Meat consumption down? “Renewables” surging?

Things must be getting better.—Not so fast my friend!

CBS NewsThe Evening News. Red meat consumption going down, great news about renewable sources of energy, less disease and fewer hungry people in the world than ever before. That’s what we hear on the news—so things must be getting better, right? WRONG!

Meat Consumption Data. I just ran the numbers from a census.gov report (see link below) comparing the global consumption of all kinds of meat: beef, veal, pork and chicken. My findings, comparing the data for 2010 to the previous year.

  1. Total meat consumption in the USA went down by 36,000 metric tons (2009-2010)
  2. That is ALL the good news there is on this page!
  3. Total meat consumption in Europe went UP by 224,000 metric tons.
  4. Total meat consumption in CHINA went UP just over 2 million metric tons.
  5. Total net WORLD meat consumption went UP 6.5 million metric tons.
  6. That’s equal to an INCREASE of over 14 billion pounds—in just ONE YEAR.

Red meatOur modest reductions in the USA are being wiped out by HUGE increases in the developing world. And there is no end in sight.

  • Total world meat appetite: 237 million metric tons = 521 BILLION pounds.
  • That works out to over 72 pounds for each of our 7.2B people; a number that’s certain to keep climbing as billions of people in the developing world start eating meat for the first time.

My conclusion. After some analysis and extrapolation of the above data for an upcoming speech, here’s what I concluded:

Things are not getting better! For every American who is eating less meat, there are about 100 people in the developing world headed in the other direction. — J. Morris Hicks

Overfishing the bookWhat about fish? Per the same report, the total world catch in 2008 was over 142 million tons. Up 46% from the 1990 number of 98 million tons.

Total global flesh (meat & fish) consumption was roughly 379 million tons in 2010 and is almost certainly much higher today.

Dr. Stephen Emmott reported in his 2013 TEN BILLION that we’ll need to double our production of food in the next 4o years. That will put us close to ONE BILLION TONS of animal/fish flesh by mid-century.

By then, we’ll be torturing 200 billion land animals per year, will have seriously disrupted practically all of the world’s fisheries and will have wiped out what is left of our rainforest to provide land for growing and or feeding those 200 billion innocent animals. When does the madness end?J. Morris Hicks

Will renewables save us from global warming? What about our progress with renewables replacing the consumption of fossil fuel? Even with all the great news about solar, wind and geothermal energy, this graph paints a scoreboard that the average 3rd grader could easily understand. Steady growth since 1950.

The Bottom Line. When you look at the “big picture” of the most important indicators in the world—there is NO GOOD NEWS! As our population, consumption of STUFF, and burning of fossil fuels all continue to escalate—the ONLY solution to saving our ecosystem AND our civilization—is to influence billions of people to begin urgently replacing most of their meat-based calories with healthier, plant-based alternatives.

As we begin working on the “demand” side of the equation, markets will quickly respond, people will begin getting healthier, the cost of healthcare will plummet, water will become more plentiful, trees can be planted on the freed-up land and our fragile ecosystem will begin to heal.

Eventually, we must also deal with overpopulation, over-consumption and the excessive burning of fossil fuels—but those tasks will take many decades, if not centuries. Taking URGENT action NOW with our food choices can buy us the time we need to address them all. — J. Morris Hicks

The answer? Three things. Leadership. Leadership. Leadership.

Easier to change what we eat—than our global economy

But, ultimately, the rules of our global economy must change!

ClimateMarchNewYorkChanging what we eat may buy us the time needed to transform our running-roughshod economy into one that operates in harmony with nature. But changing what we eat will never happen in a big way until we get some powerful, mainstream leaders behind it. And that simply ain’t happening.

In the aftermath of the big Climate Convergence conference at the U.N. and the massive 300,000-person march—I didn’t hear a single mainstream person mention the need to address our food choices. NO ONE! Not the nation’s #1 climate activist, Bill McKibben, no one.

But author Naomi Klein got it right about one thing. “It’s easier to imagine turning down the temperature of the sun,” Ms. Klein said, “than changing the rules governing our economy.” But “these are the choices that we have before us, this is why climate change changes everything,” Ms. Klein said. Further, from the 9-23-14 New York Times (see link below):

In her book, Ms. Klein argues that the root cause of climate change is capitalism, emphasizing that if no profound and radical changes to the system are made, a climate catastrophe is inevitable. “The bottom line is what matters here: Our economic system and our planetary system are now at war,” Ms. Klein writes. “Only one of these sets of rules can be changed, and it’s not the laws of nature.”

And right she is. For the past six months, I have been writing, speaking and blogging about the fact that the rules of our global economy must eventually change. We cannot continue to pursue unlimited consumption of STUFF in a finite world much longer—particularly when we add over 230,000 new people everyday.

