From Marilu to Cape Cod. A very good week.

And the Kaiser Permanente paper continues to be the big news.

Kaiser Permanente logoUNPRECEDENTED BIG NEWS. Plant-Based for ALL Patients! Says Kaiser Permanente (America’s largest health provider). For a PDF of the powerful plant-based article in KP’s Spring JournalClick Here. It’s really a HUGE deal when our largest health provider is advising its 15,000 physicians to:

“[C]onsider recommending a plant-based diet to all their patients…encouraging whole, plant-based foods and discouraging meats, dairy products, and eggs as well as all refined and processed foods.”

The above news blurb is now posted in a prominent position on my home page—and it may stay there for a long time. hpjmh.com

Hello Marilu. It was the above news that prompted actress and health-enthusiast Marilu Henner to contact me last week about being on her show. She read my blog and gave me a call.

Then the next day, on May 31, I was honored to be the featured guest on the The Marilu Show that is broadcast via internet from Los Angeles on weekdays to an international audience through Genesis Communications. You can listen to our one-hour plus segment by clicking here.

As you may know, Marilu Henner has been helping people take charge of their health with plant-based eating for several decades. She brings a wealth of knowledge, energy and passion to the topic. It was a thrill for me to be on her show.

BenBellaHappy Birthday BenBella. Last week, my publisher (who is also Colin Campbell’s publisher) hosted their tenth anniversary party at a bowling facility in Brooklyn that they took over for the evening. Not only did I get to visit with Colin and Karen Campbell, but I also got to meet the entire BenBella team (in person) that published our book in 2011.

All of the guests left the event with copies of some of BenBella’s most recent books—which included Dr. Campbell’s new book, WHOLE, that is already on the New York Times bestseller list. One other guest that I should mention is Caryn Hartglass—for it was she who facilitated my getting to meet Dr. Campbell, Dr. Esselstyn and Dr. Fuhrman at three different EarthSave events in NYC almost eight years ago. It was great to be able to thank Caryn again personally.

Finally, Cape Cod. My good friend Joanne Irwin invited me to attend a health fair on Cape Cod, hosted by the fabulous Emerald Physicians medical group. The Food Nurse (Lisa Gardiner) and I hosted a booth where we administered 100 4Leaf Surveys and sold dozens of books.

But most importantly, we got to meet the Emerald founder, Dr. Cormac Coyle and the clinic’s foremost proponent of plant-based nutrition for fighting cancer, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, etc. This man knows his stuff:

Meet Dr. Kumara Sidhartha

I have reached out to Dr. Sidhartha to see if he might like to be listed on my MD Help page that features “plant-savvy” medical doctors who offer telephone consultations to patients all over the world.

The Big News? The Kaiser news is one of the most powerful, world-changing stories I have ever heard. But why have you not heard about it from Brian Williams, Diane Sawyer or Scott Pelley? Why don’t you ask them?

The real reason is that they get paid by the food industry that has made us the sickest nation on Earth. And they don’t want to upset the old apple cart. Maintaining the status quo and confusion over clarity is the name of the game in Big Food, Big Pharma and the Big Money they represent to Big Media.

PBNHC.COM Finally, I want to end this blog with an ad for the first ever North American Plant-Based Nutrition Healthcare Conference. If your own doctor is not familiar with the power of plant-based nutrition AND has no interest in learning, then it might be time to find yourself a new doctor.

About J. Morris Hicks

A former strategic management consultant and senior corporate executive with Ralph Lauren in New York, J. Morris Hicks has always focused on the "big picture" when analyzing any issue. In 2002, after becoming curious about our "optimal diet," he began a study of what we eat from a global perspective ---- discovering many startling issues and opportunities along the way. In addition to an MBA and a BS in Industrial Engineering, he holds a certificate in plant-based nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, where he has also been a member of the board of directors since 2012. Having concluded that our food choices hold the key to the sustainability of our civilization, he has made this his #1 priority---exploring all avenues for influencing humans everywhere to move back to the natural plant-based diet for our species.

The Kaiser announcement, while welcome, should be treated with caution since many similar announcements have failed to move the masses toward healthier lifestyle choices. Two additional regrets come to mind. Kaiser insurance is not available nationwide and the announcement offers no economic incentive. It is the rare marketer who does not offer some discount to encourage participation. Kaiser offers none. To get a meaningful portion of the public’s attention Kaiser needs to put it’s money where it’s mouth is and offer a well-deserved discount to prospective clients who adopt healthy lifestyle choices that will undoubtedly save the company many millions of dollars. Crocodile tears will not be enough to do more than cause a temporary miniscule ripple in the wave of unhealthy behavior sweeping the planet.

    Hi, Jim,
I’ve been listening to your interview with Mary Lou Henner. Great job! You certainly are making a difference in people’s lives. So glad you were able to participate in Emerald’s Health Fair, and meet their progressive team here on Cape Cod. Viva was fabulous and well attended. It’s always a high to meet like-minded, passionate individuals who are spreading the message of health and wellness through whole, plant based nutrition. Drs. Coyle and Sidhartha are one in a million; thrilled you were able to connect with each. Until, take care and keep the faith!!

I’m sorry I missed your appearance on Marliu. I’ll have to give it a listen later this week! Congratulations. I wanted to let you know that just eating 4 Leaf was not helping me meet my weight loss goals, my fault, not the program’s fault. I did not fully understanding how each component of the 4 Leaf affected each other and once I did it helped me greatly. I joined weightwatchers online and followed a mostly 4 Leaf program while doing it. I’m still doing it. Since February 1, 2013 I’ve lost 18 lbs. I learned that brown rice is good for me but not tons of it and to also be careful on the portions of beans. Hummus however, which I had been avoiding due to high fat content, especially Cedar Garlic Lovers which is the lowest in fat I have found, has become my new best friend. Again 4 Leaf has been a great life changing experience for me, especially now that I’m portioning properly. I’m the healthiest I have been in many years. Thank you for continuing to spread the good word about plant based nutrition!
