all that I can to help powerful leaders everywhere understand the urgency of what’s at stake–so much so that a handful of them will join me in making this issue their #1 priority.

In my mind, it all boils down to LEADERSHIP. My twenty years experience as an executive recruiter has prepared me for sorting out our global leadership dilemma, defined here:

There is not a single prominent leader in the world whose primary focus is on the immense environmental damage driven by our grossly unsustainable lifestyle—much less one who is leading a team to launch the urgent global initiative necessary to give us a fighting chance to bring the human species back to living in harmony with nature–before it’s too late.

Known as the lungs of the Earth, our precious rainforest that is systematically being destroyed by humans.

Known as the lungs of the Earth, our precious rainforest that is systematically being destroyed by humans.

How do we identify such a leader? As an executive recruiter (corporate headhunter) my clients routinely asked me to identify and recruit executives who met their extensive job specifications.

Sometimes, after searching the world, there was not a single individual that had ALL of what the client was seeking in their new executive. When that happened, we set about recruiting the candidate (s) who has an abundance of the most important “qualifications,” those skills and qualities that cannot be learned on the job.

That’s what we have now. At the end of the Austin presentation below, I have listed the photos of 12 highly recognizable potential leaders, all of whom enjoy a positive global reputation. They are all examples of the kind of powerful leadership needed. Someone you know may be able to help us reach one of these leaders–or another leader who has a similar resumé.

Only ONE of the twelve candidates in my list has been fully enlightened regarding the singular importance of our food choices in the 21st century. But, with an open mind, the other 11 could gain that “enlightenment” in less than a week. Importantly, they all possess the four qualifications that cannot be gained in a week—or a decade for that matter. Each one on my list:

Notice how the growth of human population parallels the destruction of a cumulative 5 billion acres of forest.

Notice how the growth of human population parallels the destruction of a cumulative 5 billion acres of forest.

  1. Enjoys a positive international reputation for leadership and integrity
  2. Has demonstrated a sincere interest in the environment
  3. Is well known and respected around the world
  4. Either has the wealth and/or the access to the kinds of money that it will take to quickly change the way the world thinks about food.

The bottom line. There is not a single person in the world (with the above resumé) who is fully enlightened about the crucial importance of our food choices AND has made changing the world’s eating habits his/her #1 priority. And, as I explain in my presentation, it only takes ONE of this kind of special leader to generate a significant shift toward plant-based eating around the world—particularly in the five regions where over 70% of the meat is being eaten: China, Europe, USA, Brazil and Russia.

My presentation includes information about what our lifestyle is doing to the major elements of nature that give us life: the oceans and the rainforest.

Every year, our highly destructive and wasteful lifestyle is inflicting major damage on the natural environment that gives us life: the oceans, soil, atmosphere, biodiversity and rainforest.

Just imagine what one powerful, well-financed leader can get done–with the assistance of credible plant-based “messengers” like Martina Navratilova, Bill Clinton, Venus & Serena Williams, Tony Gonzalez, Carl Lewis, James Cameron, Ellen DeGeneres, Gary Player, Leonardo DiCaprio, Al Gore and many others.

As we approach critical environmental tipping points (we may have already passed some), it’s imperative that we take our life-saving message to the billions of people who are eating the most meat–urging them to dramatically change their food choices: by eating far less meat and far more plants. I am convinced that our ecosystem, our civilization and our future as a species is riding on those critical food choices.

This powerful message of hope is included on the final slide:

A Vision of Harmony

As people everywhere begin to learn the complete truth about their food choices, millions will start replacing most, if not all, of their animal-based calories with healthier and “greener,” plant-based alternatives. As we begin working on the “demand” side of the equation, markets will quickly respond, people will begin getting healthier, the cost of healthcare will plummet, water will become more plentiful, trees can be planted on the freed-up land and our fragile ecosystem will begin to heal.

Harmony

Eventually, we must also deal with overpopulation, over-consumption and the excessive burning of fossil fuels–but those tasks will take many decades, if not centuries. Taking URGENT action NOW with our food choices can buy us the time we need to address them all.

As a former engineer, business executive, strategy consultant and corporate headhunter, I feel like I’m working on the most important project in the history of humanity—and that my clients are the children of the world—mine, yours, everyone’s. We cannot let them down! Sincerely, J. Morris (Jim) Hicks
