Multiple Sclerosis. Is it related to diet?

Incomparable!

Eating the right food helps prevent most diseases.

As we learned from the Forks Over Knives movie, up to 80 percent of our health care dollars are driven by what we eat; and in this blog, we’ve written about many of them. But today is the first time we’ve mentioned multiple sclerosis. And according to Dr. Roy Swank, Dr. T. Colin Campbell and other reputable scientists, it turns out that once again cow’s milk is one of the culprits that promotes this terrible disease. Beginning on page 194 of The China Study, Dr. Campbell presents a wealth of information, beginning with:

Prevalence on the Y axis, cow's milk consumption on the X axis. No mystery here.

Even though there is widespread medical and scientific interest in this disease, most authorities claim to know very little about causes or cures.

Major multiple sclerosis Internet Web sites all claim that the disease is an enigma. They generally list genetics, viruses and environmental factors as possibly playing roles in the development of this disease but pay almost no heed to a possible role for diet. This is peculiar considering the wealth of intriguing information on the effects of food that is available from reputable research reports. Once again cow’s milk appears to play an important role.

There are several graphs; among them, one showing the clear correlation between the incidence of MS and the consumption of cow’s milk.

Death rate from MS is clearly associated to diet; with meat and dairy diets having a much higher rate.

This work is remarkable. To follow people for thirty-four years is an exceptional demonstration of perseverance and dedication. Moreover, if this were a study testing a potential drug, these findings would make any pharmaceutical manufacturer jingle the coins in his or her pocket. Swank’s first results were published more than a half century ago, then again, and again, and again  for the next forty years.

Dr. John McDougall, one of the five MD's featured in our book.

As we have reported many times on this blog, we find that our optimal diet of mostly whole plants promotes our health and prevents or reverses most of the maladies that plague us. One diet for every problem doesn’t’ sound very exciting, but it sure is refreshingly simple—albeit maybe not very interesting reading. Dr. Campbell discovered that fact when he was turned down by a number of potential publishers who didn’t think that simple “one diet fits all” was marketable.

What does Dr. John McDougall have to say about MS? Quite a bit, as a matter of fact. You may want to wait until Sunday afternoon to watch his free 67-minute video:  “Diet and Multiple Sclerosis.” This a great, comprehensive video featuring the legendary work of Dr. Roy Swank. Dr. McDougall is the primary teacher of his great work. You really should take the time to watch this sometime soon.

Attention animal lovers everywhere; PETA likes our book!

Win a chance for a free copy — See PETA link below the video.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. It’s not surprising that they like our book; that’s because it promotes the end of the 100 year era when human beings inflicted incalculable pain and suffering on hundreds of billions of innocent animals. And once we dispel the protein myth, caring people everywhere will realize that we can end much of that unnecessary suffering by simply adopting a plant-based diet.

I have concluded that we humans are responsible for over 90% of ALL animal suffering in the world. That’s because, for the millions of species of creatures living in nature, I simply don’t believe there is that much suffering. They are all part of the all-important biodiversity of our planet and they all live in harmony with nature. And while living in harmony, they only suffer for that brief moment at the time when their natural predator does what he is supposed to do.

Unlike all those creatures, we’re not living in harmony and we are not the natural predator of the 60 billion animals that we kill worldwide for our dinner tables.

In our book, there is only one chapter dedicated to animal suffering; Chapter 7 and it is appropriately titled “Hell On Earth.” Many people tell me that they have trouble reading that chapter; that’s because 98% of people everywhere really do care about animals—and the revelations in that chapter are disturbing for them.

Not wanting my audiences to be uncomfortable, when I lecture, I only devote one brief slide to this topic. It is a picture of an adorable baby chick standing beside it’s shell. Then, I talk about what happens to male chicks in an egg factory. Since only females can produce eggs, the baby male chick is, shall we say, disposable. And that’s exactly what happens to them—without any thought whatsoever that they are sentient beings.

Here’s what happens to 250 million baby male chicks every year in just the United States.  There are two methods of “disposition” reported in our book—the plastic bag or the macerator. In the former, the newborn male chicks are just dropped in the bag where they smother to death with hundreds of their brothers. In the latter, they are thrown into  a macerator—well, you know what happens then (Think wood-chipper).

