Naturopathic Doctor added to my MD Help page

Please welcome Connie Sanchez, N.D., to hpjmh.com

Naturopathic logoI can tell you what caught my eye about Dr. Sanchez. It’s the fact that she has experience working with Dr. John McDougall and with all the wonderful people at the True North Health Center in Santa Rosa, CA. She now joins three MDs on our MD Help page—that was added to my blog in December of 2012—and has been very well received.

Many people have written to tell me that this page fills a real need in the world of medicine. That’s because many people who are striving to take charge of their health with a whole foods, plant-based diet will occasionally need the counsel of a medical doctor. They may need guidance when it comes to adjusting/eliminating their medications or they may need help with things like food allergies, digestive issues, cancer screening, autoimmune disorders and a host of other conditions.

Unfortunately, the medical doctors of today didn’t learn much, if anything, about nutrition in medical school and are not aware that up to 80% of our costs of health care are driven by our food choices. Since the majority of doctors still believe that you “need” to eat some animal protein to be healthy, they will not be able to properly counsel you as you make the shift to a whole foods, plant-based diet. But this highly experienced professional can.

Dr. Connie Sanchez, N.D. is a 2001 graduate of the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon. Her expertise is in ‘teaching people how to create and maintain optimal health by living in harmony with the natural world.’  She states “I work with all types of people, from those who are already healthy and are seeking ways to optimize and maintain their health to those suffering from long-term illness, trying to work their way out of the chronic web of dis-ease.”

She has interned with Dr. John McDougall and with the doctors at True North Health Center in Santa Rosa. She is also a spokesperson for PCRM and a former cooking instructor for The Cancer Project. Dr. Sanchez has been a vegetarian/vegan for over 30 years and more recently a strict vegan. She teaches patients that a whole foods vegan diet is not only the best diet for human health but is also essential for the health of all species on this earth and for the planet. Dr. Sanchez devotes much of her spare time as an onshore volunteer for Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and The Marine Mammal Center.

Consecutive daily blogs

Consecutive daily blogs. Image features my place of birth, Memphis, TN on 2-21-45.

In her new book, Vegan Medicine: A Prescription for Health for You and the Planet, to be released July 2013, she addresses this topic.  In addition to specializing in vegan nutrition, lifestyle medicine, fitness, and fasting—she works with people with thyroid disorders, hormone imbalances, autoimmune disease, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

My daily streak will end on February 11 with my 737th consecutive daily blog. But hpjmh.com will definitely not be going dark. My plan is that it will be around for a very long time—hopefully long after I am gone. In the meantime, I will continue blogging, updating and adding pages that will focus on my mission of promoting health, hope and harmony on planet Earth.

About J. Morris Hicks

A former strategic management consultant and senior corporate executive with Ralph Lauren in New York, J. Morris Hicks has always focused on the "big picture" when analyzing any issue. In 2002, after becoming curious about our "optimal diet," he began a study of what we eat from a global perspective ---- discovering many startling issues and opportunities along the way. In addition to an MBA and a BS in Industrial Engineering, he holds a certificate in plant-based nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies, where he has also been a member of the board of directors since 2012. Having concluded that our food choices hold the key to the sustainability of our civilization, he has made this his #1 priority---exploring all avenues for influencing humans everywhere to move back to the natural plant-based diet for our species.

While $500 is a lot of money, I would not categorize Dr. Fuhrman as “all about money.” Two years ago he helped me with a foot issue by setting set up a 15 minute phone consult with my pedorthist in AZ on a very hectic day when he was traveling out of town. It would have been easy to say that he was too busy. I have been walking pain-free ever since and avoided surgery. Well worth the money to me!

  2. J. Morris Hicks says:

Regarding the post from “Glorypup” about the MDs in Dr. Fuhrman’s office now charging $500 for the first visit—suggesting that the plant-based docs have become platinum-based. That’s exactly why I set up this page; all four of the doctors now listed above will schedule an initial phone consultation for around $100. These are not “celebrity docs” like Dr. Furhman, but are just hard-working people like you and me—who want to make a difference doing what they love. Be well, Jim

  3. Bravo! I get excited each time I see a new name added to this list. Soon, doctors will be scrambling to add plant-based nutrition to their CME credits, so they can get onto your list. Thank you for keeping us informed.

  4. Sal Liggieri says:

California appears to have all the plant based doctors. What about New York? Trying to find our kind of doctors is a most difficult task. There is Dr Joel Fuhrman of New Jersey but he became a TV star and now no longer accepts patients.

    • Jean Myers says:

While it’s true that Dr. Fuhrman is not accepting patients himself, he has other physicians working with him who do accept patients.

      • glorypup6509 says:

The last inquiry I made I was told that a Dr Benson has now taken over Fuhrman’s practice. The first visit costs $500 and they don’t accept any insurance.

Plant based doctors? . . . They should call themselves Platinum based doctors.

With Fuhrman, it’s all about money.