We hear a lot about the “green” progress that is being made with wind and solar energy around the world. But when you look at the “big picture” trends regarding the burning of fossil fuels, the stark reality comes into focus. Yesterday, while preparing for an upcoming presentation, I found this simple chart:

world-fossil-fuel-consumption

No matter what progress we’ve made in renewable sources of energy, there have been no savings on the bottom line. In fact, it continues to get worse every year. That’s because while we’re adding windmills and solar panels, we’re also adding more people, consuming more stuff and more people are beginning to eat animal-based foods for the first time. The way I see it, we must find systemic fixes for four critical problems:

  1. Overpopulation and the way we live (still going up about seven million a month)
  2. Overconsumption of STUFF made from finite resources (also steadily rising)
  3. Our dependence on fossil fuels (primarily driven by the first two)
  4. We’re eating the wrong food! (for human health and the health of our ecosystem)

First the Bad News. The first three problems will take many decades, if not centuries to fix.

Leveraging the simple concept of maximizing the percent of your calories derived from whole plants

Leveraging the simple concept of maximizing the percent of your calories derived from whole plants

Now for the GOOD NEWS! Changing what we eat can be done relatively easily, quickly, and inexpensively. By replacing most of our meat, dairy, egg and fish calories with healthier, plant-based options—we address the leading cause of global warming along with almost every other environmental disaster we face.

We also promote human health worldwide and slash trillions out of the global cost of healthcare. From my “one-pager” referenced below:

As people everywhere begin to learn the whole truth about their food choices, millions will start replacing most, if not all, of their animal-based calories with healthier and “greener,” plant-based alternatives.

GREEN” Economy? What does a truly “green” economy look like? How do eight or nine billion people ever learn to live “comfortably” in harmony with nature on a planet of this size? And how do we figure that out before our civilization collapses?

I’m not sure how we get all that done, but unless we significantly change our food choices in the next ten years, our civilization is probably doomed—as predicted by Stephen Emmott in TEN BILLION. FYI, (when we met in October of 2013) he agreed with my plan, but doesn’t think we’ll be able to execute it soon enough.

But I disagree. All we need is the right leadership. And we need it soon; I explain in my One-Page Recipe for Saving our Ecosystem

A Glimpse into the future—Today in Stamford, CT

Dense living with public transportation will be integral parts of the "green" economy of the future.

Dense living with public transportation will be integral parts of the “green” economy of the future.

This is my home. I took the photo above earlier this month—during one of my sunrise walks around the neighborhood. The outdoor deck of my residence and office is just above the light pole in the photo.

Living on the sixth floor in 724 square feet, I look out over the Stamford skyline and the Fairway Market, shown here. (arguably, the finest supermarket in the world.) There are currently two restaurants in my building and a new Le Pain Quotidien across the street. And my bank, dentist, package store and dry cleaners are just steps away.

My new Harbor Point neighborhood in Stamford, CT. You can see I-95 and the trains from my office.

My new Harbor Point neighborhood in Stamford, CT. You can see I-95 and the trains from my office.

In the newly developed Harbor Point neighborhood of Stamford’s south side, I have a six-minute walk to express trains to Manhattan or Boston. My annual heating bill is less than $50 and my practically new Fiat 500 (parked in the basement) is hardly ever used. Just think about the environmental economies of this way of living.

Since hearing Andres Duany speak in Atlanta in 1999, I have been a big fan of dense, mixed-use, neighborhoods with work, transportation, shopping, dining and entertainment nearby. In that speech, he led off by saying: “Congratulations Atlanta! You have one of the highest standards of living in the world. The problem is that you have a fairly low quality of life.”

My new car is also a 4Leaf-er. A "green" Fiat 500 that gets over 40 mpg.

My “green” Fiat 500 that gets over 40 mpg.

He went on to say that the average Italian office clerk enjoys a richer quality of life than the six-figure executive living in Atlanta.

After all, what good is a 3,000 square foot home in the sprawling suburbs if you have to spend three hours a day commuting and must get into your car to do almost anything? As a man who’s owned multiple homes in the past, I agree with Mr. Duany as I am now enjoying the richest overall quality of life—EVER.

How quickly can the developed world move in this direction? Not soon enough to make much of a difference. We’re going to need many decades to solve our incredibly wasteful, suburban sprawl mess—which is why we must buy some time by urgently changing what we eat NOW.

Sal asks, “What progress, if any, have you made?”

Sal Liggieri is a good friend who’s followed my work for years.