What about pigs? How is the life of our future pizza toppings? Do you really want to know? Take a look at this video. It is difficult to watch, but if everyone who continues to eat meat was forced to watch it, the meat consumption would drop sharply. I was unable to make it all the way through–with the sound on; maybe it would help if I had turned off the squealing. It’s less than 3 minutes.

Warning. This is not the idyllic Old Macdonald’s Farm.

Livestock and global warming — even worse than we thought

Yet millions of Americans don’t even believe it exists.

The London Bridge is now in Dr. Don’s listening area in Arizona

A few weeks ago I appeared on a radio show in Arizona with Dr. Don Wagner. Having recently read our book, he was excited to find so much “big picture” information about the food we eat and the consequences thereof. He seemed to be particularly interested in global warming and asked several question on that sometimes controversial topic.

When he started taking calls about midway through the one hour show, one of his regular listeners called in and said something like this:

Dr. Don, when you start saying that global warming is caused by what we’re eating, you’re going to start losing a lot of listeners. This is really bad for your show. Are you crazy? Everyone knows that all of that climate change garbage is nothing but a hoax. Can’t believe you’re buying into that crap. What have you been smoking?

Not exactly the type of question that leads to a sincere discussion. But that Arizona listener served one purpose for me; he served as a reminder of just how far we have to go before the average citizen is going to believe anything bad about their sirloin, pork chops and fried chicken.

The 2006 U.N. Report

A little background. It was actually the global warming topic that got me started down the road of activism in 2006. That was the year the United Nations produced a 400 page report entitled Livestock’s Long Shadow — a report on the vast amount of environmental damage that is caused by the raising of livestock.

The international scientists estimated that 18 percent of annual worldwide greenhouse gas emissions are attributable to cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats, camels, pigs, and poultry. Incredibly, according to the U.N. Report, the livestock sector produces about 35 percent more greenhouse gases than ALL of transportation combined — all cars, trucks, planes, ships, trains and motorcycles. So, what did Al Gore have to say about livestock in his Inconvenient Truth movie that same year? Absolutely nothing.

How does a man who was almost elected president of the USA win the Nobel Prize for a documentary about global warming—and fail to even mention the number one cause? I have been asking that question for years but have never heard an acceptable answer.

But it was that inconvenient “omission” that launched my new career. I knew at that moment that we simply could not trust our authorities in government to level with us about what is really happening in this world. One month after seeing that movie, I launched my Harmony Earth website, which later led to writing a book and then launching this blog in February of 2011. Thank you Mr. Gore.

As for livestock, it gets worse. There is newer information by Dr. Robert Goodland and Jeff Anhang that suggests that the livestock sector is responsible for a much greater portion of those greenhouse gases than was reported by the U.N. From the WorldWatch Institute website:

Dr. Goodland and Anhang report that livestock and their by-products actually account for at least 32.6 billion tons of carbon dioxide per year, or 51 percent of annual worldwide GHG emissions.

So who  are those guys? From the report, “Robert Goodland retired as lead environmental adviser at the World Bank Group after serving there for 23 years. In 2008 he was awarded the first Coolidge Memorial Medal by the IUCN for outstanding contributions to environmental conservation. Jeff Anhang is a research officer and environmental specialist at the World Bank Group’s International Finance Corporation, which provides private-sector financing and advice in developing countries.”

The Bottom Line. Most educated citizens of the Western world truly believe that global warming is a serious problem and that much of it is caused by human activities. But even the best and the brightest still don’t understand that ALL of the global warming caused by livestock is completely unnecessary.

Since an estimated 95% of the scientists of the world still believe that we “need” to eat animal protein to be healthy, the environment-friendly, plant-based food model for humans never even makes it to the table for consideration. My Project “Harmony” is aimed at dispelling that “protein myth” and thereby freeing up the greatest minds in the world to leverage the power of plant-based eating to quite possibly save the planet.

Five Minute Video featuring Dr. Goodland’s Report

More reading and viewing for your Sunday afternoon.

An exceptionally well-done 2009 movie produced in France; has been seen by millions around the world, but not nearly enough Americans. Features aerial footage in 54 countries.

Finally, for your week-end viewing pleasure, I have once again provided two very important movies. Just in case you haven’t seem them yet, get yourself some popcorn (or celery), and watch these great world-changing documentaries with your family (free). They are about 1.5 hours each and are likely to leave you feeling differently about the role of the human race on our precious planet.