A candid shot of Sal Liggieri, as he ponders the extensive and exceptionally healthy menu at the Candle Cafe

A candid shot of Sal Liggieri, as he ponders the extensive and exceptionally healthy menu at the Candle Cafe

Now in his late eighties, he’s been commenting on my blogs longer than anyone and we have had several lively discussions over lunch in New York. A 25-year vegan himself, he has repeatedly told me that he’s never been able to influence a single individual to make a permanent change in their diet.

Convinced that the human race only has a few more decades to survive, he’s always asking why I am going to the trouble of doing what I do. Yesterday, he posted a comment on my blog—-inspiring me to reply. He wrote:

Hey Jim, how about updating us on what changes you see and what progress, if any, you have made?

From my part of the world, I see more fat and obese people, supermarkets are still bustling, restaurants are still feeding SAD . . . and the people are still lapping it up.

Change, how sweet the sound, but don’t worry America – your time will come – and then you will pay the piper. — Sal Liggieri

My reply. Hi Sal, Always good to hear from you—my good friend who’s probably read more of my blogs than anyone. So what progress have I made, you ask? Without meaning to toot my own horn, here’s my latest Top Ten List:

1. top 10 list 2010-resized-600.jpgSince launching this blog in 2011, I have heard directly from hundreds of people, many of them crediting me for saving their lives. Would you agree that saving just one life would justify the ten thousand hours I have devoted to my work since 2002?

2. Two of my most-viewed blogs are about health coaching: the first about the Institute of Integrative Nutrition and the other about the difficulty of making a living as a health coach. Each has been viewed thousands of times and has probably led many to choose Dr. Campbell’s eCornell course in plant-based nutrition over the IIN two-year health coaching program. What impact will that have? That’s what I call “unknowable” data at this point—but it could only be good, as almost half of the students are MDs or other medical practitioners, earning CME credits.

3. My two visits with James Cameron last year influenced him to launch a global awareness campaign promoting plant-based eating for health AND environmental reasons. My influence may also be seen in a few powerful SUSTAINABILITY messages within the three upcoming Avatar sequels—all of which will be seen by hundreds of millions of people. He also gave out 234 copies of our book to his closest friends and family last December. Who knows what positive impact that may have had?

Dr. Kerry Graff

4. One medical doctor in Canandaigua, NY (Finger Lakes) has printed hundreds of copies of my 4Leaf Survey and has given out over fifty copies of my book. Dr. Kerry Graff says that her use of the content on my website has been a “huge freaking success” with her patients.

5. I got a call yesterday from a medical doctor in Canada who’d found my material and wants to use my 4Leaf content in his transition from “sick-care” to true healthcare in his practice.

6. The eCornell plant-based online course is now using my 4Leaf Survey for ALL of the thousands of people who take that course every year. You can find it at eCornell.com/4Leaf-Survey.

7. Just got an email this morning from someone who wants to advertise on my site. That tells me that my traffic is still growing. It will also enable me to continue making a living in a field of work that doesn’t pay very well.

8. Speaking of earning a living, I currently have four speaking gigs on my schedule during the next two months—the most ever. From a medical practice in New York, to a 22,000-student college in Colorado, to 220 middle-school students in Connecticut—-and finally, to a 10-day immersion retreat (220 people) in the Dominican Republic.

Focused on maximizing the percent of our calories from whole, plant-based foods.

Focused on maximizing the percent of our calories from whole, plant-based foods.

9. I have been instrumental in the launch of The Plantrician Project (plantrician.org), which is hosting the second annual international plant-based healthcare conference (for medical practitioners) in San Diego this week. Much of the content on their site originated in my blogs. This week, their conference is drawing over 400 people from 14 countries.

10. I recently met with THE leading First Amendment attorney in the country regarding an issue that could make a huge difference in the widespread distribution of the real truth about nutrition in this country—and abroad.

What progress, if any? Without my relentless blogging, writing, speaking and activism—none of the above would have happened.

  • Has it been worth my time? ABSOLUTELY!!
  • Has progress been slower that I would have liked? YES!
  • Do I get depressed from time to time? YES
  • Do I plan to stop what I am doing? NEVER!

My six grandchildren. Peyton, Colin, Andrew, Cooper, Violet and Evvy

My six grandchildren. clockwise from Peyton on left: Evvy, Viotet, Andrew, Cooper and Collin

Will my efforts and the efforts of many others be enough to save our civilization? That remains to be seen—and we won’t be around to find out.

But my six grandchildren (and their children) will be. And, regardless what happens, they will all know that their GranBuddy gave it his best shot.

Let’s have lunch in New York soon. Your friend, Jim

PS: What changes do I see? Not nearly enough, but more and more people are talking about the importance of food choices—and we’ll eventually reach a critical mass. Remember, the percent of the population needed to start a revolution is a lot closer to 10% than it is to 50%.
